Thiago Santos and Glover Teixeira don’t think they’re completely out of the running for the next light heavyweight title shot just yet.
[autotag]Thiago Santos[/autotag] and [autotag]Glover Teixeira[/autotag] don’t think they’re completely out of the running for the next light heavyweight title shot just yet.
Saturday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 headliner between Santos (21-7 MMA, 13-6 UFC) and Teixeira (31-7 MMA, 14-5 UFC), which takes place at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streams on ESPN+, was thought to be a title eliminator after new champion Jan Blachowicz claimed 205-pound gold last month.
A swerve was delivered just days before the fight, though, when UFC president Dana White announced that middleweight champ [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) would be moving up to challenge Blachowicz (27-8 MMA, 10-5 UFC) in the first quarter of 2021.
Santos, who is coming of a split decision loss to then-champ Jon Jones at UFC 239 in July 2019, admits he was slightly agitated when the news of Adesanya’s title shot first surfaced. However, he’s not going to simply allow himself to be stepped over. Nothing has been officially announced, and Santos said he sees an opportunity to swing the discussion back to his side.

“Honestly when I saw the first time, I felt a little bit frustrated,” Santos told reporters, including MMA Junkie, during Thursday’s UFC on ESPN+ 40 virtual media day. “After I spoke with my manager, we need to understand how things look. I need to do my best. I need to (beat) Glover Teixeira. After that fight, we will see what happens. People speak about Adesanya but still they don’t have contracts. Everything can change. My focus is to do my best this Saturday and make a great victory, then after that we will see.”
Teixeira’s thinking going UFC on ESPN+ 40 aligns tightly with his opponent. He said he’s not trying to overthink the situation but isn’t going into the matchup with the idea a title shot is now out of reach.
“I’m not disappointed yet. It didn’t happen yet,” Teixeira said. “Everything’s possible. We’ll see after this fight. I’ll go in there and make some noise. I never really talk too much (expletive), but I’ll have to to promote this fight and get Adesanya out of there and take over the title fight. That’s what I’ll do. Take him back to 185.”
Robert Whittaker was thrown off guard by UFC president Dana White’s statement that he didn’t want a rematch with Israel Adesanya.
[autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] was thrown off guard by UFC president Dana White’s statement that he didn’t want a rematch with [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag].
Just one week after White said Whittaker (22-5 MMA, 13-3 UFC) vs. Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) was a “very appealing” fight, he changed course and announced the reigning middleweight champ would instead be moving up to light heavyweight for a superfight against titleholder Jan Blachowicz.
According to White, he looked into the champion-vs.-champion fight because of Whittaker’s lack of interest in a rematch with Adesanya.
“I was like, ‘I’m going to have to sit down with this kid (Adesanya) and convince him on why he needs to fight Whittaker,'” White told reporters after UFC on ESPN+ 39 this past weekend. “Whittaker comes out and says he doesn’t want to fight him – craziest (expletive) I’ve ever seen. … I thought Whittaker deserved the shot and Whittaker doesn’t want it, so yeah, we’ll let (Adesanya move up).”
Since Whittaker suffered a second-round TKO loss to Adesanya at UFC 243 in October 2019, he’s rattled off wins over Darren Till and Jared Cannonier. After beating the latter at UFC 254 on Oct. 24, Whittaker said the rematch was a priority, but he wasn’t going to go out of character and trash talk or be boisterous in order to get it.
Whittaker said White seemingly took his comments the wrong way and made it clear he very much wants to share the octagon with Adesanya again – be it at 185 or 205 pounds.
“I certainly think he took a little twist to what I said,” Whittaker told MMA Junkie on Monday. “I never said I don’t want to fight Izzy. That’s not something I said. I did not say that. I’m looking to fight March, April next year. I would like to fight Izzy. If Izzy’s moving up to fight Jan, then I’ll move up and fight him there if he gets the win. I want that fight. I do want that fight. We just had to work it into that timeline.
“I have no control on what the UFC’s going to do or what Izzy’s going to do, but whether he’s here at middleweight or up at light heavyweight, I’ll take the fight him.”
Whittaker, who doesn’t want to fight before March because of the expected arrival of his next child in January, said he was never directly contacted by the UFC about fighting Adesanya again.
He said he wasn’t necessarily shocked by the UFC putting Adesanya vs. Blachowicz together, but his exclusion in the process of getting there is what has thrown Whittaker for a loop.
“They never reached out to me – not once,” Whittaker said. “It wasn’t so much of a twist of Izzy fighting Jan. I can see why they would want to do that, why Izzy would want to do that, why the UFC would want it. I can see that happening. It’s more the twist or how he took my words. Either he misinterpreted it or twisted it a little bit. That one took me for a little bit of a ride. But like I said, my timeline stands. That is the fight that I’ve earned.”
Whittaker clarified he’s not explicitly upset with the UFC or White. He doesn’t think the timeline of how things played out was fair to his position, but Whittaker said he knows what’s done is done.
“With the twist on words a little bit, it was confusing,” Whittaker said. “It was a little annoying, but it is what it is. Can’t change anything now. … It’s not something I can be upset about, because it is what it is. I’m more confused. That would be the biggest emotion I have right now – like, confused. I wish the open dialogue was there, I wish the communication was there because I’m pretty easy to work with. What’s been done has been done. My timeline stands, I’m going to look at fighting Izzy whether it’s at light heavyweight or middleweight, early next year. We’ll have to see how the dice roll.”
[lawrence-related id=563536,563353,561750]
Whittaker was adamant that there are no other fights of interest to him besides Adesanya at this time. He brushed off Paulo Costa’s repeated callouts and said fighting backward in the rankings again isn’t attractive after doing it twice against Till and Cannonier.
Rematching Adesanya is the only option in Whittaker’s mind, and he said he’s willing to let the bout with Blachowicz play out before he gets back in the octagon.
“It depends on what the division is doing or how the UFC is going to approach the division with Izzy moving up,” Whittaker said. “It is hard to say (what’s going to happen). It’s very unclear at the moment the direction the UFC is going to push the division and Izzy. Obviously, Izzy is going to fight Jan, then I guess I’m just going to wait to pounce on either the winner or the loser of that fight because that’s the fight that I’ve earned with my work.”
If Adesanya becomes a double champ, Whittaker said the idea of going up to 205 pounds won’t be a joke. He wants the chance to get his only loss in the past six years back and is convinced it would be a different story than the first meeting.
“I’d certainly have to go into that fight with a different strategy and different gameplan,” Whittaker said. “I cannot go into the same fight with the same attitude and think I will get a different result. I’ve got a good team around me. When I go into that fight with the knowledge of the last fight and how it built up to now, as well as seeing his last few fights, he’s going to be a hard fight. He’s going to be a tough fight. He’s going to come in there very confident – very, very confident. He’s a dangerous fight. But I might have one or two tricks up my sleeve still.”
Israel Adesanya is looking to become a UFC dual champion, and he’s favored to do just that – at least according to oddsmakers.
[autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] is looking to become a UFC dual champion, and he’s favored to do just that – at least according to oddsmakers.
Adesanya, the reigning middleweight champion, could move up to challenge [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag] for the light heavyweight title after UFC president Dana White said this past weekend that the champ-vs.-champ showdown is in the promotion’s plans.
It didn’t take long for oddsmakers to weigh in, with BetOnline.ag opening Adesanya as a -250 favorite and Blachowicz a +210 underdog. The line has increased since, as Adesanya is listed at -300 and Blachowicz at +250.
In plain terms, Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) is a 3-to-1 favorite; a $300 bet would be needed to win $100. On the other side, a $100 bet on Blachowicz (26-8 MMA, 9-5 UFC) would net $250 if he wins.

Adesanya is expected to make the move up since contenders at 185 pounds have run thin. Adesanya figured to defend his title against Jared Cannonier next, but Cannonier lost to Robert Whittaker last month at UFC 254. Whittaker, who’s on a two-fight winning streak, remains the No. 1 contender but lost the title to Adesanya in October 2019.
Blachowicz, who’s on a four-fight winning streak, claimed the 205-pound title vacated by Jon Jones with a second-round TKO of Dominick Reyes in September at UFC 253.
Israel Adesanya has gotten his wish, according to UFC president Dana White.
LAS VEGAS – Dana White was initially hesitant to book [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] against [autotag]Jan Blachowicz[/autotag], but that changed thanks to [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag].
At the UFC on ESPN+ 39 post-fight news conference Saturday, the UFC president said Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC) will move to 205 pounds to fight Blachowicz (26-8 MMA, 9-5 UFC), the light heavyweight champion.
White attributed his willingness to book a fight between two of his champions to the former UFC middleweight champion Whittaker’s recent lack of interest in rematching Adesanya.
“Listen, when the fight was over on ‘Fight Island,’ the last fight (at UFC 254), I was like, ‘I’m going to have to sit down with this kid (Adesanya) and convince him on why he needs to fight Whittaker,'” White said. “Whittaker comes out and says he doesn’t want to fight him – craziest (expletive) I’ve ever seen. Yeah, there’s no arguing with Israel now. I thought Whittaker deserved the shot and Whittaker doesn’t want it, so yeah, we’ll let him do it.”
White did not reveal a timeline or location for the matchup.
Adesanya, 31, knocked out Whittaker to earn the undisputed middleweight title in October 2019. At UFC 248 in March, Adesanya defeated Yoel Romero by unanimous decision. At UFC 253 in September, Adesanya successfully defended his strap for the second time when he finished Paulo Costa with strikes.
Blachowicz, 37, earned the then-vacant light heavyweight championship at UFC 253 when he finished Dominick Reyes with strikes in Round 2. The victory was Blachowicz’s fourth win in as many fights and his third finish in that stretch.
UFC on ESPN+ 39 took place Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas and streamed on ESPN+.
Uriah Hall is of the opinion that Israel Adesnaya is hand-picking opponents he matches up well against.
[autotag]Uriah Hall[/autotag] doesn’t think UFC middleweight champion [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] is fighting the right guys.
Hall (15-7 MMA, 8-9 UFC) believes Adesanya has been picking certain matchups that favor his style. Hall, who fights Anderson Silva this weekend in the UFC on ESPN+ 39 main event, said he sees what Adesanya is doing.
“Adesnaya is picking his fights, man,” Hall told reporters, including MMA Junkie, during UFC on ESPN+ 39 virtual media day. “He sees what I see. He sees holes in all these guys, and he’s already picking (Jared) Cannonier. He’s looking for easy fights. Yeah, I said it.
“So I know why he’s picking certain fights, but I’m dynamic, especially where I’m at right now. I’m laser focused, so it’s a matter of time. I’m just going to play the politics card and whoever the UFC needs me to beat and get to the top.”

Hall is currently on a two-fight winning streak and 3-1 in his past four fights. The 36-year-old currently sits at No. 10 in the official UFC middleweight rankings.
“Prime Time” is excited to share the cage this Saturday against one of the biggest stars in UFC history.
“Yeah, this is one of the biggest fights,” Hall said. “Andeson Silva is a legend. I’m just excited to go out there against a guy I watched growing up. To me, I made it. That’s how I look at it.”

Welcome to “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts. This week, Simon Head hosts the panel of MMA Junkie Radio hosts “Gorgeous” George and “Goze,” as well as MMA Junkie’s Danny Segura. Let’s get after it!

This past Saturday at UFC 254, [autotag]Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] retained the lightweight title with yet another dominant performance, this time submitting [autotag]Justin Gaethje[/autotag] in the second round of their main event. Afterward, Nurmagomedov shocked the masses by announcing his retirement, citing a promise to his mother not to fight anymore now that his father, Abdulmanap, has passed away. This one doesn’t feel like most other MMA retirements, so our question is simple: Will Khabib’s stick?
On the heels of his retirement, everyone’s been talking about Nurmagomedov’s place among all-time great MMA fighters after he leaves with a perfect record of 29-0. One person not down with anyone’s claim of Khabib as the GOAT is Jon Jones. But what do you think? Is Khabib the MMA GOAT, or does he at least have a case?
Nurmagomedov’s retirement means the lightweight championship will be made vacant, which will have some major ramifications in the division, affecting the next bookings of [autotag]Conor McGregor[/autotag], [autotag]Dustin Poirier[/autotag], [autotag]Tony Ferguson[/autotag], [autotag]Michael Chandler[/autotag], Gaethje, and more. What does the UFC do now with the most stacked division in the sport?
Former middleweight champion [autotag]Robert Whittaker[/autotag] won his second straight fight at UFC 254 with an impressive performance against Jared Cannonier, and just like that, “The Reaper” has set himself up for a possible title rematch with [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag]. HOWEVER, Adesanya has options. While a new challenger in Cannonier made all the sense for him to defend his title, Whittaker’s win complicates matters. Perhaps now is the time for Adesanya to move up and either challenge for the light heavyweight title or set up a showdown with rival Jon Jones?
Bellator 250 features one of the biggest fights of the year for the promotion as welterweight champ [autotag]Douglas Lima[/autotag] moves up to fight [autotag]Gegard Mousasi[/autotag] for the vacant middleweight title. Would it be better for business for Bellator to have a champ-champ in Lima or for Mousasi to reclaim the title?
For answers to all of those questions, watch Episode 50 of “Spinning Back Clique” above.
The most highly anticipated fight week in quite some time kicks off with undefeated champion Khabib Nurmagomedov’s arrival in Abu Dhabi.
One of the most highly anticipated fights of 2020 goes down on Saturday night.
UFC 254 takes place Saturday at Flash Forum at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi. The main card airs on pay-per-view following prelims on ESPN2/ESPN+ and early prelims on UFC Fight Pass/ESPN+.
In the main event, UFC lightweight champion[autotag] Khabib Nurmagomedov[/autotag] (28-0 MMA, 12-0 UFC) takes on interim titleholder [autotag]Justin Gaethje[/autotag] (22-2 MMA, 5-2 UFC). Additionally, former Bellator lightweight champion Michael Chandler (21-5 MMA, 0-0 UFC), who recently signed a UFC contract, will be on hand as a standby main-event fighter in case either competitor needs to withdraw from the bout.
The first episode of “Embedded” follows the big-name stars at the top of the card. Here’s the UFC’s description:
UFC 254’s Walt Harris, Lauren Murphy, Justin Gaethje, Sam Alvey, Jared Cannonier and backup Michael Chandler train outdoors. Then everyone (including Buffer) boards the flight to Abu Dhabi. Khabib Nurmagomedov gets an enthusiastic welcome at the hotel.
It’s good to be Israel Adesanya right now, according to UFC president Dana White.
ABU DHABI – It’s good to be [autotag]Israel Adesanya[/autotag] right now, according to UFC president Dana White.
Adesanya (20-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC), the UFC middleweight champion, has morphed into one of the most discussed names in the sport in the aftermath of his title defense against Paulo Costa at UFC 253 in September. “The Last Stylebender” has been locked into a heated feud with rival Jon Jones, teased a move up to fight light heavyweight champ Jan Blachowicz and more.
All of this has raised questions about what’s going to be next for Adesanya. White, however, said he doesn’t have a definitive answer. The superfight talk is intriguing, White said, but he also likes the idea of Adesanya defending his title against the rightful No. 1 contender, which is likely to be the winner of the UFC 254 fight between Robert Whittaker and Jared Cannonier on Oct. 24.
“We’ve got to talk to him,” White told reporters, including MMA Junkie, on Friday after the UFC on ESPN+ 38 faceoffs in Abu Dhabi. “That’s a fight we could definitely make. But I truly think that the winner of Cannonier and Whittaker should get the next shot. He said he would fight Cannonier. He already beat Whittaker. Whittaker, if he wins, makes a lot of sense, too. It’s a great problem to have. The winner of this fight should absolutely get the shot. You could look at the Blachowicz fight and say, ‘Oh, that’s fun, too.’ Jon Jones is fun. He’s got a lot of options.”

There’s been a lot of push for an Adesanya vs. Jones fight from fans after the personal nature of their online exchanges in recent weeks. Adesanya held nothing back on “Bones” in a recent interview with MMA Junkie, but said he’s sticking to his long-determined timeline of July 2021 to make the bout happen.
White said nothing is firm, though.
“It’s never a bad thing when you have a lot of options,” White said. “It would be worse if we were sitting here going, ‘Oh, who’s next?’ What do you do with this guy?'”
