Arch Manning will compete with Quinn Ewers to start at QB for Texas

Steve Sarkisian admitted Ewers has a head start but doesn’t want to hold Manning back.

The Texas Longhorns held their first practice of the year on Monday. After it was over, head coach Steve Sarkisian spoke with the media and confirmed that Freshman quarterback Arch Manning will compete with Quinn Ewers for the right to be the starting quarterback this coming season.

Sarkisian admitted that Ewers has a head start but also said he doesn’t want to hold Manning back, per Paul Myerberg at USA TODAY.

“I’m more focused on is, is each guy focusing on what they need to do to develop to be the best player that they can be? Quinn has an entire year of a head start, but I don’t want to hold Arch back. I want to see how far he can take this thing and what it can look like.”

Manning was the No. 1 overall ranked recruit in the class of 2023. In his Senior season at Isidore Newman (La.), he posted 2,270 passing yards, 34 touchdowns and just two interceptions. While he didn’t do much running in 2022, Manning is still a dual-threat QB who scored 19 total touchdowns as a rusher in his four-year high school career.

As for Ewers, he was also the top recruit in his class (2021) coming out of Southlake Carroll (Texas). After sitting behind C.J. Stroud for a season at Ohio State, he transferred to Texas and started 10 games, totaling 2,177 passing yards, 15 touchdowns and six interceptions.

Arch Manning leads Newman in epic comeback win over Benton 54-52

The Texas Longhorn commit had himself a signature night.

After a quiet first half, Isidore Newman (La.) and top-rated quarterback Arch Manning headed to the locker room down 18 points against Benton (La.), only to rebound in the second act for a thrilling comeback win.

The zero touchdown passes in the first two quarters were a distant memory by the time the third had ended, with the Texas Longhorns commit tossing two of his four on the night to kickstart the shootout.

One of those TDs arguably now stands as Arch’s signature moment in this early part of his senior season—a doubt-erasing rollout strike on fourth and 13 to take the lead.

And if there was ever any question about his mobility, he added this rushing touchdown in the third, too…

Manning ended the night 22-of-38 passing for 317 yards and four touchdowns, leading Newman all the way back for the 54-52 win.

Arch Manning scores rushing touchdown in final preseason tune-up

Manning did show his ability to make plays with his legs by scoring a 34-yard rushing touchdown.

While not everyone agrees he’s the best player in the country, Arch Manning is the biggest name in high school football. Widely considered the No. 1 overall recruit in the country – some have him ranked second – Manning is about to embark on his Senior season.

Before he gets started, Manning’s school —Isidore Newman (La.)—held a preseason game on Friday night, playing one half of football against New Orleans De La Salle (La.).

In Manning’s time on the field, he completed six of 12 pass attempts, totaling 81 yards and an interception, according to 247Sports. While those numbers aren’t anything to write home about, Manning did show his ability to make plays with his legs by scoring a 34-yard rushing touchdown.

Newman officially begins their 2022 season on the road Friday against Hahnville (La.) at 7:00 p.m.

Looking ahead, Manning has committed to playing his college ball at Texas under Steve Sarkisian. On the strength of his commitment (and a few others) the Longhorns are in second place in the 2023 recruiting rankings.

LOOK: Texas target, five-star QB Arch Manning shows off arm during scrimmage

Check out this play from Arch Manning during Isidore Newman’s scrimmage against Holy Cross.

It’s no secret that five-star quarterback Arch Manning is the top overall prospect in the country for the 2023 cycle.

No matter which recruiting network that you glance at, you’ll likely see the No. 1 next to his name. According to 247Sports composite, Manning is one of the top graded prospects in history with a 0.9998 rating.

Manning is also the top priority target for the Texas Longhorns in terms of their 2023 recruiting class. The Isidore Newman product took an unofficial visit to Austin on June 12, where many concluded that Steve Sarkisian and his staff hit it out of the park with the Manning family.

Texas is now considered one of Manning’s top schools, and it appears to be a great fit in terms of what the city and university offers as a whole. It will be tough to hold off programs such as Clemson, Alabama, Georgia, and Ole Miss, but the Longhorns’ move to the SEC could only help Sarkisian’s pitch.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound quarterback is now preparing for this junior season with Isidore Newman High School. Manning participated in Newman’s scrimmage against Holy Cross on August 19, where his athleticism and arm talent was on full display.

In two seasons as the starting quarterback for Newman, Manning threw for 4,360 yards, 55 touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. As a sophomore, his squad finished with a 9-1 record and Louisiana Division III state semifinal berth.

Manning is a generational talent that will send shock waves throughout the country whenever his decision is made. For Texas, his close relationship with Sarkisian and notable track record of developing quarterbacks will be key.
