Browns: Juan Thornhill, Siaki Ika headline list of inactives vs. Bengals

The Browns have announced their five inactives

Gametime is almost here! And as tradition goes, NFL teams release their inactives 90 minutes before the opening kickoff. And for the Cleveland Browns, this means they have announced five players who will not suit up in this game. This list is headlined by starting safety Juan Thornhill, who entered the matchup questionable after dealing with a calf injury all week. Rookie defensive tackle Siaki Ika is also listed as a healthy scratch.

Thornhill, despite an interception returned for a touchdown against his old team in the preseason finale, will have to wait a week to make his regular season debut with the Browns after testing his calf out pregame.

Ika, however, is a bit of a surprise as a third round pick this past April. However, when playing heavy 11-personnel teams that like to throw the football all over the field, Ika does not give much support against the pass. He too will have to wait at least a week to make his NFL debut.

Here is the full list of inactives as the Browns take on the Bengals.

He played fast diagnosing the play in front of him quickly and exploding to the ball to make a play.

Before exiting early with an injury, one he has been cleared of, Ronnie Hickman made another interception as he fights for a roster spot. The Browns also debuted new defensive tackle Shelby Harris as he works to get up to speed.

Podcast: Breaking down the film of rookie defensive end Isaiah McGuire

McGuire has the physical tools to be a solid pass rusher in the NFL.

The Cleveland Browns went into April’s 2023 NFL draft needing to add young talent with upside to the edge position. They did exactly that when they drafted Missouri pass rusher Isaiah McGuire in the fourth round. McGuire has an intriguing skill set mixing in power with average athleticism to provide a balanced pass rusher.

McGuire is a raw prospect that doesn’t have a ton of different pass-rush moves and will need to work on his hand placement as well. But coming to Cleveland where he won’t be expected to do much right away he has the chance to blossom into a solid pass rusher in the NFL. You can watch this podcast by clicking here to see examples on film of McGuire as a prospect.

How does the overall draft class grade out?

The 2023 NFL draft for the Cleveland Browns started later than most, with their first pick being no. 74 overall. Starting with Tennessee wide receiver Cedric Tillman in the third round, the Browns managed to get some talented players that fell into their laps. The players the Browns picked have the physical tools to become quality NFL players and contributors down the road. Some of these players need work on the fundamentals but they have the time as they won’t be thrust into starting roles if they aren’t ready for them.
