Looks like LB Isaiah McDuffie may play a large role in Packers’ defense

With a need at linebacker and limited options available, it’s looking like Isaiah McDuffie could play a rather large role for the Packers.

With few free agent options remaining at linebacker, it’s beginning to look more and more likely that Isaiah McDuffie is going to play a significant role within the Green Bay Packers’ defense this season.

Currently on the roster at the linebacker position for the Packers are McDuffie and Quay Walker, along with Kristian Welch, a special teams contributor, and Christian Young, who was signed to a futures deal in January and is likely a longshot to make the roster.

As far as free agency goes, the top remaining option, according to PFF, is Zach Cunningham, followed by Shaq Leonard–the only linebackers to make PFF’s list of the top 50 available players.

Without question, the Packers are going to address the need in the draft. Not only do they need to find another starting caliber player to put alongside Walker and McDuffie when the defense is lined up in its base 4-3 configuration, but GM Brian Gutekunst would also mention at the NFL Combine that the switch to a 4-3 would require additional depth at linebacker specifically, both to get through the summer and collectively between the 53-man roster and the practice squad.

The good news for the Packers is that they have five selections in the top 100, which will give them the opportunity to address this need. However, this isn’t exactly a deep linebacker draft class either.

Who knows, maybe Gutekunst lands two linebackers early on in the draft, and they both leapfrog McDuffie on the depth chart and start next to Walker in Jeff Hafley’s 4-3 defense. Or maybe after the draft Gutekunst makes a De’Vondre Campbell-like addition who has an immediate impact.

But neither of those things are something that I’m going to bank on at the moment, and neither should the Packers, which puts McDuffie into an elevated role.

With both Campbell and Walker navigating injuries last season, McDuffie saw quite a bit of playing time, totaling 551 defensive snaps. He was a very reliable tackler, making 89 of his 95 attempts. In coverage, he had one pass breakup and allowed 9.2 yards per catch.

McDuffie was at his best against the run, and when the defense was facing obvious passing situations, we would often see Eric Wilson on the field instead.

The most important thing that McDuffie last season provided was stability when the Packers needed it. He wasn’t lights out by any means, but he brought a steady presence to the middle of the Packers’ defense.

In fact, by the playoffs, when both Campbell and Walker were healthy, it was McDuffie who was on the field on first and second downs next to Walker, while Campbell was used more so on third downs.

McDuffie’s most productive season in college, which helped him get drafted by the Packers, came in 2020 during his final season with then first-year Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley.

Hafley mentioned at his introductory press conference that he wants to put Walker in positions to make plays consistently. From the sounds of it, Hafley will want to see how the linebacker room shakes out before absolutely saying which linebacker role Walker will fill.

However, with how the linebacker room is constructed at the moment, Walker would be the weak-side linebacker with McDuffie in the middle. The Mike – or middle – linebacker is the quarterback for the defense and fills a do-it-all role at the position, muddying things up over the middle in coverage and being stout against the run, which means there can be a lot that has to be processed almost instantly.

Obviously, things can still change. The Packers are going to have to continue adding to the linebacker position, likely both through free agency and the draft, and we, of course, have to see how the summer unfolds. But given the current construction of the position group along with the remaining options, it looks like McDuffie is in line for a rather large role this season.

Key matchups for Panthers vs. Packers in Week 16

Many eyes will be on the team’s young QBs, but Sunday’s battle between the Panthers and Packers may be decided out of the backfield.

How can the Carolina Panthers avoid getting squeezed by the big cheese on Sunday?

Here are the key matchups that could help decide Week 16’s clash with the Green Bay Packers:

Packers LB Isaiah McDuffie plays key role in run defense’s success

Isaiah McDuffie has emerged as a valuable linebacker for the Packers.

The Green Bay Packers defense delivered a stellar performance against the Los Angeles Rams with some unsung heroes playing key roles, including linebacker Isaiah McDuffie, who was filling in for an injured Quay Walker.

“There was just a lot of splash plays,” said Matt LaFleur postgame. “Isaiah McDuffie, I felt like he was all over the place, and our guys were making plays. They were having fun, and they were competing, and that’s really all you can ask for is guys trusting what you see in front of you and going out and playing fast, playing physical and playing together and doing your job.”

Including quarterback scrambles, the Packers run defense held the Rams to just 2.6 yards per carry, with a long of just eight yards. McDuffie was a key part of that performance, filling running lanes and flowing sideline-to-sideline to stop the ball carriers from getting outside and turning upfield.

McDuffie finished the game with six total tackles against the run—the next highest mark on the team were several players with two. McDuffie’s four run-stops – or plays that constitute a “loss” for the offense, according to PFF – were also the most on the team. Of McDuffie’s six tackles, his average depth of each tackle was just 0.4 yards, or basically right at the line of scrimmage.

“It was good,” said McDuffie about the Packers run defense. “It starts up front and those guys definitely firing off the ball, making it clean for the linebackers. It was great.”

A few of these stops from McDuffie also came in crucial situations. On a third-and-two in the third quarter with the Rams in Packers’ territory, and the game still close at 7-3, McDuffie came up with a tackle for loss. The Rams then missed their field goal attempt. On the drive prior to that one, the Rams were again in Packers territory, but McDuffie came up with another tackle for loss, putting Los Angeles in a second-and-15 situation that they were unable to recover from and eventually punted.

”You just have to have the mentality next man up, honestly,” said McDuffie on Monday. “Really the approach you have to take is always focus on your job and if something happens, be ready. If you’re ready, you don’t have to get ready.”

Due to De’Vondre Campbell missing a few games earlier in the season with an injury, McDuffie had three starts prior to the Los Angeles game and has played 257 total snaps this season. While Sunday’s performance was his best of the season, he has been able to provide some stability at the linebacker position while it has dealt with injuries.

McDuffie has been a very reliable tackler, making 45 of his 47 tackle attempts this season, which has not only helped this defense in the run game, but also he’s limited yards after the catch opportunities for pass-catchers, allowing just 8.4 yards per catch. For what it’s worth, McDuffie has the 14th highest tackling grade from PFF out of 88 eligible linebackers.

“Another year of experience,” said McDuffie of his play this season. “Again, it just starts up front, and they played very well yesterday, and it helped me play good.”

Walker was a late addition to the Packers injury report last week, missing Friday’s practice with a groin injury. As this week progresses, we will get a better idea of what his availability versus Pittsburgh on Sunday will be.

Packers LB Isaiah McDuffie shines vs. run during first NFL start

Isaiah McDuffie’s 15 snaps against the Lions showed a fast and aggressive defender against the run.

The first NFL start of Green Bay Packers linebacker Isaiah McDuffie featured 15 encouraging snaps, especially against the run.

The Packers’ second-year linebacker played in the base defense next to Quay Walker – filling in for the injured De’Vondre Campbell – and looked quite comfortable taking on blocks, filling gaps and taking down the ball-carrier.

Pro Football Focus charted McDuffie with 10 run-defense snaps. He made three tackles, and all three were considered to be “stops,” or tackles constituting a defeat for the offense.

Here are all three:

This is a smooth, clean rep. McDuffie beats the block attempt of the right guard at the second level, using his hands to shed the block, and then stuffs former Packers running back Jamaal Williams with a perfect form tackle after a 1-yard gain. Good discipline and tracking here. McDuffie came off the block to stay in his run fit and made the play in the open field. If he doesn’t make this tackle, Williams would have been one-on-one with Darnell Savage at the second level. That probably ends only one way.

Here, McDuffie stays disciplined in his run fit, works off a block by the tight end and stuffs Williams again after a short gain. Kenny Clark’s penetration helped slow the runner, but McDuffie was in the right place and was physical at the point of attack.

McDuffie showed his impressive athleticism on this one. Look at the quick recognition and explosive lateral agility. He diagnosed the stretch run immediately, got downhill in a few steps, slipped past the blocker (who was too late coming off the combo block because of McDuffie’s quickness) and once again made another terrific stop after just one yard. This is great stuff. If McDuffie had been late getting to his spot, Williams would have had a big hole to get into the second level and likely would have ripped of an explosive gain.

Overall, Williams gained a grand total of four yards on these three runs, largely because McDuffie made the right play each time.

Among linebackers with at least 10 run defense snaps in Week 9, McDuffie led all players in run stop percentage, per PFF.

McDuffie also rushed the quarterback twice (without a pressure) and was on the field for three coverage snaps (without allowing a completion). He made an impact on special teams as well, creating a tackle on a kickoff return in the first half.

The Packers will eventually get back De’Vondre Campbell at some point, and Krys Barnes is clearly still a big part of the defense’s plans at linebacker, but McDuffie showed he belongs in Detroit. He also handled his business against the run in Buffalo during the second half the week before.

Considering all the Packers’ struggles against the run this season, it might make some sense to use McDuffie more down the stretch.

Packers LB Isaiah McDuffie flies around, ends two drives and makes an insane tackle vs. Saints

Packers LB Isaiah McDuffie had an eventful (but positive) night against the Saints at Lambeau Field.

Green Bay Packers linebacker Isaiah McDuffie might be one of the most improved players on Matt LaFleur’s roster to start the 2022 season, and he was one of the standouts on defense during Friday night’s preseason win over the New Orleans Saints.

The second-year linebacker flew around the field, made impact plays to end drives and even created a two-for-one tackle highlight.

In the first half alone, McDuffie made a stop of Saints quarterback Ian Book on 3rd-and-12 to force a punt and then took down rookie Chris Olave after a short gain on 3rd-and-16 to force a field goal attempt. His speed sideline-to-sideline continues to look like a real asset.

LaFleur, without the benefit of a second viewing of the tape, said he thought McDuffie was flying around the field and making plays.

McDuffie, a sixth-round pick last year, finished with six tackles in the first half.

McDuffie also got credit for this wild sequence in which he went through Saints center Cesar Ruiz (a 2020 first-round pick) to take down running back Toby Jones Jr. at the end of a run in the first half:

After two preseason games, two things are clear: McDuffie is a rock-solid lock for the 53-man roster, and he looks like a capable (and fast) backup linebacker who should be a vital part of the special teams effort for the Packers in 2022.

Watch: Saints OL Cesar Ruiz tackles his own running back

Packers LB Isaiah McDuffie couldn’t tackle Saints running back Tony Jones Jr. without New Orleans OL Cesar Ruiz’s help.

There are times as a defender when you really want to tackle an opposing running back, but things just don’t work out the way you would prefer. This happened to the Green Bay Packers’ defense on Friday night against the New Orleans Saints. Running back Tony Jones Jr. (No. 34) was rumbling down the left side of the field, and there were several Packers defenders who had a serious problem bringing Jones down.

Leave it to Green Bay linebacker Isaiah McDuffie to get it done by any means necessary. McDuffie (No. 58) was out of position to make the tackle, as interior offensive lineman Cesar Ruiz (No. 51) was in McDuffie’s way.

So, as our own Laurie Fitzpatrick points out, McDuffie came up with the veteran move of pushing Ruiz into Jones, and that’s a tackle no matter what you think.

We’re not sure how to score that. Does Ruiz get an assist along with McDuffie? And what will film day be like in the Saints’ facility. Ruiz is a very good player, so we’re guessing the static he gets for this will be good-natured.

Packers also getting back DL Kingsley Keke, LB Isaiah McDuffie from NFI list

Like CB Kevin King, DL Kingsley Keke and LB Isaiah McDuffie are both coming off the non-football injury list for the Packers on Thursday.

Cornerback Kevin King isn’t the only player making his training camp debut for the Green Bay Packers on Thursday.

Like King, defensive lineman Kingsley Keke and rookie linebacker Isaiah McDuffie both came off the non-football injury list and are practicing with the team on Thursday, per Mike Spofford of the team’s official site.

Keke was dealing with an ankle injury, while McDuffie had a hamstring injury. Both were placed on the NFI list to start training camp.

Keke is entering his third NFL season as an expected starter at defensive end. He produced four sacks and 22 total pressures last season and is expected to take another step in 2021. With more development, Keke could be a vital part of the Packers’ base defense and interior pass-rushing packages.

McDuffie, a sixth-round pick from Boston College, needs to make up for lost time as he competes to win a roster spot as a backup linebacker and special teams contributor.

The Packers are getting healthy to start the preseason. King, Keke and McDuffie are off the NFI list, and both Kamal Martin and Chris Blair returned to practice on Thursday.

Outside linebacker Za’Darius Smith and safety Will Redmond are the only two players left on the NFI list. Left tackle David Bakhtiari is the lone player left on the PUP list.

Packers place rookie LB Isaiah McDuffie on NFI list to start training camp

The Packers put rookie Isaiah McDuffie, a sixth-round pick, on the non-football injury list to start training camp.

One of the Green Bay Packers’ draft picks won’t be available to start training camp.

The team placed rookie linebacker Isaiah McDuffie on the non-football injury list on Friday, according to the league’s transaction report.

Rookies reported to camp for the Packers on Friday.

It’s unclear when McDuffie, a sixth-round pick, was injured, or the severity of the new injury. He was able to participate during the team’s offseason workout program.

The non-football injury designation is used when an injury is sustained outside of a practice or game. McDuffie is eligible to come off the list at any time. He would be eligible to start the season on the non-football injury list if he’s not recovered by the regular season.

Rams show interest in Boston College LB Isaiah McDuffie with multiple pre-draft meetings

The Rams could consider Isaiah McDuffie late on Day 3 if they’re still in need of linebacker help.

Inside linebacker sure looks like a major need for the Los Angeles Rams in the 2021 NFL draft, but Les Snead and the front office may not prioritize it the way many fans hope they will. Their pre-draft meetings haven’t included many linebackers, and the ones they have met with are mostly expected to be Day 3 picks.

Boston College linebacker Isaiah McDuffie has met with the Rams multiple times, according to Justin Melo of The Draft Network, and he could be an option late in the draft if the team doesn’t select a linebacker early in the second or third round.

McDuffie is slightly undersized as a linebacker, standing 6-foot-1 and 227 pounds. He was productive when healthy, however, recording 230 tackle, 8.5 sacks and 15.5 tackles for a loss in 31 career games.

He did miss most of the 2019 season due to an injury suffered in the spring game, however, playing just four games all year. In 2020, he earned second-team All-ACC honors with 107 tackles and an interception in 11 games.

McDuffie has limitations in coverage and struggles to take on blockers at times because of his smaller stature, but he plays extremely hard and has decent speed. The Rams shouldn’t draft him with the expectation that he’ll be an immediate starter, but he’d be a good depth piece to join the linebacker competition.

Report: Boston College LB Isaiah McDuffie has met virtually with the Vikings

Do you want the Minnesota Vikings to draft Boston College LB Isaiah McDuffie in 2021?

The Vikings have a plethora of needs across their defense, many of which have been filled this offseason.

But one thing Minnesota could continue to address is the depth at linebacker. The Vikings were forced to utilize a depleted linebacker unit throughout 2020. In 2021, the team is likely to be without free agent LB Eric Wilson.

The Vikings have already agreed to terms with former Chargers LB Nick Vigil, but they could always add depth through the draft. If the team opts to do that, Boston College LB Isaiah McDuffie could be an option — either in the draft or in free agency afterwards.

According to The Draft Network’s Justin Melo, the Vikings have met virtually with McDuffie. In his final collegiate season with Boston College, McDuffie tallied 54 solo tackles, 6.5 tackles for loss, three sacks and an interception. He did not have a pass breakup.

McDuffie would not be a starter on the Vikings defense, but he could compete for the fourth linebacker spot. As it stands, Eric Kendricks and Anthony Barr would be the two mainstay linebackers. Players like Vigil, Ryan Connelly, Troy Dye, Cameron Smith and likely others will compete for the third linebacker position.
