Despite Hogs’ lackluster season, national exposure helps recruiting

Coach Musselman says basketball recruiting still going strong, despite subpar season on the court.

Although the season has not gone as planned, Arkansas basketball coach Eric Musselman said the vibes of recruiting are still strong, particularly after ESPN GameDay hosted their popular weekly show from the confines of Bud Walton Arena on Saturday.

Although the Razorbacks (10-10, 1-6 SEC) lost for the sixth time in seven SEC games, with a 63-57 defeat at the hands of No. 6 Kentucky later in the day, Musselman said the recruits on hand Saturday were thrilled with the experience of the pre-game show, as well as the raucous environment during the game.

“We can’t comment on any particular recruits, so what I can say is that we have two recruits that are going to come to campus pretty soon,” he said during his weekly radio show, Eric Musselman Live, Monday night at Sassy’s Bar & Grille. “They were extremely excited, and their families were excited.”

Of course, he was referring to Arkansas signees Isaiah Elohim and Jalen Shelley, who were both nominated last week for the 2024 McDonald’s All-American Game. They were two of 44 nominees, nationally, who were vying for 24 spots to play in the April 2 game at Houston’s Toyota Center.

Elohim, a 6-foot-5 wing from Northridge (Calif.) Sierra Canyon, is the No. 41 ranked player in the class of ’24. He signed with Arkansas on Nov. 8, after choosing the Hogs over Kansas, Villanova, Kentucky, Duke and Arizona, among others.

He was was rated a 5-star recruit going into his junior season  – the No. 2 overall prospect and the No. 2 small forward – before a knee injury limited his playing time last season.

Shelley, a 6-foot-8 forward who plays up the road at Link Academy in Branson, Mo., is the No. 53 player, nationally, and projects as a stretch-4 or small forward. He also signed with the Hogs over Louisville, on Nov. 8, the first day of the national signing period.

There are also a handful of other prime recruits the Razorbacks are targeting, who also liked what they saw this past weekend.

“Just the general feedback of guys that are out there in the recruiting landscape, it was super, super positive,” Musselman said. “I can always kind of gauge the interest level or the exposure, based on how many text messages I get. Whether it’s after a game or whatever, and I can tell you that before noon on Saturday it was like we had won a big game, even before we played the game.

After three straight trips to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, which includes a pair of Elite 8 appearances, the fifth-year head coach has created quite a buzz for the program since arriving in 2019. Despite this lackluster season, the future still looks bright.

“That was based on the national exposure and how many people sent texts – people that I hadn’t heard from in years, were texting, at that time of day,” Musselman said. “A lot of people watched it. I think there were nothing but positives as you look into the future of what it can do for recruiting and stuff like that.”

After a stronger showing against the Wildcats, which included a lead at halftime, the Hogs are hoping to finally get off the schneid when they visit Missouri on Wednesday night. That game will tipoff at 7:30 on the SEC Network.

Sierra Canyon comes back from 17-point deficit to beat Notre Dame

Sierra Canyon’s full-court press and fourth-quarter offense from Bryce Cofield and Isaiah Elohim sparked a massive comeback over Notre Dame.

A battle of a pair of 2023-24 California high school basketball titans in front of an audience with celebrities lived up to its billing with a 17-point comeback by No. 20 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) to hand No. 19 Notre Dame (Sherman Oaks, Calif.) its first loss of the season 81-75.

The Notre Dame Knights, who entered the game with a 24-0 record, took a commanding 66-49 lead into the fourth quarter. Sierra Canyon launched a full-court press that turned defensive into offense, primarily from three-star forwards Bryce Cofield and Isaiah Elohim.

The Trailblazers forced 10 turnovers over the final six minutes of the game, according to the Los Angeles Daily News, as they chipped away at the lead. Cofield and Elohim combined for 21 points in the quarter, and Cofield gave Sierra Canyon the lead with a little over a minute left in the game.

Cofield finished with 14 points and Elohim with 18, per the Los Angeles Times. Justin Pippen, a three-star guard on the 247Sports Composite, led the team with 19 points.

For Notre Dame, four-star guard Mercy Miller led with 28 points. Lino Mark, ranked four-stars on the 247Sports Composite, scored 21.

Notre Dame and Sierra Canyon were battling for supremacy of the Mission League after both took down Harvard-Westlake, previously a top-5 team in the nation, a week earlier. In the stands included former Sierra Canyon player Bronny James, Justin’s dad Scottie Pippen, and Los Angeles Dodgers star Mookie Betts.

With the win, Sierra Canyon improved its record to 24-1 and pushed Notre Dame to an identical record. With 19 wins in a row, the Trailblazers enter the Mission League Tournament as the top seed, one spot ahead of Notre Dame. Both play their next respective games on Wednesday.

Arkansas hoops’ two freshmen next year looking toward McDonald’s All-American honors

Jalen Shelley and Isaiah Elohim may be McDonald’s All-Americans by the time they get to campus next year.

The Arkansas basketball team needs help.

If that help is to come via personnel, the Razorbacks could do a lot worse than Jalen Shelley and Isaiah Elohim.

The two signees in Arkansas’ recruiting Class of 2024 were nominated as McDonald’s All-Americans on Wednesday. They are two of 44 nominees nationally from which 24 will be selected.

Elohim, a 6-foot-5 wing from California, is the 41st-ranked player in the class.  He picked Arkansas over Kansas, Villanova, Kentucky, Duke and Arizona among others.

Shelley, who plays just up the road at Link Academy, is a bit bigger at 6-foot-8, but projects as a stretch-4 or small forward. He is the 53rd-ranked player in nation.

The Razorbacks had three McDonald’s All-Americans in last year’s class: guard Anthony Black, guard Nick Smith Jr. and wing Jordan Wing. All three went to the NBA after one season.

Future Arkansas Razorback and current four-star prospect in the 2024 recruiting class, [autotag]Isaiah Elohim[/autotag], was named to a prestigious award watch list on Friday afternoon.

The Naismith High School Basketball Player of the Year Trophy is given out each year to the best male and female high school basketball player in the country. On Friday, they released their 2023-24 watch list, comprised of 50 high school players across the country.

As mentioned previously, Arkansas commit Isaiah Elohim was included on the list. The senior from Northridge, California is entering his final season with Sierra Canyon High School before he heads to Fayetteville to play for [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] next year.

According to both Rivals.com and 247Sports.com, Elohim is a four-star prospect and the 10th-ranked forward in the state of California. Nationally, Rivals has him ranked No. 34 and 247Sports has him ranked No. 41.

Arkansas basketball lands commitment from Top 40 prospect

Arkansas basketball has landed their second commitment of the 2024 recruiting class, and it’s a big get for Eric Musselman.

[autotag]Arkansas basketball[/autotag] has landed their second commitment of the 2024 recruiting class.

[autotag]Isaiah Elohim[/autotag], a consensus top 40 four-star recruit, committed to the Hogs on Thursday morning. The 6-5, 190-pound wing chose Arkansas over Kansas and Villanova.

Elohim is from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California and early on in the recruiting process was considered a top five prospect in the country. Injury issues caused him to fall in recent rankings, but he’s an extremely talented player and priority target for Arkansas basketball.

He has the frame and athleticism that typically translate really well from high school to college, and that [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] has loved to target at Arkansas. Elohim is very aggressive when going downhill to the basket and has above average finishing ability. He will need to continue to work on his jumpshot and ball handling, but he’s shown flashes of being able to get to his spots on the floor and knock down tough shots.

Elohim is the second commitment for the Razorbacks in the 2024 recruiting class. He joins consensus four-star forward [autotag]Jalen Shelley[/autotag] as the other commit for next year.

Arkansas basketball: Top 40 prospect in 2024 class has Hogs in final three

Arkansas basketball has made the final three for another Top 40 prospect in the 2024 recruiting class.

One of [autotag]Arkansas basketball[/autotag]’s top targets in the 2024 recruiting class just announced the Razorbacks in his final three schools.

[autotag]Isaiah Elohim[/autotag], a consensus four-star recruit, announced on Monday afternoon via Twitter (X) that his recruitment was down to Arkansas, Kansas and Villanova. He’s expected to make a decision in the next week or so.

Elohim is a 6-5, 190-pound wing from Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California. Early on in the recruiting process, Elohim was considered a top five prospect in the country but injury issues caused him to fall in recent rankings. Still, he’s an extremely talented player and priority target for Arkansas basketball.

Elohim has the frame, wingspan and athleticism that should translate immediately to the college level. He’s super aggressive and decisive when getting to the basket. His handle and jumpshot need polishing, but he’s shown flashes of being able to get to his spots and knock down shots.

If [autotag]Eric Musselman[/autotag] is able to land Elohim, it would be the second commitment of the 2024 recruiting class. Consensus four-star forward Jalen Shelley committed to the Hogs a little over two weeks ago, and was the first commit for this class.

Alabama MBB offers 2024 5-star SG Isaiah Elohim

Alabama’s coaching staff recently extended an offer to 2024 five-star shooting guard Isaiah Elohim

Alabama’s coaching staff extended their most recent offer on Tuesday to 2024 shooting guard Isaiah Elohim.

Elohim is originally from Kingston, New York but plays for Sierra Canyon High School in Chatsworth, California. He is a high school teammate to LeBron James’ son, Bronny James.

With Alabama having a lot of success while in-season, it could help the coaching staff pursue some of the more elite prospects across the country. Elohim has some time to make a decision. It will be interesting to see where he visits before committing.

Roll Tide Wire breaks down Isaiah Elohim’s recruiting profile.

High School Basketball Recap: Bronny James’ team beats Kiyan Anthony’s, 62-51

Here’s how the two young players performed and who else stood out.

On Monday night, the sons of two NBA legends met on the court, with Bronny James and the Sierra Canyon (Calif.) taking on Kiyan Anthony and Christ the King (NY.). For a high school basketball game, it drew some real Hollywood star power. Broadcast on ESPN2, the game naturally drew stars like LeBron James and Scottie Pippen, but Kim Kardashian was also spotted in the crowd.

In the end, the Bronny’s Trailblazers beat Kiyan’s Royals, 62-51. Here’s how the two young players performed and who else stood out.

Bronny James:

Bronny’s biggest highlight of the game was in the first quarter on a breakaway steal and dunk, which brought on a lofty LeBron comparison:

This lefty windmill layup late in the third quarter may have been his most impressive play, though.

Later on, Bronny threw down an alley-oop to ignite the crowd. While Bronny does not look like a natural shooter at this time, he is already a potent finisher on the break and a sharp facilitator.

In the end, James finished with a line of 12 points, six rebounds and three assists.

Other Sierra Canyon standouts:

Justin Pippen (Scottie’s son) flashed some sharp ball-handling and shooting chops. However, shooting guard Isaiah Elohim looked like the best player on the floor as he scored a team-high 17 points. That befits his status as a five-star recruit and the No. 1 prospect in California in the class of 2024. He already has 11 college offers.

Kiyan Anthony:

Anthony didn’t get as much attention compared to Bronny. On the bright side, he’s a much better shooter. His first basket was a catch-and-shoot three from the corner early in the second quarter. His jumper has a quick release and excellent form with tons of range, not unlike Melo’s.

He has a spooky-high ceiling from deep.

Anthony finished with eight points, two boards and two assists.

Other Christ the King standouts:

Power forward Qin Pang was superb in the first half. He impressed with his power on cuts and screens; he moved well without the ball and demonstrated a surprisingly soft touch for his size (6-foot-9, 230 pounds). A tough spin robbed him of a three just before halftime. Pang has 11 offers, including Michigan, Oregon and UCLA.

Sierra Canyon is now 7-1 this year. Their next matchup will be visiting LeBron’s alma mater St. Vincent-St. Mary (Ohio) on Saturday. Meanwhile, Christ the King is 2-2 and hosts St. Francis Prep (NY) on Tuesday, Dec. 20.
