The brief Kansas City Chiefs tenure for Isaiah Buggs appears to have ended without suiting up for the team in a game. The 27-year-old defensive lineman is expected to be released, according to NFL Network insider Tom Pelissero.

“The Chiefs have informed DL Isaiah Buggs they’re releasing him, per source,” Pelissero posted to his X account early Monday morning. The reported release follows two arrests of the former Alabama standout over the past few weeks in his hometown. Tuscaloosa Patch reported that Buggs was recently charged with burglary on June 16th after dealing with an arrest for animal cruelty last month.

The former sixth-round pick in the 2019 NFL Draft played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the last two with the Detroit Lions before signing with the Chiefs as a practice squad player in January. He never played a down for Kansas City but signed a futures contract in February, hoping to make the team in training camp.

The Chiefs’ offseason is quickly ending, with training camp only weeks away as they will try to eliminate any more distractions on their journey to a potential three-peat.

The unfortunate news continues to pour in this offseason for the Kansas City Chiefs as off-the-field issues make headlines for another weekend. Defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs has yet to play in a game for the Chiefs, but he’s already been busy in the news.

According to reporter Ryan Phillips of the Tuscaloosa Patch, the 27-year-old was charged with burglary on Sunday.

“Tuscaloosa County Jail records show former Tide defensive lineman and Kansas City Chief Isaiah Buggs was arrested for burglary on Sunday,” said Phillips in a post on his X account.

According to Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office records, Buggs was released on $5,000 bond.

Buggs is already facing legal issues, having been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty last month. Animal control officers reportedly found a gray and white pit bull and a black Rottweiler on a screened-in back porch without food or access to water.

The former Alabama Crimson Tide standout hopes to stick with Kansas City after stops with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions. Buggs remains listed on the Chiefs’ 90-man roster after signing a futures deal in February.

As the Kansas City Chiefs continue with another week of organized team activities, more off-the-field drama is clouding their training. The latest revolves around defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs, who has been charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty in Alabama.

The Tuscaloosa Police Department received a report that two dogs were left on the back porch of a home being rented by Buggs. Officers and animal control reportedly found a gray and white pit bull and a black Rottweiler on a screened-in back porch without food or water access.

Buggs turned himself in on Thursday and was formally charged and released on bond.

“Under no circumstance does Mr. Buggs condone the mistreatment of any animal,” Buggs’ agent, Trey Robinson, said in a statement to ESPN. “The dogs at issue did not belong to him, and he was unaware they remained at the property in question.”

Buggs played three seasons with the Pittsburgh Steelers and the last two with the Detroit Lions before signing with the Chiefs in January as a practice squad player. He has never played a down for Kansas City but signed a futures contract in February.

Former Detroit Lions defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs is facing charges of animal cruelty for his handling of dogs on his Alabama property. Buggs, who played collegiately at Alabama, was arrested in Tuscaloosa after emaciated, starving and neglected dogs were found at his address.

From the report by Ryan Phillips of the Tuscaloosa Patch,

The petition goes on to say that when TPD and the City of Tuscaloosa’s Animal Control officers arrived, they found a grey and white pitbull on the screened-in back porch surrounded in feces, with no access to food or water.

What’s more, those responding reported finding a black Rottweiler mix locked in a metal cage in direct sunlight with no access to food or water.

Buggs was a full-time starter in the 2022 season for Detroit and played reasonably well in his first season with the Lions. However, his star faded in 2023 and Buggs was benched and then waived before the end of the season. There were low-level grumblings about his lack of playing time and position on the depth chart that contributed to his fall from grace in Detroit.

His current team, the Kansas City Chiefs, has yet to comment or act publicly on Buggs’ arrest.

Kansas City Chiefs sign former Alabama defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs to a futures contract

Former Alabama defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs has signed a futures contract with the Kansas City Chiefs. Buggs joined the Chiefs practice squad toward the end of the regular season.

Former Alabama defensive tackle Isaiah Buggs was a member of the Super Bowl-winning Kansas City Chiefs this past season. The Mississippi native will remain with the Chiefs organization for the forseeable future after signing a futures contract with the team on Tuesday.

A futures contract is a contract that secures an NFL player to a team for the future. That player is not under contract until the start of the following league season, however.

For Buggs, this is a good opportunity for him to catapult his career. The former JUCO standout has spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers and Detroit Lions over the course of his NFL career.

In five seasons, Buggs has recorded 89 tackles, four tackles for loss, and two sacks. In 56 games played, Buggs has made 23 starts.

It will be interesting to watch and see how Buggs’ professional career ensues in Kansas City. This seems like a good opportunity for him at this stage in his career.

At least one former Alabama player will win a Super Bowl ring, but there’s a twist

The Chiefs and the 49ers will face off in the Super Bowl, which means it’s a guarantee that one Alabama player will be on the winning team… but there’s an interesting twist.

Alabama is the leader among all colleges with active players in the NFL. For that reason, it’s not a surprise to hear that both teams participating in Super Bowl LVIII have former Crimson Tide players within their organization.

The Kansas City Chiefs and the San Francisco 49ers will square off for the title, which means one Alabama alum is guaranteed a Super Bowl ring. However, it comes with an interesting twist.

The two former Tide players who could win a ring are defensive lineman Isaiah Buggs of the Chiefs and tight end Cameron Latu of the 49ers.

The previously mentioned twist is that neither of them will be playing in the game.

Buggs is on the Chiefs’ practice squad and Latu suffered a leg injury in late August and was placed on the injured reserve.

Technically speaking, there won’t be any former Alabama players playing in the Super Bowl, but one will get a ring.
