Michigan basketball guard selects transfer destination

Best of luck to him.

His Michigan career didn’t go as planned for former four-star guard Isaiah Barnes.

After arriving as part of the 2021 class, the shooting guard played in 17  games (two in 2021-22 and 15 in 2022-23). Unlike some of his peers, he never became even a rotation piece. Thus, Barnes decided to look for greener pastures elsewhere.

After averaging 1.1 points in 6.1 minutes per game with Michigan, Barnes opted not to stay in the Power Five. According to his Instagram, Barnes has committed to transfer to Tulsa, where he’ll have three years of eligibility with the Golden Hurricane.

Barnes is one of many departures from this past season’s Michigan basketball team. Jett Howard and Kobe Bufkin are departing for the NBA draft. Barnes and star center Hunter Dickinson are leaving via the NCAA transfer portal.

Michigan basketball player to enter NCAA transfer portal

Bummer it didn’t work out.

Michigan basketball ended its 2022-23 season on a whimper, losing to Vanderbilt in stunning fashion in the second round of the NIT. It appears the Wolverines are about to lose another battle in a way.

In his second year with the program, shooting guard Isaiah Barnes, a former four-star recruit, didn’t see much time on the court. This was supposed to be a season in which he could be in the rotation, but he didn’t participate outside of early in the season.

According to On3’s Joe Tipton, Barnes intends to enter the NCAA transfer portal.

Barnes was the No. 117 recruit in the 2021 class per the 247Sports composite. He appeared in 15 games in 2022-23 and just two in 2021-22. He averaged 1.1 points per game this past season. He will have three years of eligibility at his next school of choice.

It begins.

While the 2020 class didn’t end up as Juwan Howard & Co. would have liked, given the loss of one commit and another prospect that looked to be a Michigan lean, the Wolverines have started their 2021 class in earnest on Wednesday.

Hailing from Oak Park (IL) River Forest, Isaiah Barnes is a four-star shooting guard/small forward with offers from Kansas, Illinois and Wisconsin among others. He’s rated as the No. 85 player in the country according to 247Sports’ proprietary rankings, the 20th best small forward and No. 5 player in the state of Illinois.

And he committed to wear the maize and blue at the next level.

Barnes is Michigan’s first commitment of the 2021 recruiting cycle.
