Former Republican Governor Chris Christie fought hard for sports betting to become legalized, but he and the state lost in a lower court system originally. However, they lobbied for the case to be heard by the Supreme Court, which ruled in their favor in mid-May of 2018. Democrat Governor Phil Murphy made the first legal bet at a sportsbook June 14, 2018. State law A4111 allows all residents of the Garden State over 21 years of age to wager at licensed sportsbooks at all casinos and racetracks, as well as online.
However, bets are not accepted for any colleges in the state. This includes Rutgers and Seton Hall, as well as many other smaller schools. Wagering on any collegiate event inside the state’s borders are also prohibited. There are no restrictions betting on professional sports franchises like the NFL’s New York Giants and New York Jets, and the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, however.
