Why Iowa Will Win

Start running, keep running, and then run some more.

It took a few games to get everything up to speed, but even though it ran for 195 yards and two scores and averaged well over five yards per carry against Purdue, everything really kicked in against Michigan State.

The Hawkeyes went with what they do, got a huge day out of the offensive line, and they rocked the Spartans for 226 yards and four scores, controlling the game throughout.

Minnesota’s run defense hasn’t been powered on as much as it’s been run through against Michigan and Maryland, and gave up 181 yards to a relatively punchless Illinois.

Why Minnesota Will Win

Iowa is getting yards out of Spencer Petras and the passing attack, but he’s not accurate enough – hitting only 54% with three interceptions and just two touchdown passes – and it’s been a killer to keep things moving.

The Hawkeye offense was a rock over the last two seasons on third downs – early rolling for over 40% conversion rates on a regular basis – and this year, Petras and the offense aren’t clicking to keep things moving only converting 33% of the time.

On the flip side, for all of the problems Minnesota has had, the team is moving the chains and it’s dominating the time of possession battle.

Overall the offense is working. It just needs its defense to hold up.

CFN College Football Experts Picks

What’s Going To Happen

Both teams were able to finally get their respective seasons going last week with dominant wins, but which one was more real? Minnesota’s offense has been fine throughout the season, but it needs the defense to stiffen against a decent offense.

It’ll happen this week.

The Gopher run D had a slew of issues against Michigan and Maryland, but both teams got big games on the ground out of their quarterbacks. Spencer Petras isn’t going to take off enough to be a problem, and he won’t be sharp enough with the passing attack.

Why Minnesota Will Win

The Gophers roared back in the second half of the 74-57 win over Northwestern with three after three and by going +9 in the rebounding margin.

This is a good enough rebounding team to clean up everything Iowa misses, but to pull this off, the three-point shooting has to stay hot. Minnesota doesn’t have the same offensive firepower overall, but if it can go 12-of-24 again from outside – like it did against the Wildcats – and hit everything from the line, it’ll make this interesting.

The team passes the ball well, it doesn’t turn the ball over, and it’s got the ability to go on runs if Iowa goes cold. There should be enough offensive rebounds to generate a few second-chance points, but …

“Go to the bank!” Today’s top pick of the day just released

Why Iowa Will Win

Iowa is way too strong from the field.

The Minnesota defense isn’t bad, but it doesn’t provide enough pressure, doesn’t take the ball away, and it doesn’t do enough when the O isn’t on. This isn’t a high-powered offensive team – the performance against Northwestern was a bit of an aberration – and Iowa is great inside and out with the top scoring offense in the Big Ten.

Minnesota moves the ball around well, but Iowa is far better at finding the extra shot and getting out on the move. It’s good enough on the offensive boards to generate second chance points of its own, and it should be able to score at a steadier pace.

What’s Going To Happen

Minnesota will bring the effort and will be up in the second half, but the offense won’t be consistent enough. Like the first matchup – a 58-55 Hawkeye win in Minneapolis – Iowa will do just enough inside and out to slip by.

Iowa (17-8) vs Minnesota (12-11) Game Preview

Why Minnesota Will Win

Iowa is struggling on the road.

It went on a nice run to build up a nice base, but it has lost three of its last five – all away from Iowa City. Even worse, it’s 1-5 on the road in Big Ten play with the only victory coming against a miserable Northwestern.

Minnesota is having a slew of issues in a variety of ways, but it’s great on the inside on the boards and coming up with blocks – it should be able to beat Iowa at its own game.

This is a high-powered Hawkeye offense that’s going to have a problem coming up with the offensive rebounds needed, but …

Why Iowa Will Win

Minnesota doesn’t force any mistakes.

It’s one of the worst teams in the country at forcing steals and mistakes. That’s a problem against a team that moves the ball around better than any in the Big Ten.

Iowa might have a problem against the Gophers up front, but it’ll come up with that one extra pass for the easy shot. That’s why it’s decent from the field – Minnesota isn’t. That goes for the line, too – Iowa can hit free throws a whole lot better than the Gophers.

What’s Going To Happen

Never mess with a streak, and that includes the Hawkeyes lately on the road. Minnesota might have lost four of its last six games, but it’s 10-1 in its last 11 games at home.
