Iowa vs Michigan Game Preview

Why Iowa Will Win

The Hawkeyes lost to Michigan a few weeks ago, and that was the only blip in February.

It won three straight before that and four straight after, cranking up its amazing offense to keep leading the Big Ten averaging 84 points per game.

Even when the shooting isn’t great, the Hawkeyes keep on scoring. It starts by dominating the boards, generating a ton of steals and points on the move, and it’s helped by being No. 1 in the nation in assist-to-turnover ratio.

On the flip side, Michigan has lost three of its last five games with a hit-or-miss attack from the outside and without enough offensive rebounds to make up for the slowdowns and inconsistencies.

But …

Why Michigan Will Win

What did Michigan do to beat Iowa the first time around?

It cranked up the defense that held Iowa to just 22% from three, but it won on the free throw line. The Wolverines made five more than The Hawkeyes did, and that might have to happen again.

Iowa will make at least 15 free throws, because that’s what it does – it gets to the line a whole lot. Michigan made 22-of-25 free throws in the loss to Illinois a few days ago, and it has to attack enough to force enough fouls to slow things down and match Iowa’s offense in some way.

Iowa leads the Big Ten in made free throws. Michigan needs to make that a non-factor.

What’s Going To Happen

Michigan really, really, really needs this.

Iowa’s offense travels, though.

There was a problem earlier in the season, but it’s find a groove over the last few weeks with three straight road wins thanks to the offense that’s been red hot.

Michigan will be able to keep up for stretches, but it won’t have the offense – or the free throws – to come through late.

Why Iowa Will Win

The Hawkeyes turned it all around a few weeks ago, and not they’ve been tremendously consistent at just the right time.

They went from having a high-flying offense that hung around the 80s and 90s to relying a bit more on the defensive side and being a wee bit more controlled. There are a few too many turnovers, but Iowa held four of the last five teams to under 40% from the field after doing that five times all year before that, and …

The offense can still score. Iowa is still third in the nation in scoring averaging 86 points per game overall, the O still moves the ball around extremely well, and the firepower is there to keep up with a Michigan team that’s going to keep on coming for a full 40 minutes with an even more efficient attack.

Basically, Iowa is built for this, and it’s improving.

Why Michigan Will Win

Michigan is a machine.

It might still get getting back up to speed after having a few weeks off, but it showed against Ohio State that everything is working again.

After going three games over a month hitting fewer than 47% of their shots, and then everything worked when needed on the road in a fun 92-87 win over Ohio State. The Wolverines are getting stronger and stronger from three, and that turned out to be a really, really big deal against the Buckeyes.

Michigan might have the Big Ten’s best field goal defense, but Ohio State hit just about everything from the field and the outside and it still wasn’t enough. So …

What’s Going To Happen

Iowa will be great from the field, it’ll keep connecting on just about everything from the outside, and Michigan will do more. It won’t be a walk in the park for the Wolverines, but they’ll keep finding their way to the basket and will stay hot on the line.

In such a tough basketball conference as the Big Ten, it’s only a matter of time before teams go through a rough patch. That’s currently the case for Michigan and Iowa, who meet on Friday. It will mark an important game for both schools, who hope a win can get them through the grind of the conference schedule. These teams met on Dec. 6 in a high scoring affair that saw Michigan beat Iowa 103-91.

No. 19 Michigan (11-5, 2-3) would rather forget Sunday’s 75-67 loss to Minnesota on the road in which the team was outscored by nine points in the second half. Zavier Simpson led the Wolverines in scoring with 19 points, but Michigan couldn’t stop the hot shooting of Minnesota, which was close to 55 percent. Michigan ranks first in the Big Ten in field goal percentage (.478), second in three-point accuracy (.363) and third in scoring offense (77.9). The team will continue to be without Isaiah Livers, who has been dealing with a groin injury since Dec. 21.

After starting off Big Ten play with a 1-3 record, the Hawkeyes have won two straight games, including their first road win, knocking off Northwestern 75-62 on Tuesday night. Now, Iowa (12-5, 3-3) can take a deep breath with three straight home games. Iowa held Northwestern to 36 percent shooting and 29 percent shooting from three-point range. Center Luke Garza was a beast, scoring a team-high 27 points. Garza was unbelievable in the first contest, scoring 44 points in the game. The same defensive intensity the team showed against Northwestern needs to happen again vs. Michigan if the Hawkeyes want a win.
