Longhorns back in the AP Poll after Texas upset Oklahoma State

Despite not making it into the Amway Coaches Poll, the AP Poll put the Texas Longhorns back into the top 25 after Saturday’s upset win.

The AP Poll has been released following the wild week nine over the weekend. The Oklahoma State Cowboys were the highest ranked team to fall but the Michigan Wolverines loss to Michigan State was also a big shock to some. The Big 12 Conference’s highest ranked team remains the Oklahoma State Cowboys who check in at No. 14. Next in the pecking order comes Iowa State, Oklahoma then Texas. The Kansas State Wildcats dropped from the poll after West Virginia pummeled them 37-10.

Big 12 Football: Oklahoma State and Baylor game postponed

A game scheduled for Saturday Oct. 17 has been postponed until Dec. 12. The Oklahoma State Cowboys and Baylor Bears moved due to COVID-19.

On Sunday evening the Big 12 Conference announced that the game between the Oklahoma State Cowboys and Baylor Bears has been postponed. The game originally set for Saturday Oct. 17 will now move to Dec. 12 according to a release from the conference.

The Big 12 Conference announces the postponement of the Saturday, October 17, Oklahoma State at Baylor football game.  Upon the recommendation of medical advisors, Baylor is suspending football operations temporarily after multiple positive COVID-19 test results.  The game has been rescheduled for Saturday, December 12.  The Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship remains tentatively scheduled for December 12 or 19 pending game results needed to determine the championship game participants.

Oklahoma State will be play next on Oct. 24 against the Iowa State Cyclones in Stillwater, Oklahoma. The Bears will also be back in action that day when they travel to Austin to play the Texas Longhorns. This marks the third time this season that Baylor has shut down all football operations. Their nonconference game against Louisiana Tech was postponed due to COVID-19. They scheduled a replacement game against the Houston Cougars before that game was postponed for the coronavirus as well..

Baylor last played a game against West Virginia on Oct. 3, it will have been 21 days between games for the Bears. The Longhorns are on a bye week before they return to Darrell K. Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Currently Oklahoma State sits atop the conference with Iowa State and Kansas State. If the game against Baylor is needed to determine the Big 12 Championship participants, the title game will be moved back to Dec. 19. Otherwise the game will remain on Dec. 12.

Big 12 Roundup: Iowa State and Kansas State stay perfect

The Iowa State Cyclones and Kansas State Wildcats have been two of the surprised in conference play after losing their opener.

The Texas Longhorns needed a win on Saturday as they were chasing two other teams in action. Iowa State and Kansas State looked to remain perfect and stay atop the Big 12 Conference standings. The Cyclones were hosting the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Wildcats took their show on the road as they traveled to Fort Worth, Texas, to play the Horned Frogs.

Texas Tech at Iowa State

Following their huge win over the Oklahoma Sooners, the Cyclones could have fallen into the trap game. Often when a team gets a huge win, they are prone to the letdown game. However, it didn’t happen in Ames, Iowa. The Red Raiders struck first on a blocked field goal where Zach McPherson ran it back 90 yards. The Iowa State defense however didn’t give up a single offensive point until the final five minutes of the game.

Breece Hall once again ran like a man possessed. He rushed for over 100 yards for a fourth straight game to open the season. The Tech defense had no answer as Iowa State averaged five yards per carry in this game. They had 227 yards on the ground, and Brock Purdy added 302 yards in the air. The offense held a 31-7 lead before Henry Colombi found Erik Ezukanma for the touchdown. The Cyclones won 31-15 and improved to 3-1.

They remained perfect in conference play. Next week, Iowa State will be on a bye week before heading to Stillwater to take on the undefeated Oklahoma State Cowboys. Texas Tech will host West Virginia after its bye week. Saturday’s game was a tough one for the Red Raiders, who might have a quarterback controversy on their hands.

Kansas State vs Texas Christian

It was an old school defensive slugfest between Kansas State and TCU. The Wildcats were without quarterback Skylar Thompson. Will Howard took all the snaps under center. Howard ran for 86 yards and touchdown. He added another 117 yards on the ground for KSU. The defense was able to harass the Horned Frogs quarterback.

A week after Max Duggan torched the Longhorns defense, he wasn’t able get it going against the Wildcats. Kansas State was able to get to Duggan for three sacks, ultimately ending with him being benched. Matthew Downing didn’t do any better for TCU. Duggan rushed for 43 yards and a touchdown but his passing wasn’t there for him.

The Wildcats defense held strong in this game. Despite the offense not putting up many points, the defense decided to take matters into their own hands. A.J. Parker picked off Downing to put the Wildcats up 21-7 in the third. Duggan did rush for a score with 3:39 left in the game but Kansas State joined Iowa State in staying perfect.

Next up for Kansas State is its yearly fight for state bragging rights. It will play Kansas. The Horned Frogs will look to get back on the winning side when they host the Oklahoma Sooners.

Week 4 Big 12 Roundup: Oklahoma State leads the way

The Big 12 Conference had all 10 teams in action on Saturday. Oklahoma State stayed ahead of everyone as the lone undefeated team.

It was another wild weekend in the Big 12 Conference. The Texas Longhorns started the day by losing to Texas Christian at home. The fun in the conference didn’t stop there. As it sits right now, the two teams who needed strong showings are sitting closer to the bottom of the conference, setting up a wild Red River Shootout in the Cotton Bowl.

Oklahoma loses its second straight game for the first time since 1998

Last year in Norman, the Iowa State Cyclones came within a point of the Sooners. It was a wild 42-41 win for Oklahoma as it marched toward the Big 12 championship and another College Football Playoff appearance. This time, the Cyclones were held off the Sooners 37-30.

In this contest, Spencer Rattler had a chance to lead a late rally. However, the game-tying pass attempt was picked off in the end zone with less than two minutes left. Using Breece Hall, the Cyclones ran out the clock. Brock Purdy was much better in this game than in the previous two weeks. Now Iowa State shares the lead in the Big 12 with a 2-0 conference record.

Oklahoma State steamrolls Kansas

The Kansas Jayhawks didn’t put up much of a fight against the Oklahoma State Cowboys in Lawrence. The Cowboys, playing without Spencer Sanders, had everything working. Chuba Hubbard looked like the player many thought might make a run at the Heisman Trophy. He averaged 7.3 yards per carry. Tylan Wallace also had a monster game.

Kansas looked like, well, Kansas. It was held scoreless until the game was over. In the fourth quarter, it got on the board with a touchdown from Velton Gardner. The Les Miles experience isn’t looking so great as it starts Year 2. The Cowboys won 47-7.

Kansas State wins the battle of backup quarterbacks

When the game started, the big matchup was Skylar Thompson against against Alan Bowman of Texas Tech. Neither quarterback finished, as the backups were asked to win this game. Thompson and Bowman combined for a total of 17 passes.

Henry Colombi led Texas Tech back into this game after it was shut out in the first half. Tech even led late in the second half. However, Kansas State made the plays when it needed. Deuce Vaughn once again made a big play that helped seal the win. Kansas State joined Oklahoma State and Iowa State atop the Big 12 Conference standings.

West Virginia survives overtime to beat Baylor

It was quite the low scoring affair. They were tied at halftime and again at the end of regulation. West Virginia scored first in each half on 1-yard touchdown runs only to see the Bears tie it up. Josh Fleeks of Baylor caught a 34-yard pass for a touchdown with just 1:19 remaining to force the extra session.

Jarret Doege threw two touchdowns in the overtimes to help WVU. However, the interception in the second overtime by Charlie Brewer sealed the deal. All the Mountaineers had to do was score at that point. The loss put Baylor in a tie with West Virginia, Texas and Texas Christian for fourth in the conference.

Red River Shootout: Texas and Oklahoma fighting for their lives

The outcomes of the Texas Christian and Iowa State games set up a wild game in the Cotton Bowl. The Longhorns and Sooners come in with a combined 1-3 record in the conference. Spencer Rattler has thrown interceptions on back-to-back weeks that essentially ended the game. Sam Ehlinger is coming off his worst performance through three games. Something has to give in Dallas.

Oklahoma loses second-straight game, upset by Iowa State 37-30

Oklahoma is in a position it hasn’t been in a long time. For the second-straight week, the Sooners were upset. This time by Iowa State.

Oklahoma is in a position it hasn’t been in a long time.

The Sooners were shocked a week ago in a 38-35 loss at home to Kansas State after turning the football over four times, getting a turnover on downs and a blocked punt. Iowa State has done it for the second-straight week as the Cyclones upset Oklahoma 37-30.

A back-and-forth game from the start, the Sooners jumped out to an early 17-6 lead. Iowa State chopped that 11-point deficit away piece-by-piece behind long drives with Breece Hall running it.

The Cyclones jumped out to a 23-20 lead after a 65-yard touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Xavier Hutchinson on a three-play scoring drive. A holding penalty on Tre Brown in the secondary negated a three-and-out and a stop.

Oklahoma responded with a short drive that ended with a Gabe Brkic 51-yard field goal. A takeaway after a strip-sack by Isaiah Thomas and a fumble recovery on the very next possession gave Oklahoma great field position.

The Sooners would go on a four-play, 39-yard scoring drive to take a 30-23 lead capped off by Jeremiah Hall’s second receiving touchdown.

Iowa State would score 14 unanswered after a long kickoff return setup a quick scoring drive, then the Cyclones got a stop and another quick score. A Spencer Rattler interception in the end zone on Oklahoma’s final drive secured the upset for Iowa State.

The 1-2 Sooners face off in their rivalry game against Texas at 11 a.m. CT next Saturday.
