Iowa at Minnesota odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Saturday’s Iowa at Minnesota odds and lines, with college football expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Iowa Hawkeyes (2-1) and Minnesota Golden Gophers (2-1) meet at Huntington Bank Stadium Friday. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Iowa vs. Minnesota odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Minnesota’s always been a run-first team, but this season it is showing a bit more balance. The Gophers are 2-1, with their only loss coming in the opener against North Carolina. Since then, their defense has really stepped up, pitching a shutout in their last game against Nevada. They cruised to a 27-0 win, covering the 14.5-point spread, although the game stayed under the 44.5 total. The defense is becoming a real strength for Minnesota as the season moves forward.

Iowa is 2-1 after a tough loss to Iowa State but bounced back with a 38-20 win over Troy. While the defense wasn’t at its best, the offense shined. RB Kaleb Johnson ran for 173 yards and 2 touchdowns on 25 carries, and QB Cade McNamara was efficient, completing 19 of 23 passes for 176 yards. It didn’t cover the 24-point spread, but the game easily went over the 39-point total.

Iowa at Minnesota picks and predictions

Prediction

Minnesota 21, Iowa 14

Moneyline

BET MINNESOTA (+120).

The Gophers have shown they can compete, especially with RB Darius Taylor leading the charge on offense. His ability to break through defenses, even ones as strong as Iowa’s, makes Minnesota a solid pick. QB Max Brosmer has been steady, and its defense has been opportunistic, consistently forcing turnovers when it matters most. Expect Minnesota to come out fast and maintain control throughout the game.

Against the spread

PASS.

I’m not going to play around with the spread because I’ve got the underdog Gophers winning outright.

Over/Under

AVOID.

Honestly, I’d stay away from betting the total. Both teams have solid defenses, so the under looks tempting, but Iowa’s offense is just too unpredictable. It has been decent, but really struggled against Iowa State. You never know which version of it is going to show up. Rather than stressing over the total, I’d stick to the ML and avoid the uncertainty. It’s just not worth the risk here.

AVOID.

There’s no value here either way.

Against the spread

BET IOWA -11.5 (-110).

Minnesota is just 5-6-1 ATS against conference opponents and has not covered well recently, failing to cover 3 in a row and losing all 3 games by at least 20 points. It has lost 4 of its last 6 games by 20 or more points.

Iowa is 7-6 ATS against Big Ten foes and is 3-2 ATS over its last 5. It is 2-2 ATS in its last 4 road games as well. Minnesota is just 3-10 ATS at home as well.

Considering the trends, back IOWA -11.5 (-110).

Over/Under

LEAN UNDER 147.5 (-115).

Minnesota has failed to score 50 points in 2 of its last 6 and has failed to top 60 in 5 of those 6. It has gone Under the projected total in 4 of its last 6 and is 7-15 O/U on the season.

Iowa is 4-2 O/U in its last 6, but has gone Under 75 points in 2 of its last 5. Considering the Golden Gophers’ struggles offensively, back the UNDER 147.5 (-115).

Iowa at Minnesota: Three things to know

  1. Iowa bounced back from a 99-88 loss to No. 1 Gonzaga (Dec. 19) with an impressive 70-55 home victory vs. Purdue in its Big Ten opener Tuesday. Senior C Luka Garza had a game-high 22 points and 9 rebounds vs. the Boilermakers as the Hawkeyes covered as 7-point favorites. Garza leads the country with 28.4 points per game and leads Iowa with 9.1 rebounds per game Junior G Joe Wieskamp, who scored 17 points vs. Purdue, averages 16.0 PPG and 6.6 RPG.
  2. Minnesota is coming off a 90-82 non-conference win vs. Saint Louis Sunday. G Marcus Carr scored 14 of his game-high 32 points from the free-throw line in the second half as the Golden Gophers pulled off the upset as 2-point underdogs. The junior leads the Gophers with 23.9 PPG – he has scored 28 or more points in three games. Minnesota opened the season 6-0 before dropping its Big Ten opener at then-No. 13 Illinois 92-65.
  3. Iowa has won the last two meetings vs. Minnesota, sweeping last season’s series. The Hawkeyes won in Minneapolis 58-55 as 4.5-point underdogs Feb. 16, and prevailed at home 72-52 as 5-point favorites Dec. 9, 2019. The Gophers took three of the previous four meetings before that.

Iowa at Minnesota: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 90, Minnesota 81

Money line (ML)

PASS. Backing Iowa (-350) would require risking 3½ your potential return. That’s just not a wise gambling strategy.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA -7.5 (-110) is worth a THREE-QUARTER UNIT WAGER. If the number climbs to 9 or higher, drop it to a half-unit bet. Minnesota’s defense has struggled early on, allowing 73.5 PPG to rank 247th in the nation. Iowa scores 95.1 PPG to rank second. The Gophers will have a tough time stopping Garza and the rest of the Hawkeyes’ offense.

ATS records: Iowa 6-2 | Minnesota 3-4-1

Over/Under (O/U)

The OVER 163.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Hawkeyes’ high-scoring offense was already mentioned. Well, their defense is nothing to write home about. They give up 70.6 PPG.

This should be a fast-pace game with Garza and Carr putting on a show.

O/U records: Iowa 7-1 | Minnesota 6-2

  • Over/Under: 57.5 (O: -115 | U: -106)

Iowa at Minnesota: Three things to know

  1. After losing the first two games of the season by a combined 5 points, the Hawkeyes went to East Lansing and crushed Michigan State 49-7 as 5.5-point favorites last week. RB Tyler Goodson ran for 113 yards and 2 touchdowns on 14 carries as the Hawkeyes outrushed the Spartans 226-59. QB Spencer Petras threw for 167 yards and 1 touchdown, WR Charlie Jones added a 54-yard punt return for a TD, and the defense finished with 3 turnovers – all interceptions.
  2. The Golden Gophers also picked up their first win of 2020 with a 41-14 rout at winless Illinois last Saturday. RB Mohamed Ibrahim ran for 224 yards and 4 TDs on 30 carries – he had 207 rushing yards and 4 TDs the previous week. QB Tanner Morgan completed 17 of 27 passes for 231 yards and a score as the Gophers easily covered as 7.5-point favorites. They lead the Big Ten West Division with 439.3 yards per game.
  3. Iowa has won the last 5 in the series, including last season’s 23-19 home victory that spoiled then-No. 8 Minnesota’s hopes of making the College Football Playoff. The Gophers were 9-0 at the time.

Iowa at Minnesota: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Iowa 27, Minnesota 21

Money line (ML)

PASS. Unless you prefer to lay -167 juice over laying the points at -110.

Against the spread (ATS)

IOWA -3.5 (-110) is the play. Both teams should be feeling confident after impressive wins last week, but they came against inferior teams. The Hawkeyes get the nod because of defense. Iowa is allowing 17.3 points per game (15th in the country), and 315.0 yards per game (19th). Minnesota yields 36.0 PPG (92nd) and 480 YPG (112). As long as the Hawkeyes can slow down Gophers RB Ibrahim, the Floyd of Rosedale trophy remains in Iowa City.

Over/Under (O/U)

The UNDER 57.5 (-106) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. Expect both teams to attempt to win this one at the line of scrimmage with a strong running game. That takes time off the clock. Plus, Iowa’s defense is overlooked. It’s already played tough games – both losses – vs. Purdue and Northwestern.
