In the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Championship Game, the 11-seed Marist Red Foxes (13-19, 9-14) face the 1-seed Iona Gaels (26-7, 21-3) Saturday, with an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament on the line. Tip is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET at the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City, N.J. (ESPNU/ESPN+). Marist has been wearing Cinderella’s slipper throughout this tourney, winning against Manhattan, Quinnipiac and St. Peter’s to become the first 11-seed to advance to the conference championship game.

Iona topped Mount St. Mary’s in the first tournament game by a 74-54 count, covering a 14.5-point number. The Gaels had a little more trouble with Niagara, before finally pulling away for a 71-59 win. The Purple Eagles covered as 13.5-point ‘dogs, however. The Under has cashed in both tourney outings, too.

Iona had no trouble with Marist during the regular season, winning 84-57 in Poughkeepsie as a 12-point favorite, Jan. 6, as the Over hit, before the Over cashed in a 93-74 home win as a 16-point favorite. In fact, the Gaels have won 13 straight games dating back to a Jan. 27 setback at Siena.

Against the spread

IONA -15.5 (-115) is worth playing, even though this is a huge number for a championship game.

It’s tempting to play Marist +15.5 (-105), as it has been on a tremendous, kind-out-of-nowhere run. Alumnus Rik Smits would be proud. But the Red Foxes isn’t a wise move.

Even with Rick Pitino’s name being bandied about for a potential Big East job, there won’t be enough distraction to blow the Gaels off track.

Over/Under

OVER 136.5 (-105) is a slam-dunk play in this title game.

Iona rolled up 93 points in the most recent meeting, and averaged 88.5 PPG in 2 meetings in the regular season. Marist had a healthy 74 points in the most recent meeting March 2, and the Over is 9-3 in its past 12 games overall.

The Crimson Tide have fired out of the gate with four victories in four tries, including a 3-1 ATS mark. The Tide is coming off an 86-59 victory over Oakland University on Friday.

Rick Pitino’s Gaels have been impressive, winning all five of its games so far. Iona topped Appalachian State in the opener, and they had a close shave against Harvard in an OT win on Nov. 13. The past three games have been win and covers against Hofstra, Liberty and North Alabama.

AVOID, and look to the line instead.

Against the spread

IONA +12.5 (-120) is the lean here as Pitino’s bunch will have revenge on its mind. These teams met just last March with the Tide getting the best of the Gaels 68-55.

I don’t think Iona has enough in the tank to pull off the Thanksgiving upset, but with Louisville transfer Quinn Slazinski, and SMU transfer Tyson Jolly, the Gaels have some talent to hang tough like they did last March. Iona is a perfect 2-0 ATS in the past two neutral-site games, too.

Over/Under

OVER 149.5 (-107) is the lean, ever so slightly. The Tide hit the Over in the first two games this season before managing the Under in each of the past two. The Over has connected in three of the past four games, dropping 81 or more points in three of the past four.

Alabama has been playing tremendous basketball lately, culminating in a SEC conference tournament title against LSU. They have won six in a row overall, while covering four of the past five outings. The Volunteers are also a solid 7-3 SU and 6-4 ATS across their past 10 games against teams in the NCAA Tournament field, so they’re battle tested.

The big story for Iona is the man at the helm, as head coach Rick Pitino leads his fifth different school to the NCAA Tournament. Alabama (-2500) is heavily favored to win this one, and it’s hard to envision many scenarios where that doesn’t happen. But Ohio State served as a cautionary tale on Friday as to why you do not play giant money lines. AVOID.

Against the spread (ATS)

ALABAMA -16.5 (-110) is a tremendous play laying the points, even though Iona +16.5 (-110) is 5-0-1 ATS across its past six games. The Gaels are undersized and will struggle mightily against the Crimson Tide, who are strong down low but also a decent 3-point shooting team, too. The Tide are also 4-1 ATS across the past five as a favorite.

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 146.5 (-110) is the lean, mostly because of Alabama’s high-octane offense. The Tide have posted 79.6 PPG, which ranked 31st in the regular season. Iona closed the regular season on a 5-1 Over run, although the Over hit just once in their four games in the MAAC tourney. The Gaels might have difficulty scoring against Bama’s solid D, so only go lightly on the Over.

Previewing Saturday’s Iona Gaels vs. Alabama Crimson Tide odds and lines during their March Madness Round 1 matchup.

The 15-seed Iona Gaels (12-5) meet the 2-seed Alabama Crimson Tide (24-6) Saturday, March 20 for a first-round game in the East Regional at the Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis. The tip-off is set for 4 p.m. ET and will be airing on TBS.

Legendary head coach Rick Pitino has led the Gaels to the NCAA Tournament, the fifth school he has helped to the Big Dance.

The Gaels needed to win four games in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) tournament, and they did just that, dispatching Quinnipiac, Siena, Niagara and Fairfield in the final while going 3-0-1 ATS during the run.

Iona has won six in a row overall, and they’re 5-0-1 ATS during the span dating back to Feb. 17, their last loss at Quinnipiac. Overall, Iona went 11-5-1 ATS against the spread this season.

The Gaels will be making their fifth consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. They fell to North Carolina in the first round in 2019, 88-73. They have lost 13 straight games in the Big Dance since their lone win over Holy Cross in the first round back in 1980.

Alabama topped LSU 80-79 in the SEC Tournament Final and they secured a two-seed as a result. They have won six in a row since its last setback at Arkansas on Feb. 24, and they’re 4-1 ATS across the past five outings.

The Crimson Tide used a combination of high scoring (79.6 PPG) and solid defense (70.3 PPG) to pick up 24 wins, a regular-season conference crown and the league tourney trophy.

They’re also one of the top units defensively against the three, allowing opponents to hit just 29.0 percent from behind the arc, good for 16th in the country.

Alabama has its highest seed since 2002 when they were also a 2-seed. They pushed past scrappy Florida Atlantic in Greenville, S.C. in the first round that season under head coach Mark Gottfried before falling to JUCO transfer Antonio Gates and Kent State in the second round.
