MLB legend Ken Griffey Jr. worked as a photographer at one of Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami matches

Ken Griffey Jr. really can do it all.

Legendary MLB player Ken Griffey Jr. has a fantastic side gig, and he put it to good use on Wednesday night for an MLS match between Inter Miami and Nashville SC.

The Hall of Famer brought his best photography gear and snapped pictures in the media photography zone of the game, which featured soccer legend Lionel Messi playing for Miami.

The game had one all-time talent photographing another, as it was really cool to see Griffey using his photography skills to get a close-up of another icon.

We hope Griffey continues to break out his camera and snap some more pictures of sporting legends because this is just too cool.

Griffey probably had the photo pit pretty starstruck to be joined by such a monumental figure in baseball, but he was just there working like everyone else during Wednesday night’s MLS match.

We hope Griffey and Messi got to say hello to each other after the game ended, if only because that’d be a sports meeting for the ages.

Lionel Messi didn’t score in an MLS game. Is that even legal?

What do you mean, Messi didn’t score?

Someone in MLS finally managed to stop Lionel Messi.

Messi and Inter Miami could only manage a 0-0 draw with Nashville SC, marking the first time that any team has managed to keep the Argentine legend from scoring or assisting a goal.

Coming into the match, Messi had scored in all seven of Miami’s Leagues Cup matches, followed by two assists in a wild U.S. Open Cup semifinal. Even when restricted to a substitute’s role in his MLS debut, Messi scored another delightful goal.

That short night’s work set him up to make his first start in MLS play Wednesday night, and in a quirk of the schedule, it just so happened to be a rematch of an epic Leagues Cup final. Less than two weeks ago, Miami won in dramatic fashion, but this game was a bit different.

For one thing, Nashville choose to rest its own star No. 10, Hany Mukhtar, a nod to the reality of life in the league as MLS served up a nearly full slate of mid-week matches in the summer heat.

Messi Mania remained a strange experience for longtime MLS fans. How often, for example, would you expect to see baseball legend Ken Griffey Jr. working a midseason Wednesday night match on a photographer’s credential?

Or, for that matter, when are you going to see Gianni Infantino turn up to see a mid-week game featuring what was at kickoff MLS’s 27th-best team?

Unusual guests or not, Nashville once again proved itself to be a team that can unsettle Miami.

The Herons, with Messi largely restricted to creating for others rather than calling his own number, saw a small handful of looks fly wide or high. Miami enjoyed 74% of the possession, but the two teams combined for just 0.56 total expected goals in a choppy first half.

The biggest moment in the opening 45 minutes may have ended up being nothing more spectacular than Sergio Busquets grabbing referee Chris Penso with both hands and not being booked for doing so.

Nashville sent Mukhtar on at halftime, benefitting from a more open game as Miami — who remain in desperate need of points — started taking more risks.

If anything, Miami ended up lucky to escape with anything. First, Mukhtar’s finish past Drake Callender was chalked off for offside. Later, Jacob Shaffelburg’s late cross struck DeAndre Yedlin’s right arm seemingly inside the box.

A stoppage-time VAR check into it did reveal the handling offense, but also caught the Nashville winger for being offside earlier in the move, negating what would have been a gut-punch penalty kick call.

Deep in stoppage time, Messi nearly conjured up a goal that for him would be ordinary, and for anyone else would be a miracle. He raced past multiple Nashville players, pinging a low shot with his less-favored right foot towards goal that forced Elliot Panicco into his best save of the night.

While Miami may look at getting a shutout against a good team as some kind of positive, the reality is that the home draw is a severe blow to the team’s already remote playoff hopes. Miami trudged off the field at DRV PNK Stadium 10 points out of a playoff place with 10 games to play, and were fortunate that the Chicago Fire (who lost later on Wednesday) didn’t increase that gap.

In other words, even Messi might not be able to wriggle out of this particular jam.

Cremaschi headlines USMNT roster for September friendlies

The Inter Miami teenager is a dual-national who is also still eligible to represent Argentina

Inter Miami midfielder Benjamin Cremaschi was named to Gregg Berhalter’s 24-man U.S. men’s national team roster for September friendlies against Uzbekistan and Oman.

Cremaschi, 18, has spent time with the youth national teams of the U.S. and Argentina, and remains eligible for both. The midfielder has impressed with Miami in his first season of senior-team action, and said recently that he’d been speaking with Inter Miami’s Argentine superstar Lionel Messi about his international future.

Along with Cremaschi, Kristoffer Lund is the other newcomer to the USMNT roster. The 21-year-old Palermo left back represented Denmark throughout his youth career, but has filed a one-time change of association to switch to the USMNT.

The USMNT will host Uzbekistan on September 9 at CityPark in St. Louis (5:30 p.m. ET, TNT, Telemundo), before facing Oman on September 12 at Allianz Field in St. Paul, Minnesota (8:30 p.m. ET, TNT).

The two games will also mark the return of Gregg Berhalter, who was re-hired as head coach in June following six months away from the team.

“We are thrilled to have a number of core players in this group while also being able to introduce some new faces to the senior team,” Berhalter said. “Uzbekistan and Oman are types of teams we could face in the World Cup, so it’s an important opportunity to gain that experience.”

Berhalter’s roster features 12 players who were part of the 2022 World Cup squad, including Christian Pulisic, who has the most caps on the current roster with 60.

Some key players will miss out due to injury, including Gio Reyna, Tyler Adams, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Walker Zimmerman, Taylor Booth and Josh Sargent.

How to watch Lionel Messi and Inter Miami vs. Nashville SC

Is there more Messi magic to come in another MLS outing?

In his first-ever Major League Soccer action, Lionel Messi scored and Inter Miami won.

Try not to act too shocked.

Messi brought excellent form to begin his North American career in cup competition, leading Inter Miami to a Leagues Cup title and then to an Open Cup semifinal victory over FC Cincinnati.

Saturday’s matchup with the New York Red Bulls was the first MLS match for Inter Miami since the arrivals of Messi and his former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba.

Amid a crowded set of fixtures, Messi and Busquets were rested in New York while Alba started the game.

However, Messi and Busquets entered the contest (along with United States international DeAndre Yedlin) with 30 minutes remaining — and yes, as noted, Messi still scored as a substitute.

[afflinkbutton text=”Watch Messi and Inter Miami on Apple TV” link=”https://apple.co/3sxjdAd”]

The 2-0 win over the Red Bulls pulled Inter off the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.

Still unbeaten since the arrival of Messi, next up is a team with revenge on their mind.

Miami hosts Nashville SC, the same side Inter defeated in the Leagues Cup final. It took a long shootout, which indicates a close fight could be on the docket for MLS fans.

With 21 points (14th place), Inter still sits 11 points back from a playoff spot. Meanwhile, Nashville will want to add to their 38 points which sees them positioned seventh in the table.

Here is everything you need to know to catch all the action:

Watch: Rutgers football legend Eric LeGrand has ‘Messi Mania’

Former Rutgers football player Eric LeGrand goes all in on Lionel Messi.

Eric LeGrand is seemingly everywhere these days. The former Rutgers football player, now a radio analyst and entrepreneur, made his way to Red Bull Arena on Saturday night to watch Inter Miami and Lionel Messi in action.

The MLS match was the biggest sports event of the weekend in the tristate area (sorry New York Jets and Aaron Rodgers fans). With over 26,000 fans in attendance, the largest crowd ever at Red Bull Arena, Inter Miami secured three points with a 2-0 victory over the Red Bulls.

It was the MLS debut for Messi, who is considered the greatest active player in international soccer and argued by many to be the greatest player ever in the history of the game. Messi signed with Inter Miami this summer

LeGrand was one of several notable VIPs in attendance on Saturday night including musician Fat Joe, actor Kal Penn and New Jersey governor Phil Murphy among others.

Messi, who came into the match in the second half, scored late in the game ot secure the road win for Inter Miami.

LeGrand has become quite the soccer fan, frequenting Red Bulls games as well as Gotham FC, the local NWSL team.

No word if Messi stopped by LeGrand Coffee House on his way out of town for his daily cup of ‘Believe.’

Also in attendance on Saturday night was Rutgers men’s soccer head coach Jim McElderry. He attended the match with his son, Liam, who is a standout defender at Delbarton.

Lionel Messi’s son Thiago joins Inter Miami U-12 side

The 10-year-old will link up with Inter Miami’s academy for the 2023-24 season

There is now more than one Messi playing for Inter Miami.

The club has announced that Thiago Messi, son of Lionel Messi, has joined up with its Under-12 side ahead of the 2023-24 season.

The 10-year-old is one of 150 players who will play for Inter Miami’s academy, which ranges from U-12 to U-19 sides, and is one of 35 newcomers this season.

Thiago, born in 2012, is the eldest of Messi’s three sons, followed by Mateo (2015) and Ciro (2018).

He’ll aim to follow in the footsteps of not only his superstar father, but the previous six homegrowns who have signed first-team contracts with Inter Miami: Noah Allen, Edison Azcona, Benjamin Cremaschi, Ian Fray, David Ruiz and Felipe Valencia.

Inter Miami’s academy has previously seen co-owner David Beckham’s son Romeo, and ex-coach Phil Neville’s son Harvey among its ranks.

While Thiago begins his journey with Inter Miami, his father continues to experience huge success with the club’s first team. The 36-year-old has led Inter Miami to a nine-game unbeaten run in all competitions since his July debut, including a Leagues Cup title.

Martino: Messi will miss ‘at least’ three games with Argentina duty

Inter Miami will have to win without the Argentine star to make the MLS postseason

If Inter Miami hopes to make an improbable push to the MLS playoffs, it won’t be able to count on Lionel Messi the entire way through.

Messi made a spectacular MLS debut on Saturday night against the New York Red Bulls, coming off the bench to score a late clincher in a 2-0 win at Red Bull Arena.

The win pushed Inter Miami off the bottom of the Eastern Conference table, but the club still has a mountain to climb as it sits 11 points off the final playoff spot in the East.

With Messi onboard, however, anything seems possible for the Herons. The Argentine star has led the team to a nine-game unbeaten run since his arrival, which has included a Leagues Cup title.

But speaking after the game against the Red Bulls, Inter head coach Tata Martino said that Messi would miss at least three of the club’s games down the stretch due to international duty.

“I firmly believe that it’s pivotal to appreciate the significance of this victory, as we must adapt to the reality that Leo will be joining his national team,” Martino said.

“He’ll miss at least three games this year and next year it will be the same, and we need to understand that when he’s not here the team still needs to provide results.”

Argentina will face Ecuador and Bolivia in World Cup qualifiers on September 7 and 12, and will also have World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Peru on October 12 and 17.

Inter Miami faces Sporting Kansas City at home on September 9, a game Messi looks certain to miss if he’s called up by Argentina. Inter Miami’s September 16 game at Atlanta United could be in question for Messi as well.

Inter Miami plays on October 7 against FC Cincinnati and then on October 18 and 21 against Charlotte FC, with Messi potentially missing one or more of those matches.

Messi scores in first MLS match, because of course he did

Messi only needed half an hour to get yet another goal

Lionel Messi came to New York (or close to it) for a good time, not a long time.

Messi made his MLS debut off the bench, but still managed to score just about the easiest goal he’s going to score for Inter Miami, who got a valuable 2-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on Saturday.

Much has been made of Messi’s arrival for Inter Miami, given that he is a) Lionel Messi, and b) has provided a constant supply of highlight-reel plays and moments. However, despite playing a bunch of games against MLS teams in the Leagues Cup, and then escaping an epic U.S. Open Cup semifinal with another victory, he hadn’t actually played an MLS game yet.

Manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino indicated that he would have to give Messi a rest at some point, which while disappointing for a lot of folks is just a recognition of Messi’s age, the travel involved in MLS, and Miami’s preposterously jammed schedule.

However, a Red Bull Arena crowd of 26,276 — a record for the stadium — only had to wait an hour before Martino answered their “we want Messi!” chants, bringing the global legend on alongside Sergio Busquets and DeAndre Yedlin with Miami leading 1-0.

With the Red Bulls pushing for an equalizer, much of the action happened at the north end of Red Bull Arena. Drake Callender had to preserve the win with a stellar late save, before Messi put the game on ice with casual ease.

Even a Messi tap-in is special, though, with the wizard from Rosario playing an unreal pass to Benjamin Cremaschi seconds before tapping home from two yards out.

The Messi phenomenon has become such a big deal that it naturally has also started to get a little weird. Take, for example, a bunch of people standing around Times Square to watch two MLS teams that sit outside the Eastern Conference playoff places play on a billboard.

Miami climbed out of last place in MLS’s Eastern Conference with the win, while Messi is — after just nine games — now alone as the third-highest scorer in Inter Miami history. You know, just a normal situation for late August when a team signs a guy early in the transfer window.

How to watch Inter Miami vs. New York Red Bulls: Messi set for MLS debut

Messi, along with Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are finally set to make their MLS debuts

Lionel Messi has long since arrived in North America, but he’s only played in cup competitions thus far with Inter Miami. That all changes on Saturday.

Messi, along with former Barcelona teammates Sergio Busquets and Jordi Alba, are all set to make their MLS debuts with an away game against the New York Red Bulls. The trio already won the Leagues Cup and will have the U.S. Open Cup final next month.

Until then, it’s all about league play which begins with the game at Red Bull Arena.

MLS play will be a much different challenge for Messi and Co. As impressive as the Argentine has been, it would be a sensational achievement if Inter Miami makes the MLS playoffs. Inter sits in the bottom of the Eastern Conference and are 14 points from a postseason position with 11 games to go.

But as Messi has reminded us: It’s never wise to count him out. Here is everything you need to know to catch all the action:
