RB Ameer Abdullah injury update

Abdullah left in the third quarter last Sunday with a foot injury. He had put up the best game of his career, and first ever 100-yard rushing performance.

Should he be unable to go, Alexander Mattison would start at running back. Zamir White and Sincere McCormick are both on injured reserve.

G Jordan Meredith injury update

Meredith has missed the past two weeks with an ankle injury. He begins the final week of practices sidelined as well. Should he be unable to go, Jackson Powers-Johnson would again line up at left guard and Andre James would start at center.

Commanders open RB Austin Ekeler’s 21-day practice window

Austin Ekeler is nearing a return to action.

On Wednesday afternoon, the Washington Commanders received some good news. The team announced running back Austin Ekeler’s 21-day practice window had opened.

Ekeler, who suffered a concussion in the final seconds of Washington’s Week 12 game vs. Dallas, was placed on injured reserve and missed the previous four games. It was Ekeler’s second concussion of the season.

“It’s great to have him back,” head coach Dan Quinn said Wednesday. “We just got done with our walkthrough not long ago and he’s had great workouts, all the speed of everything, but just to have him back on the field today was really cool. There’s a spring in his step for sure and we’ll go through the whole process today, Wednesday’s, Thursday’s, Friday’s practice, but we’re really pumped to have him back out on the field.”

The Commanders clinched a playoff berth with Sunday’s win over the Falcons but hope to remain the No. 6 seed in the NFC playoffs. Washington plays at Dallas on Sunday.

Ekeler spoke about his potential return on “Grant and Danny” of 106.7 The Fan in Washington earlier this week.

“There are a lot of boxes that need to be checked with concussion protocol and that, but you don’t really know — you have to make sure the independent (neurologists) are taking their time and doing due diligence and feel comfortable with you getting back on the field,” Ekeler said. “That’s out of my control, so it’s a process; hurdles have been cleared, but that will tell me when I’m able to get back on the field.”

Whether it’s this week against Dallas or next week in the NFC Wild Card round, it appears Ekeler is close to a return, which is great news for quarterback Jayden Daniels and the offense.

Commanders’ injury news: RB Austin Ekeler provides an update

When will Commanders RB Austin Ekeler return?

The Washington Commanders could get a significant contributor to their offense back this week in the regular-season finale against the Dallas Cowboys. Running back Austin Ekeler is eligible to return from injured reserve after missing the last four games.

Coincidentally enough, it was against the Dallas Cowboys at the end of their Week 12 matchup, where Ekeler suffered his second concussion of the season. Ekeler later explained why it was a scary time for him.

On Monday, Ekeler joined “Grant and Danny” on 106.7 The Fan in Washington, D.C., and gave an update on his health.

“This is one category it’s tough to talk about, just because you don’t want to say something and something else happens, so it’s kind of a week-to-week thing,” Ekeler said via Lou DiPietro of Audacy. “Unfortunately, right now that’s all I can really say on it, just so I can be in alignment with what is out there in the public, but my hope is that I can get back and make more contributions to this team, hopefully soon.”

Ekeler is in the NFL’s concussion protocol, so he must complete many important steps before returning to action.

There are a lot of boxes that need to be checked with concussion protocol and that, but you don’t really know — you have to make sure the independent (neurologists) are taking their time and doing due diligence and feel comfortable with you getting back on the field. That’s out of my control, so it’s a process; hurdles have been cleared, but that will tell me when I’m able to get back on the field.”

Something worth noting here: Ekeler said “hurdles have been cleared.” That’s good news, but it does not mean he can return against Dallas. The Commanders may keep him sidelined for another week, with the hope that he can return for the playoffs.

Ekeler was having a good season as one of quarterback Jayden Daniels’ top targets before his injury. In 11 games, Ekeler has rushed for 355 yards, averaging 4.8 yards per rush, and scored four rushing touchdowns. Ekeler has caught 33 passes for 346 yards. With players like Noah Brown and Dyami Brown sidelined, Daniels and the Commanders would love to get Ekeler back in time for the playoffs — if not sooner.

Tyler Biadasz injury vs Falcons: Latest news on Commanders C

The latest injury update on Commanders center Tyler Biadasz.

When the Washington Commanders were without starting center Tyler Biadasz two weeks ago against the New Orleans Saints, they missed him. While veteran Michael Deiter is a capable veteran, Washington’s running game wasn’t the same without Biadasz.

Biadasz returned in Week 16, helping lead the Commanders to a win over the Philadelphia Eagles, ending their 10-game winning streak. However, during the second quarter of Washington’s Week 17 game against the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday Night Football, Biadasz injured his ankle and immediately went into the blue medical tent.

Deiter replaced him, and the Commanders said he was questionable to return with an ankle injury.

Biadasz came out of halftime with heavy tape on the injured ankle and was working on the sideline, testing the ankle. However, he has yet to return, with the Commanders scoring touchdowns on their first two drives of the second half.

We’ll continue to monitor Biadasz’s injury situation. The Commanders face Biadasz’s old team, the Cowboys, in Week 18.

Falcons lead Commanders at halftime: Four quick takeaways from the first half

Four takeaways from an ugly first half for the Commanders.

Things could not have started any better for the Washington Commanders in their Week 17 showdown with the Atlanta Falcons. Washington safety Quan Martin intercepted Atlanta quarterback Michael Penix Jr. and returned it into Falcons’ territory.

Quarterback Jayden Daniels took care of the rest, ending the drive with a short touchdown pass to wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus.

From there, things went downhill. The Falcons scored two touchdowns to take a 14-7 lead and ended the half with a field goal to take a 17-7 lead into halftime.

Here are four takeaways from what went wrong in the first half for Washington.

Penalties

Penalties were a problem against the Eagles last week, as Washington was penalized for 93 yards. In the first half against Atlanta, the Commanders were penalized six times for 50 yards. One of those penalties proved extremely costly, as cornerback Mike Sainristil lined up in the neutral zone on Atlanta’s first field-goal attempt. It wiped out the field goal and continued the Falcons’ drive. Other penalties, including two holding penalties, pushed the offense back.

Tyler Biadasz injury

Tyler Biadasz has been the Commanders’ best offensive lineman this year, stabilizing the center position. When he missed a game earlier this season, the dropoff was noticeable. Biadasz had to be helped off the field late in the second quarter, and it did not look good.

More McLaurin

Terry McLaurin received one target in the first. He caught the pass for five yards. It’s a broken record, but Washington’s offense works best when it runs through McLaurin. Feed him the ball. Olamide Zaccheaus has been excellent again, but McLaurin needs multiple targets on the Commanders’ first drive coming out of halftime.

Can’t stop the run

The theme of this season is Washington’s inability to stop the run. Saquon Barkley ran all over the Commanders last week, but the defense tightened up in the second half. We are likely to see Washington selling out to stop Robinson in the second half, which means a lot of one-on-one matchups for the secondary. That’s probably not ideal, considering the Commanders’ secondary issues.

The Falcons rushed for 101 yards in the first half, with Robinson rushing for 82 and two touchdowns.

Commanders QB Jayden Daniels is fine after ugly hit vs. Falcons

Daniels was fine after scary hit.

Every Washington Commanders fan was nervous late in the first quarter of Sunday night’s game against the Atlanta Falcons when rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels took a nasty hit.

Facing a second-and-10 from the 30-yard line, Atlanta linebacker JD Bertrand ran through running back Brian Robinson’s block, sacking Daniels. In the process, Daniels’ right leg was bent underneath his body.

Daniels promptly got up and took the next snap, completing a pass to wide receiver Olamide Zaccheaus before Washington was forced to punt.

Here’s the play.

Washington doctors quickly surrounded Daniels, who waved them off and told them he was fine. Daniels went to the bench and began preparing for the next drive.

Fans across social media had flashbacks of 2012 when then-rookie quarterback Robert Griffin III injured his knee against the Baltimore Ravens and later reinjured the knee in a playoff loss to the Seattle Seahawks.

Commanders defense receives good news ahead of Week 17

Good news for the Commanders.

Dan Quinn confirmed Friday that Commanders defensive tackle Jonathan Allen is back!

Allen, who tore a pectoral muscle in Washington’s Week 6 loss to the Ravens, seemed lost for the season. However, surgery that week revealed the injury was only a partial tear. Allen, therefore, began rehab earlier and surprised the fan base last week when he returned to practice.

Quinn stated Friday that Allen is ready.

“He had a really good week. So, that’s the thing I was really looking for. Would he be able to hit all the markers in practice (contact, going, run game, pass game)? It was great to see him. I had a good sense yesterday that the arrow was trending up, and then I saw that again today.”

Washington chose Allen with the 17th selection in the 2017 NFL Draft. Therefore, Allen played seven seasons for Washington without a winning record in a single season. Only one season was not a losing season when Washington went 8-8-1 in 2022.

With his pectoral injury seemingly ending his 2024 season, there was much talk in the DMV sports media that Allen might have played his last game for the Commanders. One reason is his contract, which still has a major salary cap hit of $23M in 2025. Only Daron Payne ($26M) and Terry McLaurin ($25M) are scheduled to make more for the Commanders in 2025.

It’s great to see Allen return and be able to enjoy contributing to a winning team. Hopefully he, unlike Lattimore, will not re-injure himself in his return this season. Best wishes for Allen in his return.

Commanders rule out 5, including Marshon Lattimore for Week 17 vs. Falcons

Marshon Lattimore is one of five Commanders who will miss Sunday’s game vs. Falcons.

The Washington Commanders (10-5) will be shorthanded on Sunday when they host the Atlanta Falcons (8-7). On Friday, Washington ruled out five players, including cornerback Marshon Lattimore, for Sunday’s NFC showdown.

Here are the five players Washington ruled out:

  • CB Marshon Lattimore (hamstring)
  • RT Andrew Wylie (groin)
  • WR Dyami Brown (hamstring)
  • LB Jordan Magee (hamstring)
  • S Tyler Owens (ankle)

Of the five, only two are starters — Lattimore and Wylie — but Brown is a significant part of the offense, and his role has recently increased. He injured his hamstring in last week’s win over the Eagles after making a 51-yard catch. Brown has caught 11 passes on 14 targets in the previous three games.

Wylie injured his groin last week, but Cornelius Lucas is a capable replacement. Lucas has appeared in 13 games this season, with six starts. He’s played left and right tackle this season.

Magee and Owens, both rookies, contribute primarily on special teams, with Owens quickly becoming one of Washington’s best special-teamers this season.

Finally, there is Lattimore. The Commanders traded for him at the NFL trade deadline, and he missed the first four games after the trade. Lattimore was dealing with a preexisting hamstring injury during the trade.

Head coach Dan Quinn said Lattimore reaggravated the previous hamstring injury. If Washington clinches a playoff berth on Sunday, it’s doubtful Lattimore could play in the regular-season finale at Dallas, whether he’s healthy or not.

Quinn also said Benjamin St-Juste and Michael Davis would work in Lattimore’s spot. St-Juste, the former starter, has struggled in limited appearances over the last two games.

In some good news, defensive tackle Jonathan Allen is questionable, but signs indicate his return from a partially torn pec.

Will Derek Carr play vs Raiders? Injury updates for Saints QB

Saints QB Derek Carr has been dealing with a hand injury and was trying to return to face his former team. Here are the latest updates.

This week, Saints head coach Darren Rizzi expressed some hope Derek Carr could return this week when the Saints face the team Carr spent the first nine years of his career before finally being cut and signing with the Saints.

Rizzi said Carr was working hard to try and get back on the field to face the Raiders. As you can understand considering it would be his first — and possibly only — chance to face the team he once swore he would play for only them before screwing them over on a trade and forcing them to cut him instead.

Derek Carr injury update

Carr didn’t show enough to prove he was healthy enough to go. He missed practice all week and has officially been ruled OUT on the Saints injury report.

How long will Derek Carr be out?

Initially when Carr broke his hand, it was assumed to be a season-ending injury. The idea that he might return came up this week with his former team coming to town. I would expect that with just one more game, he will indeed not return this season.

Saints QB depth chart

Rookie Spencer Rattler is expected to again start in Carr’s place. Jake Haener is also in the mix, especially after the Saints were shut out Monday night against the Packers.

G Jordan Meredith injury update

Meredith is officially OUT again this week vs the Saints. He injured his ankle in the team’s loss to the Falcons in Week 15. He missed last week’s game against the Jaguars.

Jackson Powers-Johnson will again line up at left guard and Andre James would start at center.

QB Derek Carr injury update

Carr has been ruled OUT for the game.

Carr fractured his left hand on December 8 and had been trying to return to face his former team this week. His head coach is still hopeful there is a chance Carr could play this week. But in the end, it was too ambitious.

RB Alvin Kamara injury update

Kamara has also been ruled OUT for the game.
