Halftime: Tennessee clinging to 6-3 lead over Hoosiers

2020 Gator Bowl.

JACKSONVILLE — Tennessee was simply dominant in the first half of the TaxSlayer Gator Bowl, but that hasn’t translated to a big lead against the Hoosiers.

UT has a 6-3 lead and has held Indiana to a season-low in first-half points.

The Volunteers have made three trips in to the red zone, and despite making three trips inside the Indiana 20-yard line, Tennessee has just six points to show for its effort.

Kicker Brent Cimaglia has field goals of 32 and 23 yards respectively. Tennessee’s other trip deep into Hoosier territory ended when Indiana made a stop on fourth down.

Jarrett Garrantano had a late interception in the first half and that miscue led to a field goal by the Hoosiers’ Logan Justus on the final play of the first half.

Indiana will have a chance to take the lead after the break as the Hoosiers will get the ball to start the second half.

Exactly 24 hours after the Notre Dame football team kicks off in the Camping World Bowl, the men’s basketball team will return from a week-long holiday break by taking on Alabama A&M for the very first time at Purcell Pavilion. The Bulldogs are the first SWAC team to visit South Bend since Grambling in 2014.

The Irish enter their final nonconference game of the season having lost three of their past five contests, most recently a tough Crossroads Classic defeat to Indiana. Look for them to rely on their two-way play once again. John Mooney has been the leader there with nine double-doubles in 11 games, but Nate Laszewski is coming off the first double-double of his collegiate career, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds as a substitute in the Indiana loss.

The Irish have taken better care of the ball lately, averaging 7.5 rebounds over their past two games after coughing it up at least 10 times in five of their previous six. It’s progress, but a trend that will have to continue as the remainder of the ACC schedule awaits.

Big Ten, big ’20s: Indiana football

Indiana football in the 2020s

Given that Kalen DeBoer became the head coach at Fresno State, due to Jeff Tedford’s departure, a natural question facing the Indiana Hoosiers in the 2020s will focus on the ability of IU football to cultivate a high-level offense. That is a valid area of examination when looking at the big questions confronting the Hoosiers in the next decade.

Yet, the Hoosiers’ chops on offense are more a part of the larger question than the biggest question in itself. If one is to identify the biggest question staring the Hoosiers in the face as the 2020s begin, it’s more than just the offense. Indiana needs to show the Big Ten that it can beat the best teams in the league.

Indiana has played Michigan close several times in recent years — not 2019, but certainly in some of the years before that. Indiana has played Ohio State close in a number of first halves. Indiana has been known to be a pest to a number of upper-tier Big Ten teams, Penn State also as part of the mix.

Yet, while Indiana does bother a lot of the really good teams in the Big Ten, it hardly ever wins. If Indiana is ever going to rise to a higher level, or at least, if the Hoosiers ever want to get a realistic chance of raising their ceiling, they need to break through and notch a high-value win against one of the big boys in the Big Ten. More precisely, Indiana needs to beat one of those big boys when the big boy is at (or close to) the height of its powers.

Indiana’s 8-4 season in 2019 was certainly a productive and encouraging campaign. Indiana football fans would take a decade filled with 8-4 seasons. They would be justified in desiring that standard from their program; it would undeniably rate as a clear improvement.

That said, if Indiana ever wants to reach a higher level of achievement, it has to slay the dragon. Are the Hoosiers ever going to get to that point? The question looms over the program, and it’s going to be part of the story if IU football until the Hoosiers can change the equation. Indiana hasn’t made the Rose Bowl since the 1960s. Minnesota has shown it might snap a long Rose Bowl drought in the near future. Indiana has to be able to beat Michigan or Penn State to enter that same conversation.

Drawing a tough Indiana team in the annual Crossroads Classic, Notre Dame could have let itself get smoked. Instead, it hung in until the very end and nearly won it. However, it’s unlikely anyone on the team is thinking of this as anything but a 62-60 loss.

Notre Dame (8-4) turned a 17-point deficit into a five-point lead with 3:42 left. But Armaan Franklin made two 3-pointers after that, including one that gave Indiana (11-1) the lead with 15.7 seconds left. John Mooney missed a game-tying layup, and Rex Pflueger was unable to connect on a half-court shot at the buzzer.

Mooney tied for the team lead in scoring with Dane Goodwin for 15 points and had a double-double with 10 rebounds. Nate Laszewski met the bare minimum for a double-double with 10 points and 10 boards. Juwan Durham added 11 points.

Already ravaged by injuries to their rotation, the Irish momentarily suffered another blow when T.J. Gibbs went back to the locker room in the first half clutching his left leg. Though he returned before halftime, he appeared bothered by the leg while on the floor. Pfluger also was bitten by the injury bug with a sore groin before going back into the game a short time later.
