Indiana vs Ohio State Game Preview

Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers might be struggling way too much lately, but they were able to get Ohio State back in early January 67-51 despite not making anything from three – they were just 2-of-15.

But that’s what IU does.

This just isn’t a good three-point shooting team, and it’s not going to start against an Ohio State defense that’s clamping down hard on the outside.

It has to take advantage of every scoring opportunity. It has to keep the ball moving, win the rebounding battle, and not worry about giving up a whole slew of transition points.

Ohio State just doesn’t force steals, Indiana is decent on the inside defensively and is first overall in the Big Ten in field goal percentage D, and …

Why Ohio State Will Win

Yeah, Indiana just isn’t consistent enough scoring.

It needs this to be played in the low 60s and it can’t rely on hitting anything from the outside.

Even worse for what should be a low scoring game like this, Indiana isn’t great on the free throw line – it struggles to get anywhere close to 80%.

Ohio State might not force a ton of takeaways, but it doesn’t make mistakes and it’s sharp from the field. It might not do a ton from the outside, either, but it’ll be far more efficient offensively.

What’s Going To Happen

Don’t expect a whole lot of points, but that suits both teams just fine.

Ohio State will be too good at home, it’ll be far more effective from the field, and being just a little stronger from the free throw line will matter, too.

Indiana will get its chances, but it won’t be able to take full advantage of them.

Why Indiana Will Win

The Hoosiers are making a late run – at least they’re trying to.

After coming up with a tough win over a strong Iowa, they won in a double-overtime thriller against a bad Northwestern to set things up for a possible huge win over the Buckeyes – this game really, really matters.

They’re not shooting all that well, but they’re moving the ball around extremely well, they haven’t been bad defensively, and they’re coming up with clutch plays, at least over the last two games. The Buckeyes don’t force enough mistakes to bother the IU backcourt, but …

Why Ohio State Will Win

Ohio State is doing just about everything right.

It won its last five games and eight of the last nine by shooting well, hitting enough from three, and not screwing up. What’s the biggest difference between last year’s team and this one? Last season’s version couldn’t stop turning the ball over, and this one is among the best in the country at not giving it away.

The team is playing well, it’s getting on the boards, and it’s been able to clamp down well from three – six of the last nine teams haven’t been able to hit 30% from the outside.

What’s Going To Happen

Ohio State has its mojo working.

It’s a team looking and playing with extreme confidence, and with good reason. It’s coming up with the right plays through the last month and it’s been consistently strong.

Indiana will be feisty, and it’ll hit enough free throws to stay in the game late, but it’ll also turn the ball over the two extra times that Ohio State won’t.

Ohio State (11-4, 1-3) is in quite a rut. Once ranked as high as No. 2 in the country, the team comes in having lost to West Virginia, Wisconsin and Maryland. However, two of the three were ranked. In Tuesday’s game against No. 12 Maryland, the Buckeyes lost 67-55. Three players scored in double digits, with Kaleb Wesson leading the way with 15 points and nine rebounds. Andre Wesson and DJ Carton also had 14 points.

It’s been an up and down few weeks for Indiana (12-3, 2-2). Following three straight wins before Christmas, the Hoosiers lost 71-64 to Arkansas at home and then 75-59 on the road to Maryland. On Wednesday against Northwestern, who is just 5-9 on the season, the Hoosiers just squeaked by, winning 66-62. Indiana outscored Northwestern by seven points in the second half and had as big as a 10-point lead in the first half. The Hoosiers squandered that lead by committing 11 turnovers and went into halftime trailing by three. The Hoosiers were led by Trayce Jackson-Davis, who scored 21 points. Justin Smith also had 18 points, while Aljami Durham had 16 points.
