Could Indiana Pacers big man Jalen Smith be a good Chicago Bulls trade target?

We would be very enthusiastic for such a move, with Smith replicating much of the best parts of Nikola Vucevic’ game and little of the worst.

Could Indiana Pacers big man Jalen Smith be a good Chicago Bulls trade target? Smith has had himself a very good season with the Pacers in 2023-24, and could end up being the odd man out in Indiana given their overabundance of frontcourt players.

With UConn alum Andre Drummond a potential flight risk, Chicago could be in the market for a backup center. And Bleacher Report’s Zach Buckley thinks the Pacers combo big might be just the player the Bulls need to replace him if so. Smith has “he’s flashed the unique blend of shooting and shot-blocking” that made him an in-demand prospect before struggles at the NBA level nearly derailed his career.

“Beyond adding frontcourt depth, he’d check a few helpful boxes with his paint protection and ability to space the floor from the center spot,” writes the B/R league expert.

We would be very enthusiastic for such a move, with Smith replicating much of the best parts of Nikola Vucevic’ game and little of the worst.

There is still plenty of work to do to fix this roster, but if Chicago could pull such a swap off, it would help get that ball rolling for the Bulls.

Kristaps Porzingis’ Celtics injury might open the door to a closer Eastern Conference title race

The Knicks are definitely watching Kristaps Porzingis’ injury situation closely.

The Boston Celtics were comfortably the best team in NBA basketball during the regular season. After going up 3-1 on a shorthanded Miami Heat team in the first round, the Celtics should be glowing about being on the verge of advancing to the Eastern Conference Semifinals soon.

Instead, they’re holding their breath about center Kristaps Porzingis’s status.

During Game 4’s blowout win in Miami, Porzingis appeared to hurt his calf on a non-contact injury while handing the ball off to Jaylen Brown. It did not look good as the Boston center left the game to go to the locker room and didn’t return after playing just 14 minutes. ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski reported that Porzingis will undergo further testing on Tuesday but that early indications are that he didn’t suffer an Achilles injury.

That said, it does not nearly mean Porzingis or the Celtics are out of the woods:

Even if Porzingis avoided a disastrous season-ending injury, it does not seem like he’ll be back in the Boston lineup any time soon. If Porzingis is forced to miss any significant time, the Celtics are capable of winning and making a deep postseason run. Still, they are decidedly much more vulnerable without their starting big man, who was the team’s third-leading scorer, second-leading rebounder, and leader in blocks during the regular season.

You don’t just replace that kind of scoring, rebounding, and rim protection by playing hard and together with the players you still have available. These Celtics are more or less dependent on Porzingis taking pressure off of guys like Jayson Tatum, Brown, and Derrick White. He is too big of a piece to their title aspirations to simply wave off any possible extended absence.

All of this to say: Porzingis’ health status might open the door to a legitimate upset in the Eastern Conference title race, let alone the NBA championship.

Per oddsmakers with DraftKings, the Celtics are still heavily favored with -245 odds to win the East. Meanwhile, the tough New York Knicks come in second with +400 odds, while the young Indiana Pacers have the third-best odds at +1100. But those odds might not yet be accounting for Porzingis’ injury:

If I’m gonna be honest, I wouldn’t have entirely trusted the Celtics against a hard-nosed Knicks team, even with Porzingis in a potential Eastern Conference Finals matchup.

The Knicks are one of those teams that defends incredibly, has a real superstar in Jalen Brunson, and constantly makes all the little winning plays. They already had the capacity to beat a full-strength Celtics team. If that feasible matchup happens without Porzingis (just about three weeks from now), I’d be very comfortable betting on the Knicks’ chances of pulling off the upset.

If you’re looking for a good longshot bet to upset these seemingly vulnerable Celtics, the Pacers might not be a bad idea. (Especially since they appear likely to play the Knicks in the second round.) Tyrese Haliburton has grown up before our eyes in his first postseason, while Pascal Siakam and Myles Turner give Indiana the requisite size to abuse a Boston team that could be without its starting center.

The Celtics are likely to advance to the second round of the NBA playoffs for the sixth time in the last seven seasons. But if they don’t have Porzingis moving forward, it’ll be much harder to count on their run through the Eastern Conference lasting as long as they hope.

Tyrese Haliburton took a brutal shot at the Bucks’ playoff crowd after the Pacers tied the series

Tyrese Haliburton is so unimpressed by Bucks fans.

In a playoff series that has been relegated to NBA TV, it sure seems like the Milwaukee Bucks and Indiana Pacers are already getting very chippy with each other. And after Indiana tied the series on Tuesday night, star guard Tyrese Haliburton added more fuel to the fire as both teams now shift to Indianapolis for the next two games.

While talking about how excited he is to play in front of a Pacers’ playoff crowd, Haliburton proclaimed that the Milwaukee home postseason crowd has been weaker through two games than a standard Indiana regular-season game.

Oh, man. What a brutal parting shot to Bucks fans after tying the series:

There’s bulletin board material; then there’s throwing a canister of gas on a roaring flame. Haliburton probably just did the latter. I cannot wait for Game 3 of this series on Friday night. Get your popcorn ready, folks.

Full injury report for Friday’s Thunder vs. Pacers matchup

Full injury report for Friday’s Thunder vs. Pacers matchup.

The Oklahoma City Thunder continue their season-high five-game road trip when they face the Indiana Pacers on Friday. It’s the second matchup of the season between both squads.

The Thunder (52-24) hope to avoid their first three-game losing skid of the season. They’ll likely have to do it without their top two players for the third straight game.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander (quad contusion) is out. Jalen Williams (ankle sprain) is doubtful. Ousmane Dieng, Keyontae Johnson, Olivier Sarr and Adam Flagler are on assignment in the G League and are out.

Meanwhile, the Pacers (43-34) could be without their starting center. Myles Turner (finger sprain) is questionable. Bennedict Mathurin (labral tear) is also out.

Oscar Tshiebwe, Isaiah Wong and Quenton Jackson are questionable. They have been on assignment in the G League, but the season ended on Tuesday for Indiana’s G League team.

The Thunder lost a grueling back-to-back capped by a 35-point loss to the Boston Celtics on Wednesday.

In their last outing, the Pacers lost to the Brooklyn Nets on Wednesday. Indiana hopes to avoid the play-in tournament.

Tip off from Indiana is set for 6 p.m. CT.

Nets’ Noah Clowney details what he brings to the team moving forward

After Wednesday’s 115-111 win over the Indiana Pacers, Brooklyn Nets rookie Noah Clowney outlined what he brings to the Nets moving forward.

NEW YORK — Brooklyn Nets rookie Noah Clowney has been one of the more-talked about players on the team due to the flashes the fanbase has seen from him throughout this season. After showing us glimpses of what he can do with enough playing time, Clowney did more than just teasing his ability.

“I think there’s a lot,” Clowney said after Wednesday’s 115-111 win over the Indiana Pacers. The Nets came into the game knowing that they had to beat the Pacers to keep their hopes of a play-in tournament berth alive and Clowney took that to heart by putting up 22 points (7-of-9 from the field, 3-of-4 from three-point land) and 10 rebounds in just 17 minutes off the bench.

“I think I can guard,” Clowney said when asked what he can contribute to the Nets as the team moves forward. “I think I can guard. And, I think I can get better at that. I can space the floor. And, then I think next year I’m going to have a lot more I can bring to a team, even more than I do now.”

As Nets PR pointed out, not only did Clowney notch the first double-double of his young career, but he is also the youngest player in NBA history to put up 20 points and 10 rebounds in a game while playing 17 minutes or less minutes. So, it’s clear that Clowney has come a long way from where he was to begin this season and he’s still just 19 years old.

“That was like the two essentials, the two must-haves,” Clowney said as he continued explaining what he has been working on since he came into the NBA. “Rebounding and just the ability to play the right way, make winning plays.”

Pacers center Oscar Tshiebwe named G League Rookie of the Year

Pacers rookie Oscar Tshiebwe led the G League in rebounding and finished second in double-doubles (28).

Indiana Pacers rookie Oscar Tshiebwe on Tuesday was named the G League Rookie of the Year for his play with the Indiana Mad Ants, the league announced.

Tshiebwe, who is signed to a two-way contract, averaged 15.9 points, 15.8 rebounds and 1.7 assists on 57.3% shooting from the field in 34 games with the Mad Ants, who were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs on Tuesday.

The undrafted center from Kentucky led the G League in rebounding and finished second in double-doubles (28). He registered six games with at least 20 points and 20 rebounds and was one of seven players to reach that mark in a game.

Tshiebwe set the franchise single-game rebounding record with 28 on Nov. 22 in a win over the Motor City Cruise. He also set the single-season record for rebounds by recording 26 points and 26 rebounds in a win over the Long Island Nets on March 21.

The 24-year-old became the second Mad Ants player to win the award, joining Tony Mitchell (2012-13). He edged Los Angeles Clippers guard Jordan Miller and Philadelphia 76ers guard Ricky Council IV in the voting by head coaches and general managers.

Tshiebwe established himself as a dominant player in the paint in college, and continued to show that ability and more this year with the Mad Ants after winning G League Rookie of the Year.

Nets full injury report for Wednesday’s tilt against the Pacers

Here is the full injury report for the Brooklyn Nets heading into their matchup on Wednesday against the Indiana Pacers.

The Brooklyn Nets are trying to finish this season strong with the hopes that they will be rewarded with a trip to the Eastern Conference play-in tournament. With a matchup coming against the Indiana Pacers on Wednesday, one that could extend their play-in hopes if they win, Brooklyn could be getting back some reinforcements.

In the Nets’ injury report for Wednesday’s matchup against the Pacers, two players who are key pieces of Brooklyn’s rotation have varying levels of odds to come back to the lineup. Forward Cam Johnson (left big toe sprain) is listed as probable while guard Dennis Smith Jr. (right hip synovitis) is listed as questionable.

Johnson and Smith missed Monday’s 133-111 loss at Indiana with their respective injuries, but it should be noted that the reason for Johnson’s absence was due to injury maintenance. It seems that Johnson is able to play through his injury, but that the toe is still bothering him to the point where he may need to miss a game occasionally.

Smith has been dealing with some soreness in his right hip and that was the reason that he wasn’t able to play on Monday. Given his questionable designation, Smith could be more unlikely than not to play on Wednesday, but that would depend on how he feels when Wednesday comes around.
