Indiana at Ohio State: Three things to know

  1. This is the only regular-season meeting between the Big Ten rivals. They split two games a year ago with the home team holding court. Ohio State won 68-59 as a 7-point favorite last February, and Indiana claimed a 66-54 victory as a 2.5-point underdog a month earlier. Over the last 10 head-to-head contests, the Buckeyes are 6-4 straight up and 5-5 ATS.
  2. Indiana needed double overtime to get past Northwestern 79-76 Wednesday, pushing as a 3-point road favorite in its last game. The win followed IU’s 67-65 Sunday upset of then-No. 8 Iowa as a 3.5-point home underdog to complete a season sweep of the Hawkeyes. Sophomore F Trayce Jackson-Davis leads the Hoosiers with team highs in points (19.4 per game), rebounds (9.4 RPG) and blocks (1.7 BPG).
  3. Ohio State is the hottest team in the conference, winners of five straight, and eight of nine with three covers in a row. The Buckeyes’ most recent win was a 73-65 road cover at Maryland Monday as 3-point favorites. Their previous W was an 89-85 upset at Iowa as 5-point underdogs Feb. 4. Sophomore F E.J. Liddell leads the Buckeyes in scoring (14.9 PPG), rebounds (6.8 RPG) and blocks (1.3 BPG).

Indiana at Ohio State: Odds, lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Ohio State 78, Indiana 64

Money line (ML)

The Buckeyes could have this won by halftime, but I will never suggest a -350 money line bet in a college hoops game. This is a PASS.

Play our new free daily Pick’em Challenge and win! Play now!

Against the spread (ATS)

OHIO STATE -7.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1½ times your usual wager. The Buckeyes are the much better team. Not having played since Monday, I expect a well-rested OSU squad to jump out early and cruise to a victory.

The Hoosiers’ starting backcourt can’t shoot. Sophomore G Armaan Franklin is OK, hitting 43.9% of his field-goal attempts, but senior G Aljami Durham and junior G Rob Phinisee are shooting 37.7% and 36.9% from the field, respectively.

ATS: Indiana 11-7-1 | Ohio State 12-7-1

Over/Under (O/U)

OVER 139.5 (-110) is worth a HALF-UNIT wager. Ohio State averages 76.4 PPG in conference games, while Indiana allows 73.3 PPG.

On the flipside, OSU surrenders 69.8 PPG in Big Ten play, while IU scores 72.6 PPG.

If Ohio State puts this away by halftime as predicted, the second half will consist of numerous garbage points with the game already decided.

O/U records: Indiana 10-9 | Ohio State 12-8

Indiana at Ohio State: Three things to know

  1. Not only did the Hoosiers win at Michigan State last week, they shut out the Spartans 24-0 as 7.5-point dogs. They also have wins vs. Penn State and Michigan this season as they have their highest ranking since Nov. 27, 1967. As a matter of fact, Saturday will be Indiana’s first top-10 matchup in program history with both teams in the top 10. QB Michael Penix Jr. has thrown for 1,070 yards and 9 touchdowns against 3 interceptions, while RB Stevie Scott III (319 rushing yards, 5 TDs) is IU’s top back and WR Ty Fryfogle (424 receiving yards, 4 TDs) is the top receiver.
  2. Ohio State had last week off after its road game was canceled due to a COVID-19 outbreak in the Maryland program. QB Justin Fields has thrown for 908 yards and has as many TDs (11) as incompletions – the Heisman Trophy candidate is 72-for-83 passing. Plus, he has no interceptions. Five different players have caught TDs, led by WR Chris Olave (4 TDs, 288 receiving yards) and Garrett Wilson (2, 344). RB Master Teague III is the top back with 211 rushing yards and 4 TDs.
  3. Ohio State has won the last 25 head-to-head contests and is 26-0-1 in the last 27 meetings. The Hoosiers’ last win in the series came in 1988. Fields threw for 199 yards and 3 TDs in a 51-10 rout last season at Bloomington. The Buckeyes outgained the Hoosiers 520-257 yards, including a 306-42 advantage on the ground – Teague rushed for 106 yards on 10 carries.

Indiana at Ohio State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Ohio State 49, Indiana 17

Money line (ML)

PASS. The Buckeyes’ -910 price is way too expensive. They’re going to win, but it’s just not smart gambling.

Against the spread (ATS)

OHIO STATE -20.5 (-110) is the STRONGEST PLAY – 1.5 times your usual wager. The Hoosiers are 4-0 in the Big Ten for the first time since 1987 – they’re also 4-0 ATS this season – but reality sets in Saturday.

Several touts are advising to take the Hoosiers +20.5 (-110), but did they close the 41-point gap from last year’s blowout? Victories vs. PSU (0-4) and Michigan (1-3) are nice, but those two teams aren’t what they used to be. They haven’t played a good team yet – the other wins are against MSU (1-3) and Rutgers (0-4).

Over/Under (O/U)

AVOID the O/U of 66.5. It’s just a bit high. The Buckeyes, 1-1-1 vs. the O/U, average 46.3 points per game to rank fourth in the country, while allowing 23.0 PPG. The Hoosiers are 3-1 O/U, averaging 33.8 PPG and yielding 19.3 PPG to rank 17th in the country.
