Don’t count Seahawks tight end Luke Willson out against the Vikings

Tight end Luke Willson hasn’t suited up for the Seattle Seahawks in several weeks, but he could be available against the Vikings Week 13.

A hamstring injury has sidelined tight end Luke Willson for a number of weeks, but that might be coming to an end shortly. The Seattle Seahawks and coach Pete Carroll will welcome the tight end depth.

The entire time Willson has been out of the competition, coach Carroll’s message has continued to be the same . . . always some form of “never count Willson out from returning.”

That is a testament to the toughness of Willson, which is something he showed during the Week 9 win against the Buccaneers when he played hurt.

Approaching Week 13 against the Vikings, Willson is going to do everything he can to get back on the field.

“He’s going to try to prove that he can play this week, so we’ll see how that goes,” Carroll said Wednesday. “Trainers are trying to hold him back from going too far too soon. That’s how Luke does it. Luke has been remarkable over the years. I wouldn’t count him out.”

There it is again. Don’t count Willson out.

Willson isn’t a big part of the offense in terms of targets, but what he does provide is a consistent blocking presence from the position. And, as coach Carroll makes apparent, toughness.

If it were up to him, Willson would’ve already returned from injury. Since it’s not, each week is a guessing game. As it seems, the return just might be coming on Monday against the Vikings.

Saints starting Patrick Omameh at left tackle in relief of Terron Armstead

The New Orleans Saints went with veteran NFL guard Patrick Omameh to start at left tackle in relief of injured All-Pro Terron Armstead.

The New Orleans Saints had a tough decision to make at left tackle, with injured starter Terron Armstead inactive after suffering a high-ankle sprain a week ago. His top backup, left guard Andrus Peat, was also inactive after having his broken arm surgically repaired a few weeks ago (veteran backup Nick Easton will get his third start in Peat’s place). The Atlanta Falcons sacked Saints quarterback Drew Brees six times in their first meeting with Armstead and Peat both in the lineup, so the Saints obviously hope to turn in a better performance despite having to start multiple backups.

New Orleans had two options available between veteran guard Patrick Omameh and undrafted rookie Ethan Greenidge; facing that decision, the Saints went with the player who has the most NFL experience. Omameh has started full seasons in the NFL for several different teams at both left and right guard, but this game will be his first long-exposure look at left tackle.

Greenidge is active for the first time this year, and he figures to get on the field occasionally as a top reserve along with backup guard/center Will Clapp. Greenidge started 40-plus games in college at Villanova, largely at left tackle, so he does offer some experience in that role even if it’s been limited to the college game.

If worst comes to worst and the Falcons defensive front overruns all options (or, knock on wood, another injury strikes) the Saints can always call on all-star right tackle Ryan Ramczyk to flip back to his college position on the left side. But doing so would require someone else to step into Ramczyk’s spot, which would only introduce new problems and more instability across the board. It’s why the Saints gave Omameh the start and activated Greenidge. Here’s hoping the Saints can have this game well in hand soon enough that they don’t have to consider it.

Falcons vs. Saints inactive players: Julio Jones out, Marshon Lattimore in

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons published their inactive lists, with WR Julio Jones ruled out while CB Marshon Lattimore returns.

The New Orleans Saints and Atlanta Falcons published their official list of inactive players for Thursday night’s kickoff, which headlines the NFL’s slate of Thanksgiving games. And the game’s most notable omission is Falcons all-star wide receiver Julio Jones, who was ruled out for this game with a shoulder injury after being listed as questionable to play on the official injury report.

However, the Saints will be seeing the return the cornerback Marshon Lattimore and returns specialist Deonte Harris, who missed the last two games with hamstring injuries. Those are two huge additions to the defensive secondary and special teams return units, though New Orleans still has to work around the absence of starting left tackle Terron Armstead (high-ankle sprain) and left guard Andrus Peat (broken arm).

Here’s the full list of Saints and Falcons players who will be watching this one from the sidelines:

From the Saints

  • FB Zach Line
  • OT Terron Armstead
  • OG Andrus Peat
  • TE Dan Arnold
  • DE Carl Granderson
  • CB Patrick Robinson
  • FS Saquan Hampton

From the Falcons

  • DE John Cominsky
  • OT Matt Gono
  • TE Austin Hooper
  • WR Brandon Powell
  • DT Deadrin Senat
  • TE Luke Stocker

Ziggy Ansah finally finds his footing in the Seahawks defense

With Jadeveon Clowney inactive, Seattle Seahawks defensive end Ziggy Ansah made the most of his opportunities in Philadelphia Week 12.

Defensive end Ziggy Ansah has been waiting for his breakout game with the Seattle Seahawks and he got it Week 12 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

With fellow defensive end Jadveon Clowney inactive with a hip injury, Ansah made the most of his opportunities on Sunday.

“You would have wondered, how are we going to have a pass rush without J.D. after what he did last week?” Carroll said during his post-game press conference. “And we did. We did. So we have taken a new step forward and we’re getting better. And this is really, really important for this stretch run, that the defense can start playing like this. The last two weeks have been really good days for our defense and that’s really important. It ain’t how you start. We got a chance to finish with a really good performance from these guys and it’s going to be necessary.”

Against the Eagles in Philadelphia, Ansah posted an impressive stat line of four tackles, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hits, two tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble.

“He’s the strongest he’s been, he’s the heaviest he’s been right now, he’s been working really hard alongside and beyond what the other guys are doing to make sure that he’s getting better as the season comes down to the stretch here,” Carroll continued. “And I’m really proud of him for understanding that you can keep getting better during the season and he has and maybe that’s why we see him as active today.”

Although Carroll is optimistic Clowney should be available next week, if Ansah is able to continue this level of production, the Seahawks have a real chance of seeing the playoffs again this season.

Pete Carroll optimistic Jadeveon Clowney will play next Monday night

Following a hip procedure in Philadelphia, the Seahawks are hopeful defensive end Jadeveon Clowney can play Week 13 against Minnesota.

The Seattle Seahawks were without one of the key members of their defense Sunday against the Eagles as defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was inactive and watched from the sidelines.

Clowney has been battling a sore hip and underwent a procedure with a specialist in Philadelphia ahead of the Seahawks matchup.

Coach Pete Carroll is hoping Clowney will be available next week when Seattle squares off against the Vikings for “Monday Night Football.”

“I would think, I – I’m optimistically, I think so,” Carroll said after the win. “Yeah. He had some stuff that he had to go through here and it just set him back a little bit because of the treatments, they were going to set him back a couple days. And it could have and it did.

“So he should likely be coming out of that and we’re hopeful he’ll be better off by the week next week.”

With Clowney out, Ziggy Ansah stepped up big time for the Seahawks, logging four tackles, 1.5 sacks, two quarterback hits, two tackles for a loss, and a forced fumble.

Saints inactive report: Marshon Lattimore officially out vs. Panthers

The New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers released their official inactive lists before their Week 12 kickoff, with Marshon Lattimore out

The New Orleans Saints and Carolina Panthers are both dealing with injuries across the board, and it forced them to rule out some key players for Sunday’s game from the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. New Orleans will be without multiple starters including left guard Andrus Peat (broken arm), returns specialist Deonte Harris (hamstring), fullback Zach Line (knee), and now, cornerback Marshon Lattimore (hamstring).

Friday’s official Saints injury report listed Lattimore as questionable to play, but the team decided to rest him another week after testing his hamstring in pregame warmups. With another game in just four days against wide receiver Julio Jones and the Atlanta Falcons, it makes sense to let Lattimore’s body fully recover before giving him the green light.

NFL rules stipulate that just 46 of the 53 players on the roster may be active on game days. Here’s which players will be joining their injured teammates on the sidelines for Week 12:

From the Saints

  • OL Andrus Peat
  • CB Marshon Lattimore
  • WR Deonte Harris
  • FB Zach Line
  • OL Ethan Greenidge
  • TE Dan Arnold
  • DE Carl Granderson

From the Panthers

  • CB Ross Cockrell
  • CB Corn Elder
  • DE Wes Horton
  • RB Mike Davis
  • DE Marquis Haynes
  • LB Jordan Kunaszyk
  • WR Brandon Zylstra

Reports: Marshon Lattimore not expected to play vs. Panthers

The New Orleans Saints will be without starting cornerback Marshon Lattimore in their Week 12 game with the Carolina Panthers, per reports.

The New Orleans Saints injury report listed star cornerback Marshon Lattimore as questionable to play in Sunday’s game with the Carolina Panthers, but NFL Network reports now suggest Lattimore will be sidelined another week while managing a hamstring injury.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported early Sunday morning that Lattimore was not expected to play against the Panthers, but he could return on the following Thursday for the Thanksgiving headliner with the Atlanta Falcons. Tiffany Blackmon, also reporting from NFL Network, was assigned to cover the Saints-Panthers game from the sidelines and later added that Lattimore will not suit up.

While the Saints probably wanted to get a look how Lattimore’s hamstring responds during pregame warmups, it makes sense to let him rest until Thursday’s kickoff. Starting nickel corner P.J. Williams held his own while filling in for Lattimore a week ago against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and he should have another opportunity to put up good game film against Carolina’s lackluster receiving corps.

With Williams on one side, Eli Apple on the other, and rookie C.J. Gardner-Johnson in the slot, the Saints are enjoying rare depth in the secondary. They’ll have tough decisions to make in the spring when Williams, Apple, and starting strong safety Vonn Bell each test unrestricted free agency.

We’ll know for sure whether Lattimore is playing today when the Saints release their inactive report later Sunday morning. So keep an eye out for official confirmation from the team.

New Orleans Saints inactive report for Week 11 at Buccaneers

The New Orleans Saints and Tampa Bay Buccaneers reported their inactive players for Week 11, including Deonte Harris and Marshon Lattimore.

[jwplayer sXmBDaQ3]

The New Orleans Saints are going to be without multiple key players during their game with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, with starters like Marshon Lattimore (hamstring) and Andrus Peat (broken arm) preemptively ruled out for Sunday on the final injury report. Rookie returns specialist Deonte Harris (also managing a hamstring issue) joined them. This could be the first look fans have at free agent guard Nick Easton, who signed a four-year, $22.5 million contract in the offseason but has only played a handful of special teams snaps this year behind Peat and backup Will Clapp.

However, the Buccaneers are also banged up. They cut their leader in snaps played at cornerback (Vernon Hargreaves III) earlier this week, and they’ll also have to sit their third corner, M.J. Stewart, who is battling a knee injury. The cornerback ranked second on the depth chart behind Hargreaves, Carlton Davis, was listed as questionable to play but Buccaneers coach Bruce Arians said will suit up. Tampa Bay is also without two outside linebackers in Anthony Nelson and Carl Nassib.

Here’s the full list of players who are inactive for this game:

From the Saints

  • CB Marshon Lattimore
  • OL Andrus Peat
  • WR Deonte Harris
  • DE Carl Granderson
  • OL Ethan Greenidge
  • TE Dan Arnold
  • WR Austin Carr
