A look at Seahawks’ injuries ahead of divisional round in Green Bay

The Seattle Seahawks hope to see the return of a few injured players in time for the divisional round matchup against the Green Bay Packers.

The Seattle Seahawks were able to get by the Philadelphia Eagles and advance to the divisional round of the playoffs despite a number of players battling injuries.

“All in all, we came out pretty clean of the game – pretty healthy,” Coach Pete Carroll told reporters Monday. “Still don’t know about a couple guys. Don’t know about Ziggy [Ansah] right now at this point. Don’t know about the guys that missed the game going forward to this week. I can’t tell you much about those guys until we get into this week, but I’m sure you’ll ask. Going to Green Bay. Here we go.”

Besides Ansah (stinger), Carroll did provide a number of other updates on players who will be monitored this week.

Guard Mike Iupati (neck): “He had a few episodes the week before,” Carroll explained. “Just didn’t quiet down in time. It has quieted down when he’s had the episodes in the past. He’s still symptomatic today. I can’t tell you what’s going to happen this week.”

Tackle Duane Brown (knee/biceps): “I can’t tell you until we get him back out here,” Carroll said. “He’s doing some stuff with the guys right now. I don’t have any updated information for you. We’re trying to see if he can get back.”

Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney (core): “So far, he’s okay,” Carroll confirmed. “It sounds like, the report I just got is that he’s playing this week. He’ll be alright to make it. We’ll have to manage him throughout the week.”

The Seahawks have an off day Tuesday but return Wednesday to prepare to face the Packers.

Eric Kendricks suits up for wild-card round on Saints vs. Vikings inactive report

The New Orleans Saints injury report preemptively ruled out Eli Apple and Zach Line for their wild-card round game vs. the Minnesota Vikings

[jwplayer MgrvgHyE-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints and Minnesota Vikings published their official inactive lists before Sunday’s wild-card round game, and it doesn’t carry many surprises. Several players were preemptively ruled out on Friday’s injury report while managing various issues — that group includes starting Saints cornerback Eli Apple and fullback Zach Line, as well as Vikings nickel cornerback Mackensie Alexander.

New Orleans was without both Apple and Line a week ago, and their fill-in replacements played well. Veteran cornerback Janoris Jenkins closed out the regular season with a timely interception, while former Saints practice squad call-up Ricky Ortiz threw some key blocks and caught a pass or two in Line’s absence.

It’s less clear how Minnesota will adapt, because neither Alexander nor his backup (slot specialist and punt returner Mike Hughes, who is on injured reserve) will play. While both of the Vikings’ starting cornerbacks are active, they could have to press a safety into slot coverage or rush returns specialist Marcus Sherels into the role. Considering Sherels only played a combined 74 defensive snaps from 2014 to 2018, it’s unlikely the Vikings take that option.

One path they could consider is shifting linebacker Eric Kendricks into the slot when the matchup works favorably — such as when the Saints position a tight end or running back into the alignment. Kendricks is widely considered to be one of the NFL’s best coverage linebackers, though he was slowed down with a quadriceps injury in recent practices. He’s also been picked on by Alvin Kamara in the past. But Minnesota might not have better choices.

With all that said: here are your official inactive reports from both the Saints and Vikings:

From the Saints

  • CB Eli Apple (ankle injury)
  • FB Zach Line (knee injury)
  • OL Will Clapp
  • OL Ethan Greenidge
  • LB Manti Te’o
  • DE Noah Spence
  • DB D.J. Swearinger

From the Vikings

  • CB Mackensie Alexander (knee injury)
  • WR Laquon Treadwell
  • DL Hercules Mata’afa
  • DL Eddie Yarbrough
  • OL Dru Samia
  • OL Oli Udoh
  • OL Aviante Collins

Seahawks still saddled by injuries to defensive starters

The Seattle Seahawks lost two running backs Week 16, but it’s been the defensive side of the ball that has been most impacted by injuries.

The Seattle Seahawks were dealt a number of hard blows in their Week-16 loss to the Arizona Cardinals, including potential season-ending injuries to running backs, Chris Carson and C.J. Prosise.

But until Sunday, it was mostly the defensive side of the ball with the most health concerns. Defensive end Jadeveon Clowney was inactive for his second-straight game with core troubles and cornerback Shaquill Griffin has been sidelined in as many matchups with a hamstring injury.

“Both those guys were not right, they couldn’t make it back,” coach Pete Carroll said after the loss. “They both tried, and they weren’t right and they couldn’t pass the tests with the trainers. So, it wasn’t even a tough call when we got down to it. We held out hope that maybe they could turn a corner, but neither one of them did.”

Clowney and Griffin aren’t the only defenders battling injuries, Quandre Digss is still out with a high-ankle sprain and linebacker Mychal Kendricks and defensive end Ziggy Ansah only finally returned to the action Sunday afternoon.

“It’s interesting that a few of our guys – sometimes earlier in the season you get to the end of the week and they can make it back,” Carroll continued. “Here, these guys didn’t in this case. So, we’ll just see how that goes next week.”

Carroll did say that both Griffin and Kendricks would return to practice on Tuesday.

The Seahawks will need every healthy available player when they face off against the 49ers for the division crown Week 17.

Seahawks left tackle Duane Brown to undergo knee surgery Monday

Inactive Week 16 against the Arizona Cardinals, Seattle Seahawks left tackle Duane Brown will undergo knee surgery on Monday.

The Seattle Seahawks have been absolutely decimated by injuries over the last few weeks, mostly on the defensive side of the ball. However, that all changed on Sunday with the loss of two running backs and an offensive lineman – potentially for the remainder of the season.

Running backs Chris Carson and C.J. Prosise both left the Week 16 contest against the Cardinals and will likely not return this year. Carson suffered a hip injury and Prosise left the matchup after breaking his arm.

The final hit came after the game when coach Pete Carroll announced left tackle Duane Brown would undergo knee surgery on Monday. Brown was inactive for Seattle’s loss to Arizona.

“He needs to get his knee fixed,” Carroll said after the game. “He tried like crazy to get through it this week just couldn’t. He did everything during the week and couldn’t get it to quiet down. He just needs to get his knee cleaned up.”

Carroll did note that the procedure is not considered a major surgery and Brown does have a chance to return this season. However, Brown will likely be up against the clock to get back in time as Seattle continues its run at the playoffs.

Saints vs. Titans inactive report: Derrick Henry out, Janoris Jenkins active

The New Orleans Saints will activate CB Janoris Jenkins for their Week 16 game with the Tennessee Titans, who are without RB Derrick Henry.

The New Orleans Saints and Tennessee Titans published their inactive reports ahead of Sunday’s game, and it features a few curve balls. While several players were expected to miss this game with injuries and were preemptively ruled out on Friday’s injury report — such as linebacker Kiko Alonso, strong safety Vonn Bell, and right guard Larry Warford for New Orleans, and Tennessee cornerback Adoree’ Jackson and slot receiver Adam Humphries — others were surprising picks to sit out Week 16.

Derrick Henry will not play for the Titans after suffering a hamstring injury, which limited his participation in practice throughout the week. That’s a huge loss considering how heavy a load he carries for the Titans running game, and the offense in general; he leads all Titans in yards gained from scrimmage (1,535) and total touchdowns scored (15). It’s going to be interesting to see how ex-backup quarterback Ryan Tannehill adjusts without having Henry to lean on.

For the Saints, this game could give fans their first look at recently-signed cornerback Janoris Jenkins. Jenkins was claimed on waivers from the New York Giants earlier this week. With number-two Saints cornerback Eli Apple playing poorly in recent weeks, there’s a chance Jenkins gets on the field at some point. If nothing else, he’ll be dressed and ready to go.

Report: Derrick Henry not expected to suit up vs. Saints

The New Orleans Saints will not have to face dangerous Tennessee Titans running back Derrick Henry, who is battling a hamstring injury.

The New Orleans Saints caught a big break ahead of Sunday’s game with the Tennessee Titans: star Titans running back Derrick Henry is not expected to suit up against New Orleans while dealing with a hamstring injury, per a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Henry’s availability in practice was limited throughout the week; after Saturday’s walkthrough practice session, the Titans downgraded his game status to questionable. Now, it appears he won’t play at all.

It’s a huge blow for Tennessee, because Henry has essentially been their entire running attack for much of the 2019 season. He’s accounted for 271 of the Titans’ combined 380 rushing attempts, and 87.1% of their rushing attempts by running backs. Backup Dion Lewis (38 carries for 134 yards) and practice squad call-up Dalyn Dawkins (2 attempts for 2 yards) are the only other Titans running backs to have gotten on the field this season.

Henry’s absence will also be felt in the passing game. While he’s only recorded 18 catches on 24 targets this season, he ranks seventh on the team in receiving yards (206), at 11.4 yards per reception. His total 1,535 yards from scrimmage leads the team, and his 15 combined touchdown scores is more than double the next-best Titans skills position player (rookie wideout A.J. Brown, who has caught seven scoring passes).

Due to the results of Saturday’s games in the NFL triple-header (in which the Houston Texans won the AFC South by beating the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, and the New England Patriots pushed the Buffalo Bills down to a wild card spot) today’s game has no impact on the Titans’ playoff standings. Tennessee needs the Pittsburgh Steelers to lose at least one of their next two games (either on Sunday against the New York Jets, or next week with the Baltimore Ravens) to get back into the playoff picture. The Titans do not control their own destiny anymore, and that could have factored into the decision to rest a player as important as Henry. If their season is functionally over, why risk serious injury for two essentially-meaningless regular season games?

Defensive ends Jadeveon Clowney, Ziggy Ansah uncertain for Sunday

The Seattle Seahawks could be down a couple of defenders against the Cardinals if Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah are unable to play.

The Seattle Seahawks could be down a couple of defensive ends Sunday against the Arizona Cardinals if Jadeveon Clowney and Ziggy Ansah are unable to return from injuries. Both players were inactive Week 15 against the Carolina Panthers.

Clowney has been battling a sports hernia (core) issue over the last few weeks of the season. Opting not to undergo surgery at this point, he’s been pushing through the pain. But last week, Clowney was also sidelined by the flu, unable to even travel with the team.

As for Ansah, he’s still been fighting a neck injury.

Coach Pete Caroll did say both defenders would get some practice in starting Wednesday, however.

“I can’t tell you, that I don’t know,” Carroll responded when asked if Clowney and Ansah would be ready to suit up Week 16. “We’ve got to get through the week and see what happens. They are both going to get work today and we’ll just see how we progress and see if it’s right for those guys to play.

“I’m hoping – we’d love to get get them both back, but I can’t tell you right now.”

Ansah and Clowney have a number of days to prove they are ready to roll before the final injury report of the week comes out on Friday.

Saints inactive report for Monday Night Football vs. Colts

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts posted their inactive reports for their Monday Night Football game with T.Y. Hilton gearing up

[jwplayer A1HDGD64-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints and Indianapolis Colts published their official inactive reports ahead of their Monday Night Football kickoff, with a few key players on both teams forced to sit this one out.

For New Orleans, they’ll be without several starters while they work to return from various injuries. Left guard Andrus Peat (arm), middle linebacker Kiko Alonso (thigh), and strong safety Vonn Bell (knee) were each preemptively ruled out on the Saints injury report.

On the other sideline, the only mainstay the Colts will be without is cornerback Kenny Moore; all-star wide receiver T.Y. Hilton is making his return from a calf injury that has held him out the last two weeks, though he still isn’t quite back to his old self. Starting cornerback Pierere Desir is also returning from an injury that has limited his availability.

Here is the full list of players who will be watching this game in sweatpants. NFL rules stipulate that only 46 of the 53 players on the active roster may suit up on game days, so teams have to be very strategic in deciding who doesn’t dress out.

From the Saints

  • OL Andrus Peat
  • LB Kiko Alonso
  • S Vonn Bell
  • CB Patrick Robinson
  • OL Ethan Greenidge
  • OL Michael Ola
  • DE Noah Spence

Week 14 snap counts and playtime percentages: Seahawks at Rams

Complete Week 14 snap counts and playtime percentages from the Seattle Seahawks’ loss to the Los Angeles Rams in primetime.

The Seahawks suffered a tough divisional loss to the Los Angeles Rams Sunday night on the national stage to yield the NFC West lead back to the San Francisco 49ers. Seattle also realized its first road defeat of the year.

With a few players battling injuries – including defensive end Ziggy Ansah, who was inactive for the matchup – some adjustments had to be made.

“We made our efforts, we made – the things that we do to get us back in it, we had couple great picks and a great touchdown by (Quandre Diggs) and we blocked the field goal too,” coach Pete Carroll said postgame. “We did the kinds of things that we needed to do, but we needed a couple plays on the other side to go ahead take advantage of it, and we weren’t able to find it. So a difficult night. And you got to hand it to them. They played great.”

Here’s a look at the snap counts and playtime percentages for both the Seahawks and the Rams Week 14.

Terron Armstead and Manti Te’o active for Saints vs. 49ers

The New Orleans Saints will start Terron Armstead at left tackle against the San Francisco 49ers, leaving him off of their inactive report.

[jwplayer FgrNrsL9-ThvAeFxT]

The New Orleans Saints will welcome all-star left tackle Terron Armstead back into the lineup during Sunday’s game with the San Francisco 49ers; this comes after he was left off of the Saints inactive report, signalling his return. Armstead had missed the last two games with a high-ankle sprain but is gutting through it to take his spot along the New Orleans offense line.

Four Saints players were ruled out for this kickoff on Friday’s final injury report, including two starting linebackers (Kiko Alonso and A.J. Klein) as well as the player who normally lines up next to Armstead at left guard (Andrus Peat). The Saints will also be without fullback Zach Line again as he continues to recover from a knee injury. Veteran linebacker Manti Te’o will play his first game in a year since being signed off the street on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, San Francisco is getting healthier. They’re adding leading rusher Matt Breida to a loaded running back corps after he missed time with an injury, while starting safety Jaquiski Tartt and backup defensive tackle Julian Taylor were preemptively ruled out. Top defensive tackle Arik Armstead caused a stir when he left a 49ers practice session earlier this week, but that absence was designated as a veteran’s rest day. Expect him to test the Saints’ Armstead and fill-in left guard Nick Easton early and often on Sunday.

Here is the full list of inactive players who will be watching this one from the sidelines:

From the Saints

  • OL Andrus Peat
  • FB Zach Line
  • LB Kiko Alonso
  • LB A.J. Klein
  • CB Patrick Robinson
  • OL Will Clapp
  • FS Saquan Hampton

From the 49ers

  • S Jaquiski Tartt
  • DT Julian Taylor
  • WR Dante Pettis
  • WR Marquise Goodwin
  • QB C.J. Beathard
