The No. 21 Illinois Fighting Illini (4-0, 1-0 Big Ten) visit the 8th-ranked Penn State Nittany Lions (3-0, 0-0) Saturday for a Big Ten showdown. Kickoff from Beaver Stadium is set for 7:30 p.m. ET (NBC). Let’s analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s college football odds around the Illinois vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college football picks and predictions.

Illinois picked up a 31-24 OT win at the Nebraska Cornhuskers Sept. 20, covering as a 9.5-point underdog. The Illini trailed 24-17 early in the 4th but tied it with 10:36 to go on QB Luke Altmyer’s 6-yard TD pass to WR Brandon Henderson and the ensuing extra point. Altmyer’s 4th TD pass — a 4-yarder to WR Pat Bryant — gave the Illinois the lead in OT and the defense responded with 3 sacks in extra frame to seal the come-from-behind victory.

Penn State crushed the visiting Kent State Golden Flashes 56-0 last Saturday, covering as a 49-point favorite. The Nittany Lions held the Golden Flashes to just 66 yards (48 rushing, 18 passing) and 6 first downs — Penn State’s offense finished with 718 yards and 40 first downs. QB Drew Allar threw for 309 yards and 3 TDs in the rout, while backup QB Beau Pribula and TE Tyler Warren each tossed a TD.

Illinois at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Penn State 34, Illinois 21

Moneyline

PASS.

Penn State (-900) will come away with the win as the big favorite, but the price is not worth the risk of betting on. Back the spread and/or O/U instead.

Against the spread

LEAN ILLINOIS +17.5 (-105).

Penn State has yet to face tough competition this season. It allowed a so-so Bowling Green team to stay within 1 score in its 2nd game, a 34-27 home victory as a 34-point favorite.

I expect Illinois to come out with some urgency that may shock Penn State. Look for this to be a tight game early with the Nittany Lions slightly pulling away in the 2nd half, but not enough to cover the 17.5 points.

This is a lean because the numbers say that Penn State is simply the better team and there is potential for Illinois to get blown out here.

Over/Under

BET OVER 47.5 (-115).

Illinois has a defense that is, at best, middle of the pack in the Big Ten as it allows 292.2 yards per game, according to NCAA.com. On the other side, Penn State’s offense ranks 7th in the country with 537.7 yards per game.

Penn State averages 41.3 points per game, while Illinois averages 32.3, so the averages say this game should blow well past the Over of 47.5.

Illinois at Penn State odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Tuesday’s Illinois at Penn State odds and lines, with college basketball expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Illinois Fighting Illini (17-7, 8-5 Big Ten) take on the slumping Penn State Nittany Lions (14-11, 5-9) at Bryce Jordan Center Tuesday. Tip is set for 7 p.m. ET (ESPNU). Below, we analyze Tipico Sportsbook’s lines around the Illinois vs. Penn State odds, and make our expert college basketball picks, predictions and bets.

This will be a rematch of a Dec.10 matchup in which Penn State, as a 10-point underdog, went to Champagne and beat Illinois 74-59.

Illinois recorded a 69-60 win as a 6-point favorite against Rutgers Saturday and now visits Penn State team riding a 4-game losing skid.

The Nittany Lions 74-68 at Maryland Saturday, but covered the spread as 8-point underdogs. Despite the against-the-spread (ATS) victory, the wheels have fallen off Penn State since starting the season 11-3. Following losses to Purdue, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Maryland, a win Tuesday would go a long way to correct the ills of the recent past.

Illinois at Penn State picks and predictions

Prediction

Illinois 75, Penn State 70

Moneyline

PASS.

Penn State (+135) has struggled in recent outings and doesn’t have a high enough price tag for a team entering on a 4-game losing skid.

Illinois (-170) is back on track following a mid-season lull. However, this line is too steep for me for a standalone bet but would be good to add to a parlay.

Stream select live college basketball games and full replays: Get ESPN+

Against the spread

TAKE ILLINOIS -3.5 (-105).

Penn State has found difficulty in hitting the 3-point shot recently. This is the way the Lions like to score and with this being ineffective, the Illini will be able to hold the home team down.

Illinois is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games overall and this game will make it 6-for-6 as they take care of Penn State and cover the points.

Over/Under

TAKE OVER 140.5 (-110).

Although Penn State is not likely to win. It will score just enough to get this game to the Over.

The Nittany Lions have gone Over in 6 straight home games and in 6 of their last 7 after a loss.

Illinois will come into this game ready to revenge the early December loss to Penn State and it will score in this game.

Illinois at Penn State: Three things to know

  1. PSU has lost two of its last three games, but overall the Nittany Lions have been solid on both sides of the ball and against a representative schedule. Penn State is coming off its worst shooting performance of the season, as the Lions shot just 31% from the floor in a 62-58 setback at Michigan Dec. 13. (PSU’s last scheduled game was nixed due to COVID-19-related travel concerns for a non-conference opponent.)
  2. Turnovers have been a problem (Big Ten-worst 14.9 TO per game) for an Illini squad that has lost three of five games since opening the season with three straight wins. UI’s most recent setback was a 91-88 game at Rutgers Sunday. In that game, the Illini were a minus-5 in turnover margin.
  3. Illinois beat Penn State 62-56 in last season’s meeting (Feb. 18). The Illini victory broke a string of six consecutive straight up and against the spread wins for the Lions.

Illinois at Penn State: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks

Prediction

Illinois 77, Penn State 75

Money line (ML)

The host Nittany Lions can hang in this one by converting turnovers into transition points and by connecting from beyond the arc. The Lions are quite good in both areas, but the caveat and area of concern for PSU bettors is the team’s nine-day layoff. Penn State is a top-quartile group from distance, both in 3-point accuracy and frequency of attempts. A spate of off days can throw off rhythm for shooters and this PSU squad struggled in similar situations last season (although with shorter layoffs).

Still, the price is right, at least for a partial-unit play: BACK PENN STATE (+170).

Against the spread (ATS)

Illinois is 1-3 ATS over four road tilts. PSU is 6-2 ATS over its last eight games as a home dog getting 6 or fewer points.

Penn State is a lean due to the line moving into 4-point territory. It’s not a high-confidence lean because of the layoff, so consider a partial-unit play if taking the NITTANY LIONS +4.5 (-110).

Over/Under (O/U)

Both of these teams play at an above-average tempo but expect the Lions to stay within a couple of possessions and be a bit more deliberate down the stretch. PASS ON THE O/U ACTION FOR THIS ONE.
