Illinois high school cancels varsity football season

Riverton High School has won one of its last 17 football games. The school will build the program from the JV level and not have a varsity team in 2024.

There will be no high school football season at Riverton High School (Ill.) in 2024.

Activities director Katie Nichols released a statement saying the decision was made “after low participation numbers and for the safety of our student-athletes.”

While there will be no varsity team in 2024, there will be a JV program. The goal is to build from there and have a varsity team again in 2025.

Riverton High School is a member of the Sangamo Conference in the Springfield area. It has gone 1-17 over the past two seasons. In a winless 2023, it was outscored 485-73.

College football recruiting: Five-star Justin Scott sets commitment date

Perhaps the biggest target on Notre Dame’s list for 2024 has set a commitment date.

One of the top prospects in the entire 2024 recruiting class has set his commitment date.  Just days after releasing his top eight, five-star defensive lineman Justin Scott appears set to make a commitment.  He’ll be spending his birthday at the end of January making his commitment to a college football program.

Scott is rated as a five-star prospect by 247Sports and the 18th overall player in the class.  The human road block stands at a towering 6-5 and checks in at 310 pounds.  Wherever he ends up choosing to play college football, chances are strong it won’t take long for him to find the field and make an impact.

Notre Dame was named among Scott’s top eight just days ago.  It was a list that was full of college football’s biggest powers in recent years.  The list also included Colorado and Miami.

Stay tuned as we’re under three weeks away from that announcement from the St. Ignatius star.

Notre Dame receiver commit Cam Williams thrills in season opener

Nice 2022 debut for the kid.

Notre Dame made a big score over the summer when [autotag]Cam Williams[/autotag], the top junior in Illinois according to 247Sports, committed to the program. Since he’s a member of the 2024 recruiting class, we have a couple of years before we can watch him run out of the tunnel at Notre Dame Stadium. For now, he will focus on helping Glenbard South win. That he did Friday in the first game of 2022.

Williams scored two touchdowns, one receiving and one rushing, in a 44-12 victory over East Aurora. He also made a long reception on the game’s opening possession to help set up the game’s first touchdown. While he didn’t catch everything thrown his way in part because he was covered at times, everyone got to see how high he can jump. That alone is worthy of respect from both his teammates and his opponents, and we only can imagine how much better he’ll be at it by the time he gets to South Bend.

We’ve interviewed Williams once before, but we’ll have another with him coming soon. For now, keep it here for all the news on Irish recruits and commits.
