Iga Swiatek denied Danielle Collins’ accusation of an insincere congratulations after their tense Olympics tennis match

It was a VERY tense day between Iga Swiatek and Danielle Collins in Paris.

In the heat of high-level Olympic tennis, emotions are bound to run wild. What happened between world No. 1, Poland’s Iga Swiatek, and the USA’s Danielle Collins during the women’s singles quarterfinals on Wednesday in Paris is no exception.

It’s practically an inevitability of competition.

Tensions between the two tennis stars seemingly started during a scary moment in the final set. When Collins volleyed a ball back from center court that accidentally hit Swiatek in the ribs, the Polish athlete was staggered for a moment.

Fortunately for Swiatek, after Collins and a match official checked on her, she was apparently OK enough to continue playing:

Later, lip-readers thought Collins quietly called out Swiatek for seemingly trying to delay her while she was serving:

Collins would later suffer an apparent abdominal injury, ostensibly from dehydration resulting from temperatures that reached the upper 90s (Fahrenheit) in Paris on Wednesday. The ailment would eventually force Collins to retire from the match, conceding defeat to Swiatek, with the Polish player leading the third set 4-1 at the time.

When Collins and Swiatek greeted each other at the end of the match, tennis fans thought their handshake seemed a little more heated than you’d expect for a customary goodbye. Their assumptions proved correct.

According to Christopher Clarey, Collins thought Swiatek was showing off “fakeness” by being “insincere” about well-wishes for her injury.

In response, Swiatek reportedly denied Collins’ accusation, asserting she’s never done anything “nasty” to the American player while maintaining she was trying to congratulate Collins on her career, who is officially retiring from tennis at the end of this current season with the aim of starting a family.

More from Poland’s Interia Sport (translated):

“Well, I won’t argue about it [Collins’ insincere accusation] because I’ve never done anything nasty to her [Collins],” Swiatek said. “I rather wanted to congratulate her on her successful career because we all know that this is her last year on tour … Honestly, I don’t know what she meant because we didn’t even have any interactions that could have caused her to say that to me.”

Phew. I suppose all of this chaos is par for the course for elite competitors playing for their countries, but what a whirlwind to unpack. If there is still some lingering animosity between Swiatek and Collins after this, here’s hoping they ensure it’s all water under the bridge in the near future.

Tennis star Iga Świątek was giddy over a personalized note from Taylor Swift after attending the Eras Tour

What a month of June for the young superstar.

It has been quite the month of June so far for tennis sensation Iga Świątek. The 23-year-old Polish star won her third straight French Open on June 8, losing just one set through the entire tournament. Świątek is the world No. 1, occupying that top spot for over 100 weeks now.

On June 13, Świątek was in attendance for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour show in Liverpool. The incredibly talented tennis pro is a longtime Swiftie, proclaiming folklore and evermore her favorite albums. On top of finally getting to see the show, Świątek got an extra bonus treat as the 14-time Grammy winner hand wrote a note to her and had it delivered to her VIP tent.

“I’m dead” Świątek tweeted with a selfie of her holding the note. “Yes, I cried many times during the show. Yes, it was incredible. You are amazing @taylorswift13.”

Iga Świątek is a bagel away from setting a new tennis record at the French Open

Iga Swiatek is enjoying so many lovely bagels lately.

To say Iga Świątek loves playing at Roland-Garros would be a massive understatement. In fact, with the Polish world No. 1’s latest dominant win over Markéta Vondroušová on Tuesday, Świątek has now firmly established one of the greatest runs we’ve ever seen in women’s tennis.

Just days after recording a dominant double bagel over Anastasia Potapova — a bagel is when a set finishes 6-0 — Świątek did it again to Vondroušová during their first set. That means Świątek has now recorded an unfathomable three bagels during the second week of a major.

It is something only nine women have ever done, with Serena Williams in 2013 being the only other star to have achieved it since 1989.

That is positively mind-boggling:

None of this dominance is particularly surprising from Świątek. In her young career, the French Open has turned out to be the Polish player’s bread and butter. Świątek is vying for her third straight singles title at Roland-Garros and her fourth win in five years. Talk about a dynasty.

Next up? The world No. 3, Coco Gauff, in the semifinals. If Świątek somehow records a bagel and beats Gauff convincingly, well, it might be time to start a well-earned coronation.

Iga Swiatek’s absurdly quick French Open win even amazed Coco Gauff

Iga Swiatek really outdid herself during Sunday’s French open match.

When you’re the world No. 1 like Iga Swiatek, it can seem like there’s nothing all that notable to accomplish. Even when you make incredible comebacks, the expectation was that you were supposed to win in the first place anyway.

But Sunday’s fourth-round 2024 French Open win was a marvel even for the best women’s tennis player in the world.

In defeating Russia’s Anastasia Potapova, Swiatek really flexed her muscles. The 23-year-old Polish star won the match 6-0, 6-0 in 40 minutes (!) and lost just a total of 10 points to advance to the quarterfinals. It was the shortest match of her already illustrious career by far.

That is absolutely astonishing, especially at this level of world-class tennis.

Swiatek’s performance was so dominant that it even shocked Coco Gauff, the current world No. 3. Gauff — who also advanced to the quarterfinals — had expected Swiatek to quickly dispatch her opponent. But not that fast!

You know you’re doing something right when you’re even taking aback your elite peers with your play. It’s worth noting that should Swiatek and Gauff both advance again, they can meet in the quarterfinals next Thursday.

As for Swiatek, the Polish star is pursuing rare air. With another French Open title, the two-time reigning champion would become the youngest woman in the professional era to win four French Open singles titles. Swiatek is an astounding 32-2 Roland-Garros since her debut at the tournament in 2019.

Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka’s 3-hour French Open thriller left tennis fans in awe

What a mind-bogglingly good match from Iga Swiatek and Naomi Osaka.

Iga Swiatek, the world’s top-ranked tennis player, and Naomi Osaka might have played one of the most stressful second-round matches at the French Open fans have ever seen, and they loved every minute of it.

After a very tight first set that Iga won 7-6, Naomi stormed back to take the second set 6-1 and eventually went up 5-2 during the third set with a match point in sight.

That’s when Iga turned up the heat and WENT SCORCHED EARTH. She fully lived up to her “queen of clay” moniker and forced Osaka into some errors that eventually cleared a pathway for her to win the match with a 7-5 deciding set.

The match was such an amazing chess match that Naomi Osaka — who is returning from having a baby and showed impressive endurance — received a standing ovation from the crowd.

Tennis fans also loved how incredible the match was and showered both Iga and Naomi with praise. Here’s what they said:

Cotton Eye Joe song randomly interrupted tense match between Jessica Pegula, Iga Świątek

Where did this song come from and where did it go?

Jessica Pegula and Iga Świątek were just charging along as normal during their Canadian Open semi-final match on Saturday. And there came a point during the second set where they found themselves seeking a pivotal tie-breaking point at six-all.

But towards the end of a solid sequence of volleys, the 1995 hit song “Cotton Eye Joe” randomly started blasting over what appeared to be some loudspeakers by the court. Both players stopped, the watching crowd audibly gasped, and even the judge on the side couldn’t quite believe a song like that — from out of nowhere — interrupted the match.

What a profoundly weird moment:

After deliberation, Pegula and Świątek simply replayed the point and moved on. Pegula would eventually prevail in three sets. No harm, no foul.

But still: no one knows where this came from or where did it go?

Iga Swiatek’s incredible 37 match winning streak just ended at Wimbledon and fans were in shock

Iga Swiatek’s historic winning streak has finally come to an end

Nothing in the world of tennis is ever a foregone conclusion — especially not these days with the field being so competitive.

But, man. There aren’t many safer bets than Iga Swiatek out there in the world of tennis. She’s almost as good a bet as prime Serena Williams and she has the numbers to back it up.

Coming into Saturday at Wimbledon, Swiatek had a 37-match winning streak under her belt and was the favorite to win the whole thing. What happened next was just unbelievable.

Not only did she lose her match, but she lost in straight sets to Alize Cornet. It was truly jaw-dropping.

Despite the result, her winning streak is still pretty incredible and should be appreciated when the time is right.

For context, only 3 players in both the men’s and women’s side of tennis have had a streak of 37 matches or longer, per ESPN. Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Swiatek. That’s it.

That’s certainly something to be proud of. It’s also why this was so unbelievable. Fans everywhere were shocked.

Iga Świątek might be the best bet for a Grand Slam since prime Venus and Serena Williams

There seems to be no stopping tennis’s potential next great superstar.

The tennis world seems to run into a few unstoppable forces every so often. Over the last two decades, that has often been Serena Williams and Venus Williams. It appears the guard is now officially changing toward the future.

On Tuesday, reigning French Open champ and the current world No. 1 in Iga Świątek cruised through an opening match against Jana Fett during the first round of Wimbledon 2022. In the process, the 21-year-old Świątek teased the potential for more glory in the future.

How, you might ask? You see, Świątek’s win over Fett was her 36th consecutive victory. That is the most in the 21st century, notably surpassing both of the Williams sisters’ top-ever streaks:

Wow. For additional context, Świątek could soon possess the second-longest winning streak with two more wins. That would break Martina Hingis’s best mark (37), which ended in 1997. (Świątek still has a ways to go to challenge the longest streak of 74 — set by Martina Navratilova in 1984.)

Many consider the Williams sisters to be two of the best tennis players of all time. Hingis and Navratilova are no slouches in the greatness department, either. That Świątek surpasses some of their best achievements or is even being mentioned in passing alongside them probably portends great things for her future.

Like, say, her first title at Wimbledon.

Before it started, oddsmakers with Tipico Sportsbook gave Świątek the best odds to win Wimbledon (+125). She is +135 to win her second-round matchup against Lesley Pattinama Kerkhove on Thursday. In hindsight, with all we know now, both of those projections seem very low.

Świątek is already making tennis history. If she’s emulating living legends, she might be the safest bet to win a Grand Slam in a while.
