Kamaru Usman sees holes in Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry’s games after UFC 310

Kamaru Usman says Shavkat Rakhmonov “was a little bit more of a dog” than Ian Garry at UFC 310.

[autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] believes UFC 310 exposed both [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] and [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag]’s games.

Rakhmonov (19-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) scored a unanimous decision win over Machado Garry (15-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) in this past Saturday’s five-round co-main event at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. Rakhmonov saw the judges’ scorecards for the first time in his career and had to survive a late rear-naked choke attempt by Machado Garry.

Usman, who, like Rakhmonov and Machado Garry, has trained at Kill Cliff FC, wasn’t surprised with the way the fight played out.

“That’s what I expected,” Usman said on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast. “Ian needs to create space. Ian’s a very good and dynamic striker. You could tell. You saw that in the fight. If he’s able to create space, then he’s able to kind of get his flow going.

“And Shavkat wants to get to the action, ‘I’ve got to get my hands on you.’ This is some of the things that I was seeing, but obviously with the potential of me potentially fighting him, I didn’t want to give too much away, but these are some of the things that I’m seeing. There are holes in both of their games.”

Prior to UFC 310, Usman said that the fight is only exciting on paper. He was right to a degree as Rakhmonov and Machado Garry spent plenty of time fighting in the clinch.

The former UFC welterweight champion thinks Rakhmonov’s competitive win over Machado Garry came down to heart.

“I am a wrestler,” Usman said. “Once Ian got taken down a few times then the fight kind of got away from him. Shavkat, as far as standing and putting the combinations together, he couldn’t really do that well with Ian Garry. There are holes in both of their games, but I expected a fight like this.

“And I knew it wasn’t going to be the most barnburner, exciting fight that a lot of people were salivating over. But nonetheless, it shows how Shavkat is a dog. He’s willing to just do whatever it takes to get in there and get that win, and so is Ian. It’s just that Shavkat was a little bit more of a dog than Ian Garry.”

Kamaru Usman slams Ian Machado Garry for claiming he ducked UFC fight

Kamaru Usman thinks Ian Machado Garry should know his place before accusing a former UFC champ of ducking anyone.

Former UFC welterweight champion [autotag]Kamaru Usman[/autotag] continues to take issue with fighters suggesting he ducked them.

[autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] (15-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) recently said a potential fight with Usman (20-4 MMA, 15-3 UFC) was in discussion for Saturday’s UFC on ESPN 63 event in Tampa, Fla., before he wound up stepping in to face Shavkat Rakhmonov this past weekend at UFC 310. He lost the bout by unanimous decision.

Prior to UFC 310, Machado Garry went off on Usman, claiming that UFC brass told him the former longtime welterweight champion wants nothing to do with him.

Usman fired back at Machado Garry when podcast co-host Henry Cejudo suggested they should fight each other next in the aftermath of UFC 310.

“Does he even deserve that?” Usman said on his “Pound 4 Pound” podcast. “Leading up to this fight, there was a lot being said. He made a lot of things (up): ‘Everyone’s running from me, these guys are running from me.’ I don’t run from anybody, no one. I run from no one, and I don’t know too many guys that are going to run from anyone, because this is the game. We fight to make money.

“If we don’t fight, we don’t get paid. Anyone in the UFC has to step in there in order to get paid. So the notion of, ‘Oh yeah, they were scared of me, they were running.’ Like, who are you? Who are you that I, of all people, am scared of you? I guess he was upset because he wanted me to be his late-notice replacement for his fight. Who the f*ck is that guy for me to be a late replacement for?”

Usman hasn’t fought since stepping in on short notice to face Khamzat Chimaev in a middleweight bout at UFC 294 in October 2023. He rallied late to lose a majority decision.

UFC 310 video: What did we learn from Shavkat Rakhmonov’s win over Ian Machado Garry?

Are both Shavkat Rakhmonov and Ian Machado Garry destined for gold after the way their UFC 310 fight played out?

[autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] emerged from the battle of unbeaten welterweight contender against [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] on Saturday at UFC 310.

Rakhmonov (19-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) kept his perfect streak alive at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas with a unanimous decision win over Machado Garry (15-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) that set him up as the No. 1 contender for champion Belal Muhammad.

Muhammad (24-3 MMA, 15-3 UFC) was originally supposed to defend against Rakhmonov at UFC 310 before a foot infection removed him from the fight. That allowed Machado Garry to step in, and he delivered a performance that tested Rakhmonov’s game more so than ever before.

[lawrence-related id=2791992,2791990,2790703,2791818]

There was much to digest from the contest, which saw Rakhmonov and Machado Garry go five rounds for the first time in the octagon and push each other. How will a title fight between Muhammad and Rakhmonov go? What’s Machado Garry’s potential going forward?

That was a topic of discussion on this week’s episode of “Spinning Back Clique” with host “Gorgeous” George Garcia and panelists Nolan King, Matthew Wells and Brian “Goze” Garcia.

Spinning Back Clique LIVE: Pantoja, Rakhmonov’s big UFC 310 wins, UFC 311 & 312 title booking, more

On this week’s episode of Spinning Back Clique, the panel reacts to Alexandre Pantoja’s title win at UFC 310, recent title bookings, more.

Check out this week’s “Spinning Back Clique,” MMA Junkie’s weekly live show that takes a spin through the biggest topics in mixed martial arts.

This week’s panel of Brian “Goze” Garcia, Matt Wells, and Nolan King will join host “Gorgeous” George Garcia live at noon ET (9 a.m. PT) to discuss and debate the following topics:

  • [autotag]Alexandre Pantoja[/autotag] defended his UFC flyweight title in stellar fashion, submitting former Rizin FF champion Kai Asakura in the main event of UFC 310. After the fight, Pantoja called out former UFC flyweight champion [autotag]Demetrious Johnson[/autotag]. Could Johnson be convinced to return? If not, what’s next for Pantoja? Where does this loss leave Asakura? We discuss.
  • Pantoja wasn’t the only one with a big win on Saturday. [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] cemented himself as the No. 1 contender at 170 pounds with a decision win over fellow top contender [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag]. With a UFC title fight on the horizon, what are Rakhmonov’s chances against Belal Muhammad? How much interest could this fight draw? We react to Rakhmonov’s big win and what could be next for Machado Garry.
  • Plenty of other things went down at UFC 310 outside the main and co-main event. Alexander Volkov lost a controversial and highly-debated split decision to Ciryl Gane. Kron Gracie was viciously knocked out in his MMA return. And veterans Anthony Smith, Chris Weidman, and Clay Guida all took defeats – which could mark the end of their MMA careers. We react to it all.
  • The UFC got busy booking their next two pay-per-view shows. This past week, the promotion revealed the main and co-main event bouts for UFC 311 and UFC 312. A lightweight and bantamweight bout pitting Islam Makhachev vs. Arman Tsarukyan, and Merab Dvalishvili and Umar Nurmagomedov is set to headline UFC 311 on Jan. 18 in Los Angeles. Also, a middleweight and women’s strawweight championship bout headline UFC 312 on Feb. 8 in Sydney, as Dricus Du Plessis rematches Sean Strickland, and Tatiana Suarez finally gets her long-awaited shot at Zhang Weili. We reat to the championship bookings.
  • Things heated up outside the octagon these last few days. Dvalishvili and Nurmagomedov had to be separated backstage on Thursday, and two days later, Dvalishvili and Dennis Buzukja got physical with a fan while walking through the arena at UFC 310. Buzukja was seen punching a fan. Nate Diaz and Islam Makhachev also threw things at each other before getting separated by security, and Jamahall Hill confronted Alex Pereira at the UFC Performance Institute. What’s going on? Is the UFC properly handling security? We discuss.
  • This coming Saturday, the UFC closes their 2024 with a Fight Night event in Tampa, Fla. UFC on ESPN 63 features a key welterweight bout between former interim champion Colby Covington taking on rising title contender Joaquim Buckley. Who will win? Could the winner set himself up for a title shot? We break it all down.

Ian Machado Garry: ‘I don’t feel like I lost’ at UFC 310, Shavkat Rakhmonov ‘won by opinion’

Ian Machado Garry reflects on his decision loss to Shavkat Rakhmonov in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC 310.

LAS VEGAS – Losing the zero on his record didn’t change the way [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] looks at his career and his upside in the UFC, not one bit.

The Irish welterweight contender entered Saturday’s UFC 310 co-main event against Shavkat Rakhmonov with undefeated status and left the event without it, as he came up short in a unanimous decision. Yet, despite the defeat to Rakhmonov (19-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC), Machado Garry (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) doesn’t feel like a loser, and in fact, thinks he further proved that he’s bound to become UFC welterweight champion.

“I don’t feel like I lost today,” Machado Garry told reporters at the UFC 310 post-fight press conference. “I might’ve not gotten my hand raised, but I came out, and I fought a giant. I came out, and I fought the boogeyman, and I showed that he’s f*cking human. I went out there on three weeks’ notice, I saved this event, I saved this card and against the scariest man in the division. I went out there and I stopped almost everything. There was no point where he looked like he was going to finish the fight, and I put him in two submissions. I took his back, and I had fun.

“I showed that I can hang with the single best in the division and proved tonight, on short notice, that I can absolutely be a champion. I can do it for five rounds and there are no holes in my game. There was nothing that man brought for me tonight. He won by opinion, and that’s ok. That’s ok. I can live with that.”

It’s unclear what’s next for Machado Garry at the moment, but it’s safe to assume that Rakhmonov will be challenging UFC welterweight champion Belal Muhammad in 2025.

Machado Garry feels Rakhmonov is bound to win the title, which makes a potential rematch or even trilogy almost inevitable.

“I said it before the fight, I believe that he’s better than everybody else and I believe that I’m better than everyone else, and we’re going to see each other multiple times,” Machado Garry explained. “We’re going to see each other multiple times in our careers. I don’t believe that we’re going to see each other just one more time, I think it might be twice. I think he’s that good, and I know I’m that good.”

Shavkat Rakhmonov proud of Ian Machado Garry win despite not getting finish at UFC 310

Shavkat Rakhmonov reflects on his victory over Ian Machado Garry at Saturday’s UFC 310.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] wasn’t able to maintain his 100 percent finishing rate, but he did keep his undefeated status.

The UFC welterweight contender picked up a unanimous decision win over [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] (15-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in the co-main event of Saturday’s UFC 310. It was a big win for Rakhmonov (19-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC), as this sets him up to fight champion Belal Muhammad for the UFC welterweight title. Although it’s a big gain, Rakhmonov did lose his the ability to say he’s stopped all of his rivals.

“Who doesn’t want to finish fights?” Rakhmonov told reporters at the UFC 310 post-fight press conference. “I did everything in my power to do so, but Ian had a great preparation, but I believe next fight I will continue my finishing streak.”

Rakhmonov’s main objective was to get his hand raised by any means necessary – which he accomplished.

“For me, it’s most important to get the win, and I’m happy I won,” Rakhmonov said.

The Kazakh, who trained with Machado Garry in the past at Kill Cliff, respects Machado Garry and felt a lot of improvement since the last time the two training together. Rakhmonov expects this to be the first of many future meets with his former teammate.

“For sure,” Rakhmonov said. “We’re going to keep winning and if he keeps winning, we’re going to meet again.”

As far as what’s next, it’s pretty clear a title shot follows. Rakhmonov would like that to be in Spring of 2025.

“I’m the No. 1 title contender and hopefully April or May next year we’re going to face each other,” Rakhmonov said.

UFC 310 results: Shavkat Rakhmonov survives late scare, hands Ian Machado Garry first loss

The UFC 310 co-main event got wild late as Shavkat Rakhmonov was nearly submitted by Ian Machado Garry.

LAS VEGAS – Someone’s “0” had to go at UFC 310 – and that someone was [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag].

In Saturday’s co-main event at T-Mobile Arena, [autotag]Shavkat Rakhmonov[/autotag] defeated [autotag]Ian Machado Garry[/autotag] by unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 48-47).

Former training partners, Rakhmonov (19-0 MMA, 7-0 UFC) and Machado Garry (15-1 MMA, 8-1 UFC) were well-acquainted as they entered the bout. The each fought measured without much risk, which was perhaps a sign of the respect they had for each other.

A technical striker, Machado Garry was unable to consistently utilized the tools that historically proved most successful. Rakhmonov implemented his typical game plan as he ground Machado Garry into the fence and frustrated him with precise one-punch combinations.

Machado Garry found his most success in Round 3. After he separated from Rakhmonov, he landed some strikes before the round ended.

In what may have been a UFC first, Machado Garry changed into a new pair of shorts in between Round 3 and 4 due to what appeared to be a malfunction.

In Round 4, Rakhmonov took Machado Garry down. He worked for the back but Machado Garry expertly scrambled and tried for a rear-naked choke of his own. The drama was short-lived. Rakhmonov regained dominant position. Once back up, Rakhmonov took Machado Garry down again and landed some ground-and-pound before the horn.

The final round was a rollercoaster of emotions and momentum. In a shocking turn of events, Machado Garry took Rakhmonov’s back on the ground and nearly locked in a rear-naked choke. Rakhmonov strained and twisted and eventually turned into Garry. The two got to the feet briefly where Machado Garry landed one hard strike before the final horn.

When the dust settled and the judges’ scorecards were read, Rakhmonov was declared the victor.

With the win, Rakhmonov remains unbeaten and solidifies himself a title shot vs. Belal Muhammad, who entered the cage for an impromptu faceoff after the decision. Meanwhile, Garry loses for the first time in his career.
