The Carolina Hurricanes and New York Islanders meet in Game 3 of a best-of-7 Eastern Conference 1st-round series Thursday in New York. The Hurricanes lead the series 2-0. Puck drop from UBS Arena is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. ET (ESPN2). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

The Islanders looked great for half of Game 2 on Monday, and it was in good shape all the way until halfway into the 3rd period, up 3-1. That’s when the floodgates opened, and New York had a brutal collapse that might be difficult to forget.

Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat scored a pair of even-strength goals in the 1st period, and the latter was a killer at 19:45, giving the visitors a 2-0 lead. PNC Arena was uncharacteristically quiet, sans for the smattering for New Yorkers holding tickets. Anders Lee scored a power-play goal at 3:54 of the 2nd period, and the Canes looked to be in trouble.

Teuvo Teravainen struck for a power-play goal 10 minutes later in the 2nd period on a selfless pass from Jake Guentzel in front of Semyon Varlamov‘s cage, and Carolina suddenly had life.

It remained 3-1 until 10:43 of the 3rd period when Seth Jarvis scored. He posted an assist on Sebastian Aho‘s goal at 17:45, as the Canes tied it, and then just 9 seconds later, it was a “Marty Party”, as Jordan Martinook scored at 17:54 to give Carolina a 4-3 lead. Guentzel added an empty-net goal, and what looked like a sure win for the Islanders, turned to dust, and an 0-2 series hole.

Hurricanes at Islanders projected goalies

Frederik Andersen (13-2-0, 1.84 GAA, .932 SV%, 3 SO in regular season) vs. Ilya Sorokin (25-19-12, 3.01 GAA, .909 SV%, 2 SO in regular season)

Andersen has allowed just 4 goals on 46 shots in this series, good for a 2-0-0 record, 2.02 GAA and .913 SV% in the 2 games. It’s been a tale of 2 games, too, as he kicked aside 33 of 34 shots in Game 1, while allowing 3 goals on just 12 shots for the entirety of Game 2. The Islanders have to take some positives from the fact they scored on 25% of their shots last time out.

Sorokin is confirmed to make his 1st start of the series, as coach Patrick Roy, who knows a thing or two about postseason goaltending, shifts from Semyon Varlamov. The 35-year-old Varlamov is 0-2-0 with a 3.03 GAA and .905 SV% in 2 games in this series.

Sorokin allowed 3 goals on 33 shots in a 4-1 home loss to the Hurricanes on March 19, but he made 36 saves in a 5-4 win in Raleigh on Dec. 23, and he made 42 saves in a wild 4-3 OTL against the Hurricanes on Nov. 4 at UBS Arena.

Hurricanes at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

The ISLANDERS (+135) are back in front of the home fans for Game 3, and that could be enough to turn the tide in their favor.

New York looked good for most of Game 2, holding a 3-1 leading into the midway portion of the 3rd period before folding like a tent. If it can maintain focus, and Sorokin and the home crowd can give them a bump, New York can still make this a series.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Islanders +1.5 (-190) are too expensive on the puck line, costing you nearly 2 times your potential return. If you need a little insurance, and just can’t pick New York straight up, it isn’t worth it.

PASS.

Over/Under

UNDER 5.5 (-115) is worth a play in Game 3.

We had a lower-scoring Game 1, with just 4 goals on the board. Game 2 was shaping up as an Under result, too, before the floodgates opened and we had 4 goals from Carolina in the 3rd period to flip things to the Over.

The total has gone low in 2 of the past 3 skates at UBS Arena between these teams, including the only regular-season meeting on March 19 on Long Island. The most recent playoff meeting at UBS Arena, Game 6 of the 1st round last season, also cashed Under.

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders Game 4 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Sunday’s Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders Game 4 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Carolina Hurricanes meet the New York Islanders on Sunday for Game 4 of the Eastern Conference quarterfinals. Puck drop from UBS Arena in Elmont, N.Y., is scheduled for 1 p.m. ET (TNT).  Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Carolina leads the series 2-1.

The Hurricanes were tied 1-1 after 40 minutes in Game 3, as they looked to snap an ugly playoff road losing streak. However, the dam broke in the 3rd period, much to the dismay of Under bettors, and Carolina dropped its 8th straight road playoff game in a 5-1 loss.

Carolina’s last win on the road in the postseason game June 5, 2021, in Tampa, and it’s last road victory in regulation was Aug. 13, 2020, in the Bubble in Toronto. If you don’t count that, the last true road win in the playoffs for Carolina was April 28, 2019, against the Islanders in Game 2 of the 2nd round.

The Islanders saw Kyle Palmieri strike on the power play with 3:51 remaining in regulation, making it 2-1. Under (5.5) bettors were still feeling good, but then Matt Martin scored at 16:53, Scott Mayfield hit an empty-net goal at 18:11, and Anders Lee followed with a goal at 18:27, leaving Under bettors shaking their collective heads.

Hurricanes at Islanders Game 4 projected goalies

Antti Raanta (19-3-3, 2.23 GAA, .910 SV%, 4 SO – regular season) vs. Ilya Sorokin (31-22-7, 2.34 GAA, .924 SV%, 6 SO – regular season) vs.

Raanta deserved a much better fate in Game 3. He was charged with 4 goals on 36 shots, but he played well for 55-56 minutes, really. The Canes provided him with little offensive support, and left him high and dry defensively late in the 3rd period.

Sorokin grabbed his 1st playoff win of the season, kicking aside 30 of the 31 shots he has faced. The Mezhdurechensk, Russia, native is having a solid postseason, going 1-2-0 with a 2.29 GAA and .942 SV% through 3 games.

Hurricanes at Islanders Game 4 picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

The ISLANDERS (-125) are the safe play, as the Hurricanes (+105) simply cannot be trusted on the road in the playoffs. Continue to fade Carolina until it can finally get over the hump and snap the NHL’s longest active postseason road losing streak.

Puck line/Against the spread

The Hurricanes +1.5 (-275) are way too expensive if you like Carolina to keep it close in a low-scoring game, but can’t pick it straight up. Laying nearly 3 times your potential return is not a recommended long-term betting strategy.

AVOID.

Over/Under

I believe we’re going to have another low-scoring battle, and the Over/Under 5 should fall right on the number.

If I had a lean, I’d go super lightly on the Under. We’ve seen tremendous goaltending and defense in this series, and the penalty kill for both teams has been outstanding.

PASS.

Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders Game 3 odds, picks and predictions

Analyzing Friday’s Carolina Hurricanes at New York Islanders Game 3 odds and lines, with NHL expert picks, predictions and best bets.

The Carolina Hurricanes hit the road to face the New York Islanders Friday in Game 3 of their 1st-round series at UBS Arena. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. ET (TBS). Below, we analyze BetMGM Sportsbook’s lines around the Hurricanes vs. Islanders odds, and make our expert NHL picks and predictions.

Series: Hurricanes lead 2-0

Carolina survived a Game 2 scare with a 4-3 win in overtime. RW Jesper Fast ended it just over 5 minutes into the extra frame. The win came at a cost, though, as LW Teuvo Teravainen suffered a broken hand and is out for the rest of the series. The team was already without All-Star RW Andrei Svechnikov, who was lost to knee surgery last month.

The Isles took a 3-2 lead midway through the 3rd period but couldn’t contain the Canes. The series shifts to Long Island, where the Islanders were 25-13-3 during the regular season. The Hurricanes have won the last 5 meetings, though.

Hurricanes at Islanders projected goalies

Frederik Andersen (21-11-1, 2.48 GAA, .903 SV%, 1 SO – regular season) vs. Ilya Sorokin (31-22-7, 2.34 GAA, .924 SV%, 6 SO – regular season)

Antti Raanta stopped 23 of 26 shots in Game 2 and has a 1.92 GAA and .923 SV% in the series. However, Andersen is expected to return from an illness for Game 3. Andersen stopped 21 of 22 shots in an April 2 victory over the Isles. He was 2-1-0 with a 2.67 GAA and .905 SV% in 3 games against the Islanders this year.

Sorokin stopped 33 of 36 shots fired his way in Game 2. He has a 2.92 GAA and .932 SV% in the series and has really kept his team in the hunt. He was 1-3 with a 2.79 GAA and .911 SV% in 4 games against the Canes in the regular season.

Hurricanes at Islanders picks and predictions

Prediction

Islanders 3, Hurricanes 2

Moneyline

The Islanders have momentum after nearly stealing home-ice advantage, and now the Hurricanes are turning to a goalie who hasn’t played in a week and are down a top-line forward. The Isles will get at least 1 in this series, and they have won 4 in a row at home.

Take the ISLANDERS -120.

Puck line/Against the spread

The last 3 games between the teams have been decided by 1 goal, and that’s likely again in Game 3. However there’s no way we can drop -275 on that likelihood.

PASS and look to the total.

Over/Under

Five is a small number, but it is on point. Three of the last 5 games between the teams have been Under this number. The Under is 9-3 in the last 12 for Carolina and 8-2 in their last 10 against Metropolitan Division opponents. Head to the Win/Total section and take ISLANDERS AND UNDER 6.5 GOALS (+160) for a nice payout with a little cushion.
