Raiders’ Hunter Renfrow demolishes Tevaughn Campbell on Chargers fake punt

The Chargers tried a fake punt in the first quarter of their Monday Night Football game against the Raiders, and Hunter Renfrow made them regret it.

With 2:03 left in the first quarter of the Monday Night Football contest between the Raiders and Chargers, the Chargers decided to attempt a fake punt from the Las Vegas 41-yard line. Punter Ty Long had a sideline pass to defensive back Tevaughn Campbell all set up, but Raiders receiver Hunter Renfrow was all over the play, coming down from coverage to prevent Campbell from holding onto the ball with a perfect impact hit.

The Raiders went three-and-out on the subsequent drive, in part due to their interesting strategy of allowing rookie right tackle Alex Leatherwood to try and handle Chargers edge-rusher Joey Bosa one-on-one (might want to throw that out right away), but Renfrow made a very impressive play here. Given his combination of speed to the target and aggressiveness when he got there, perhaps the Raiders should consider subbing him in at defensive back once in a while.

Identifying the Chargers’ biggest defensive X-Factor vs. Raiders

Spotlighting the defensive player whose performance could have the biggest impact on Monday’s game between the Chargers and Raiders.

The Raiders come into SoFi Stadium as one of the hottest passing offenses in the league, with quarterback Derek Carr playing some of the best football in his career.

Carr is fifth in both yards per passing attempt and air yards per target and leads the league in passing yards. Amid his high production, Las Vegas has four receivers — Darren Waller, Henry Ruggs III, Hunter Renfrow, and Bryan Edwards — over 200 receiving yards.

On the other hand, the Chargers’ defense is seventh in total passing defense, 11th in yards per pass attempt allowed, and has only allowed one opposing player (Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce) to surpass 100 yards receiving yards through three weeks.

Despite how excellent the defense is against the pass, Los Angeles will still have a lot to account for with Carr’s level. And if there is one player who can have a significant impact on it, it’s safety Derwin James.

It is presumed that James will spend most of the game covering Waller, the stud tight end who has hauled in 21 receptions for 249 yards and two touchdowns in four career games against Los Angeles.

While James will have his fair share of snaps lined up across from Waller, the unit will still need to beware of the others capable of taking over, like Ruggs, the second-year speedster who has averaged 95.5 yards per game.

Therefore, James will likely be deployed like he was against the Chiefs. Meaning, he will have his occasional one-on-one matchups in the slot, as well as some of the brute work in the box. But, he will also serve as a deep safety to eliminate crossers and vertical routes too.

Carr might be shredding opposing defenses heading into the matchup. But if there’s a time where he could cool down, it’s this week, as James is capable of taking over the game with his playmaking skills from an array of alignments.

How the Raiders’ offense matches up against the Chargers’ defense

The Raiders offense is another tough test for the Chargers’ defense.

In the first three weeks of the 2021 regular season, the Chargers have faced and fared well against two of the league’s best offenses, the Cowboys and Chiefs.

Los Angeles won’t get much of a breather in Week 4, as the team is set to battle it out in primetime with the Raiders, who boast a red-hot offense.

Led by quarterback Derek Carr, who is playing some of the best football in his career, Las Vegas has the fifth-most points (90). Carr is leading the league in passing yards (1203) and passing yards per game (401).

With a slew of skill players around him, Carr is first in explosive plays. As a result, four pass-catchers have already surpassed 200 receiving yards: Darren Waller, Henry Ruggs, Bryan Edwards, and Hunter Renfrow.

On the other hand, the Chargers have the recipe to neutralize the Raiders’ passing attack. Just ask Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who was held to one of his least productive performances to date last Sunday.

Los Angeles ranks seventh in passing yards allowed (201.7), tied for fourth in interceptions (3), and tied for seventh in points allowed (20.0).

The pass defense’s success attributes to the playmakers at all three levels and Brandon Staley’s brilliance, who has been putting those players in a position to limit shots down the field through various pressure packages and disguised coverages.

On the flip side, while stronger against the pass, the Chargers have been atrocious versus the run. A combination of lack of physicality in the trenches and missed tackles has led to a unit that’s allowing 170 yards per game, which ranks last in the league.

The Raiders haven’t made much of an impact on the ground due to their high success at airing it out. The team is averaging 95.3 yards per game, which ranks 25th.

Primary running back Joshua Jacobs has missed the last two games with an ankle issue. Despite returning to the practice field in a limited fashion for the first time since sustaining the injury in Week 1, Jacobs is questionable for the matchup.

Even if Jacobs cannot go, it would not be much of a surprise if Peyton Barber and Kenyan Drake receive hefty workloads, given how susceptible L.A. has been against the run.

“They’re built extremely well on offense because they have a complete offense,” Staley said. “They’re very well-coached. They’re a very complete offense, and that’s where they’re the same as Kansas City. They’re dangerous on every down.”

If the Chargers want to keep the Raiders from having offensive success, the pass rush needs to be dialed in against an offensive line that ranks 23rd in pass-block win rate, and the coverage must be sticky to ensure Carr is a non-factor.

5 key things to know about Chargers’ Week 4 opponent: Raiders

Highlighting important things to know about the Chargers’ opponent ahead of Week 4.

The Chargers are back at home, this time in primetime, to take on the Raiders in the second division matchup of the regular season on Monday, Oct. 4 at 5:25 pm PT.

Here are five key things to know about Los Angeles’ opponent ahead of the Week 4 bout:

Outstanding offense

Just when you thought the Chargers’ offense was top-tier, the team will be going up against the cream of the crop. With quarterback Derek Carr playing some of the best football that he has in his career, the Raiders offense ranks first in the league in total offense (471.0 yards per game), first in passing (379.7 ypg), and tied for fifth in points (30.0 points per game).

Wide variety of weapons

With Carr leading the league in passing yards with 1,203, four of his weapons have each surpassed 200 receiving yards: Henry Ruggs, Darren Waller, Hunter Renfrow, and Bryan Edwards. In addition, each touchdown Carr has thrown has been caught by a different receiver.

Middle of the pack defense

With former defensive coordinator Gus Bradley calling the shots in Las Vegas now, his unit currently ranks 14th in total defense (355.7 ypg), 12th in passing (235.3 ypg), 21st in rushing (120.3 ypg), and 14th in points allowed (24.0 ppg).

Maxx on a mission

There’s Myles Garrett, T.J. Watt, and Joey Bosa, but Maxx Crosby is on a mission to stack himself among these top-edge defenders. After racking up 17 sacks in his first two seasons combined, Crosby is just one sack away from becoming the eighth player in franchise history with at least 20 sacks in his first three seasons. In addition, he leads the NFL in quarterback pressures (25).

Familiar faces

Along with Bradley, there will be some others that formerly wore blue and gold. The players are Denzel Perryman, Casey Hayward Jr. and Darius Philon, while the coaches are made up of defensive backs coach Ron Milus, linebackers coach Richard Smith, assistant defensive backs coach Addison Lynch (2018-20), and defensive quality control coach Ryan Milus (2019-20).

Raiders QB on Renfrow: ‘He has surprised me every day’

When Hunter Renfrow joined the Raiders in 2019, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr did a double take and had to make sure that the 5-foot-10, 185-pound guy was actually the wide receiver they drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft. “Very first …

When Hunter Renfrow joined the Raiders in 2019, Raiders quarterback Derek Carr did a double take and had to make sure that the 5-foot-10, 185-pound guy was actually the wide receiver they drafted in the fifth round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

“Very first time I saw Hunter, I had to make sure that was really him, and it was,” Carr told reporters this week.

Since that time, Carr says, Renfrow has surprised him every day with his play on the field.

In his first two seasons with the Raiders in 2019 and 2020, Renfrow racked up a total of 105 receptions for 1,261 yards and six touchdowns.

The Clemson legend began his third season with the Raiders on a good note, catching six passes from Carr for 70 yards in the Raiders’ overtime victory over the Ravens last Monday night.

“He has surprised me every day since (joining the Raiders),” Carr said. “The way he sees the game, the way he plays the game – super tough, unbelievably athletic, quick, agile. I mean, he goes against some of the best corners in the world, and he finds a way to get open and make plays. So, I think the biggest thing I love about him is he sees the game the exact same way that I do. So, he runs some unorthodox-type routes, but I kind of see it that way. I think it makes it harder for defenses, and I think that’s why we’ve just had a great relationship and a great chemistry since he got here.”

Renfrow credits Carr, who has been the Raiders’ quarterback since 2014, for playing a big role in his NFL development and helping him become the professional receiver he is today.

“I love Derek,” Renfrow said to the media. “He’s been big for me in that maturation process. Just all his knowledge, his eight years of knowledge, and being able to convey that to me – it’s becoming simpler and simpler. I’m able to recognize defenses a little better, and the little things that should take place as you play more and get more experience. So, hopefully it continues to slow down. … Really, that’s why we’re all here. That’s why we do our jobs and we try to get better from year to year, no matter what you do, and hopefully I’m able to keep getting better and better.”

Renfrow unfazed by the shots he took Monday night

Although the Las Vegas Raiders have reportedly filed a complaint with the NFL about the dirty hits Hunter Renfrow took in Monday night’s game against the Baltimore Ravens, Renfrow isn’t complaining.

“I didn’t particularly notice anything different than any other game,” the third-year NFL receiver told reporters this week. “You get so caught up in the game and just winning and playing your best that you don’t even notice people, whatever they’re trying to do or anything. So, you’re so focused on doing the job that you just go out there and play.”

According to Vic Tafur of The Athletic, the Raiders put together video of several after-the-play and away-from-the-ball hits and sent that video to the league.

Raiders quarterback Derek Carr is interested to see what becomes of the situation, but said Renfrow is unfazed by the shots he took.

“They had a couple of shots on him where they definitely got the one penalty on him and then should have had another one,” Carr said to the media. “Teams, they have this thought in their head about everybody. So, with a guy that’s his size and in the slot, they’re like, ‘Maybe we just rough him up.’ I don’t know what their plan was, but I can assume, ‘Maybe we’ll get in his head.’ He still came back and made some plays.

“He doesn’t care about that stuff. I think you get to this point in your career, if you’re still here, it doesn’t really bother you, that part of the game. So, it’ll be interesting to see what happens with that. But I know he’s doing all right and ready to play this week.”

Ravens cornerback Marlon Humphrey said Wednesday that he apologized to Renfrow after a second-quarter hit, which did not draw a penalty. Renfrow ran a route near the sideline and then slowed down before being hit above the numbers and knocked off his feet by Humphrey.

“I apologized to [Renfrow] on the field,” Humphrey said. “But, yeah, that was a play I wish I could take back.”

Renfrow finished Monday’s game with six catches on nine targets for 70 yards.

Renfrow says Lawrence looks ‘ready to take the league by storm’

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow remembers what it was like when he was a rookie in the NFL back in 2019, trying to get acclimated to the speed of the game and everything else that comes with being a professional football player. But …

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow remembers what it was like when he was a rookie in the NFL back in 2019, trying to get acclimated to the speed of the game and everything else that comes with being a professional football player.

But Renfrow can’t imagine what his former Clemson teammate Trevor Lawrence is going through entering his first year in the league, being in the limelight with all eyes on him as a No. 1 overall draft pick and the face of the Jacksonville Jaguars franchise.

“It’s tough,” Renfrow said this week on “Out of Bounds” with William Qualkinbush and Kelly Gramlich on WCCP 105.5 FM The Roar.

“Trevor’s just trying to figure out everybody’s names still. I can’t imagine trying to lead a franchise and also have all the commentators talking about your every move. … Everyone’s going to be talking about his every single move – how he drinks his Gatorade on the sideline, how he interacts with the coach, how he interacts with the refs. So, it’s tough.”

As a rookie two years ago with the then-Oakland Raiders, Renfrow recorded 49 receptions for 605 yards and four touchdowns after being selected by the Raiders in the fifth round (149th overall pick) of the 2019 NFL Draft.

For Renfrow, one of the hardest parts of his transition from college football to the NFL was adjusting to the pace in which an NFL game is played.

“It was tough as a receiver just going out there and the speed of the game and how it’s played, the hash marks,” Renfrow said. “What people don’t realize, the NFL game is so much faster. You don’t get 12 possessions a game, you get seven or eight if you’re lucky. So, you have to make the most of those opportunities.”

Renfrow, now entering his third season in the league, was able to catch a little bit of Lawrence and the Jaguars’ nationally televised game against the New Orleans Saints on ESPN’s “Monday Night Football” this past Monday.

Lawrence, who this week was officially named Jacksonville’s starting quarterback, completed 14-of-23 passes for 113 yards and had a passer rating of 73.3 while playing 30 snaps across six drives during the Jags’ 23-21 loss to the Saints.

While some have been critical of Lawrence in the preseason – like CBS Sports, which gave his performance against the Saints a C+ grade – Renfrow liked what he saw from Lawrence on Monday night and believes he is poised to have a big rookie campaign.

“From the little bit I saw (Monday) night, he played incredibly well,” Renfrow said. “Looked confident, looked like he was in control. I think he had a good two-minute drive there at the end, they missed the field goal. But he looked like he was ready to take the league by storm.”

Twitter hate ‘fuels the fire’ for Renfrow

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Hunter Renfrow took Los Angeles Rams cornerback Jalen Ramsey to school last week during the two teams’ joint practice, with the former Clemson Tiger burning the former Florida State Seminole on several occasions according to multiple reports.

In a guest appearance on “Out of Bounds” with William Qualkinbush and Kelly Gramlich on WCCP 105.5. FM The Roar on Tuesday, Renfrow was asked about going up against Ramsey during the joint practice last Wednesday and Renfrow humbly downplayed the success he had against him.

“Jalen obviously is an amazing player, and we played him in college,” Renfrow said. “I think he played boundary corner when we played him then (in 2015). If I remember correctly, he had a big stop on a third or fourth down. But it was fun, practice last week. Obviously he’s a great player. He got the best of me a few times. They play a lot of zone coverage, and so I was able to sneak behind him a few times and score a touchdown or two. So, it was good. It was good for the Raiders and it was good for the Rams to have that joint practice for sure.”

Renfrow’s matchup against Ramsey blew up on Twitter, with some people tweeting as if they were shocked Renfrow got the best of one of the NFL’s top cornerbacks.

Asked about that, Renfrow admitted he hears the haters on social media and it can get annoying, but at the same time it gives him extra motivation.

“Absolutely it fuels the fire, absolutely,” Renfrow said. “But it’s something I’ve dealt with my whole career, especially being a walk-on, I dealt with it. But it kind of fuels the fire. Everyone always blames Saban and Coach Swinney that they’re always getting fuel from places. I guess that’s kind of how I’ve found my fuel is getting on Twitter and everyone can’t believe I got open against Jalen or this so and so DB or whoever, and it definitely adds some fire for sure.”
