Hugh Grant dejectedly saying ‘I play the Oompa Loompa’ in French is too good

Nothing so funny has ever sounded so sad.

The new reimagining of Willy Wonka is hitting theaters this Friday, December 15 as Timothée Chalamet takes on Roald Dahl’s iconic candy character in Wonka. Chalamet will join Johnny Depp and Gene Wilder in the ranks of Wonkas, with the latest being an origin story before he starts his chocolate factory or even hears the name Charlie.

Wonka also stars Olivia Colman (The Crown), Keegan Michael-Key (Key and Peele), Calah Lane (This Is Us) and Hugh Grant (Love Actually).

Grant, who plays one of the memorable orange, song-singing Oompa Loompas, described his role in French during an interview on Wonka‘s press junket. With his morose “Je joue le Oompa Loompa” — which translates to “I play the Oompa Loompa” — Grant set the internet ablaze.

Hugh Grant got roasted for his incredibly awkward Oscars red carpet interview

Yikes, Hugh Grant.

Actor Hugh Grant has never made it hidden that he can be a bit of a prickly pear sometimes.

He made that very clear during an outrageously awkward interview before the 95th Academy Awards with red carpet host Ashley Graham.

Graham interviewed Grant ahead of the ceremony, where he will present an award. Let’s just say that it looked like the Notting Hill star wanted to be anywhere but that brief interview.

As Graham tried her best to keep the interview lively and ask him relevant questions to his recent work, Grant just stonewalled her with short answers and a stark vibe of absolute apathy.

As soon as the interview is over, Grant bolted quickly into the scrum of awards attendees and Graham tossed it over to another segment.

If you felt your skin crawl during that incredibly weird moment, don’t be alarmed. We felt it, too.

Grant is a great actor, but he might want to work on his manners when doing something as innocuous as a red carpet interview at the Oscars.
