UNC basketball offers five-star shooting guard

The UNC basketball program has officially offered this five-star shooting guard in the 2024 class after contacting him last week.

[autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag] and the UNC basketball program are starting to build their 2024 recruiting board as this Summer continues on. After the open contact period began last week, Davis and the staff have been busy contacting 2024 recruits and now they have another offer out.

Five-star shooting guard [autotag]Tre Johnson[/autotag] is the latest prospect to earn an offer from UNC as the Tar Heels officially offered him on Tuesday. The Dallas, Texas native was recently contacted by the Tar Heels last week and now has his official offer, the 16th in his recruitment.

With the offer to Johnson, UNC has now offered four prospects in the 2024 class as Jarin Stevenson, Cam Scott and Ian Jackson previously held offers from UNC.

The 6-foot-5, 180-pound Johnson is ranked No. 3 overall, No. 2 shooting guard, and the No. 1 player in the state of Texas per the 247Sports recruiting rankings.

In addition to UNC, Johnson has offers from Duke, Kansas, Auburn, Baylor, Illinois, Texas, LSU, Tennessee and Oklahoma State among others.

Hubert Davis comments on addition of Pete Nance

UNC basketball head coach Hubert Davis made his first official comments on the transfer addition of Pete Nance on Monday.

The UNC basketball program waited over two months to make an offseason addition but over the weekend made a big splash in the transfer portal by adding Northwestern transfer [autotag]Pete Nance[/autotag].

Nance has one year of eligibility remaining and will be using it at North Carolina.

The 6-foot-10 forward averaged 14.6 points, 6.5 rebounds and 2.7 assists per game last season. He also shot 45.2 percent from three (42-of-93).

UNC head coach Hubert Davis commented on the addition on Monday after the signing was made official.

“To complete our roster, we needed a big-time experienced  player who could contribute right away,” says head coach Hubert Davis. “We found that player in Pete Nance. His character and proven ability, experience and leadership are the perfect fit to our team, program and community. I’m so thankful I will have the opportunity to coach Pete this upcoming season.”

Nance will slide into the spot held last season by Brady Manek. Nance joins Armando Bacot, Caleb Love, RJ Davis and Leaky Black who all return from North Carolina’s starting lineup.

The Tar Heels are projected by numerous outlets to be the preseason No. 1 team heading into next season.

Hubert Davis makes surprise trip to see current UNC commits

UNC basketball coach Hubert Davis visited incoming freshman Seth Trimble and 2023 commit GG Jackson, both playing for USA U18 National team.

While UNC basketball head coach [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag] is in the middle of a key offseason, he continues to show support for future Tar Heels all around the country.

In this case, he even went outside of the country to visit two key future North Carolina prospects.

Team USA Basketball is in the middle of the FIBA Americas Championship down in Tijuana and are fresh off of a semi-final win on Saturday. But, earlier this week, Davis made a visit to watch and support incoming UNC freshman [autotag]Seth Trimble[/autotag] and 2023 UNC commit [autotag]GG Jackson[/autotag], both on the USA roster.

Even though both players are either signed or committed, the visit from Davis made a big impact on Trimble’s mom.

Davis went on to watch Trimble and Jackson help lead Team USA to a dominating win over the Dominican Republic.

Trimble had 11 points and a game-high five assists and five steals off of the bench. Jackson added eight points and four rebounds in the win.

Team USA plays for a Gold Medal on Sunday night against Brazil.

UNC offseason workouts began last week and the expectation is Trimble will make his way to Chapel Hill next week following the end of the FIBA Championships.

2024 top-30 guard looking to set UNC official visit

Cam Scott, a composite five-star prospect in the 2024 class, is looking to make another visit to UNC, this time for an official visit.

June is a busy month for college basketball coaching staffs and that includes June 15 when they can begin contacting class of 2024 recruits directly. This summer is also the first time class of 2024 recruits can go on official visits as rising juniors.

One key 2024 prospect that UNC basketball is involved with is looking to make his way back to Chapel Hill.

[autotag]Cam Scott[/autotag], a five-star prospect in the 247Sports Composite Rankings, has a strong relationship with UNC and has already been on campus a few times for unofficial visits.

According to On3.com, Scott is looking for a return visit to North Carolina, this time for an official visit.

“I’ve been to UNC three times, I think. I am going to try to get an official visit there pretty soon.”

Scott holds offers from North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida State, Clemson, LSU, Georgia, Ole Miss, Tennessee, Texas Tech and more. He is ranked as the No. 1 player in South Carolina in the 247Sports rankings.

UNC’s interest in Scott is clear, beyond the visits he’s made to Chapel Hill, as he is just one of two class of 2024 prospects to hold an offer from the Tar Heels and head coach [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag].

It’s clear that North Carolina will be one of the top teams in Scott’s recruitment until the end.

LOOK: UNC staff joins Brady Manek at NBA workout

Former UNC basketball forward Brady Manek was joined by a few former Tar Heels and current staff members at one of his NBA workouts.

The term ‘Carolina Family’ isn’t just a saying, it’s something the entire program lives by. Once you are part of that family, it sticks with you forever.

And, that is the case with former UNC basketball forward [autotag]Brady Manek[/autotag]. Manek played just one season for North Carolina but quickly become a fan-favorite.

On Friday, he took part in workouts for the Washington Wizards and he had some familiar faces by his side. Head coach [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag], Director of Recruiting [autotag]Pat Sullivan[/autotag] and former Tar Heel great and current Wizards Director of Pro Personnel [autotag]Antwan Jamison[/autotag] were in the house for Manek’s workout.

In his lone season with UNC, Manek averaged 15.1 points, 6.1 rebounds and 1.8 assists while shooting 49.3 percent from the field. He also shot 40.3 percent from the three-point line.

Earlier this week, Manek worked out with the New Orleans Pelicans and Atlanta Hawks.

Manek is projected to go undrafted right now, but good showings in workouts can easily translate to late second-round picks or quick undrafted free-agent signings.

2024 Top-30 big man ‘excited’ about new UNC basketball interest

The UNC basketball program has begun to reach out to 2024 forward James Brown and it has the top-30 prospect excited to learn more.

As the summer recruiting periods begin, new names are already popping up on college basketball recruiting boards. For the UNC basketball program and [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag], there are a few interesting players beginning their recruitment with the Tar Heels.

One of those players is consensus top-30 big man in the 2024 class [autotag]James Brown[/autotag]. The 6-foot-9 center from St. Rita (IL) is ranked No. 27 in the 247Sports Composite rankings and is as high as No. 19 in the Rivals class of 2024 rankings.

Brown already holds offers from DePaul, Florida, Providence, Iowa, Kansas State, LSU, Wisconsin, Illinois and more. He is also invited to the USA Basketball U17 tryouts later this month.

While UNC hasn’t extended an offer, it has begun the relationship building process, according to On3.com.

“I know a lot historically about the program, with their success and their many great players but that’s another school I’m prepared to learn a lot about,” Brown said of UNC. “That’s a school that I like, even outside of their basketball success but educational success as well. That’s something that’s really important to me and my family, athletics, but education as well. I’m really excited to get to know Coach (Hubert) Davis and his staff and the whole Carolina program.”

College coaches can’t contact class of 2024 recruits directly until June 15 so much of the communication up to this point has come through Brown’s coaches.

Up to this point, Brown has visited Illinois, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Wisconsin and Oklahoma.

His recruitment is barely underway, however, and with the likes of North Carolina getting involved, you can expect his recruitment to skyrocket soon.

Another blue blood that has reached out? Duke. Could this eventually be another battle between the two in-state rivals? Time will tell.

Seth Trimble to be a ‘really good fit’ in UNC backcourt next season

UNC basketball incoming freshman Seth Trimble will bring a lot of added value to an already talented backcourt for the Tar Heels next year.

The UNC basketball program has one of the most talented and now experienced starting guards across college basketball heading into the 2022-23 season. But, it’s a freshman coming off of the bench that could play a critical role for the Tar Heels.

Incoming guard [autotag]Seth Trimble[/autotag] is a 6-foot-3 guard who can play on and off of the ball, giving UNC head coach [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag] the versatility to play him with either of [autotag]Caleb Love[/autotag] or [autotag]RJ Davis[/autotag] and keep the theme of two ball handlers on the floor at all times.

Rotations, especially bench minutes in the backcourt, was limited when it came to giving guys like Love and Davis some rest last season. Now with Trimble, you have the luxury to provide those guys with some rest.

247Sports analyst Adam Finkelstein was at USA Basketball U18 tryouts last week and broke down Trimble’s potential fit for the Tar Heels.

“With Seth, I think that the thing it’s going to be really interesting, as he fights for playing time next year, I think he’s a really good fit, particularly next to RJ Davis, like when Caleb Love comes off the floor,” Finkelstein said. “And RJ is a little undersized. He’s a tough shot maker. He’s highly skilled. Now you’ve got this bulldog in Trimble coming in right next to him, who’s gonna be able to guard whoever the toughest cover is on that end of the floor, who’s going to give you that level of physicality to match that smooth skill set of a little bit of a slighter guy in RJ.

“I really think those two are gonna complement each other really, really well regardless of the style of play.”

That physical style of play and his bigger size and length gives Trimble the tools to be a true playmaker on the defensive end of the floor. UNC’s guards already have that ability and really showed that down the stretch of last seasons National Championship appearance run.

“He can push a ball-handler outside of the middle third of the floor,” Finkelstein added. “Right off the beginning, that helps you establish your defense because however you’re going to play, you establish your weak side, you’re able to flood one side of the floor, that’s the thing we don’t talk about in an AAU game. But in this setting, you get an appreciation for it.

“He’s got that perimeter size which is going to make him switchable on the perimeter, he’s going to be able to match up with bigger guards. So not just switching ball screens, but maybe they’re switching equals on the perimeter, like one through three or one through four or whatever, he’s going to be able to do that. Those are things, that again, not to say he didn’t do them in grassroots, but I didn’t get a true appreciation for the totality of his defensive potential.”

Trimble is part of a recruiting class that looks to solidify a rotation that was extremely short for North Carolina a season ago.

While Trimble won’t be expected to play a heavy dose of minutes, his ability to play spot minutes alongside either guard will be critical to allow Davis and Love to keep their legs fresh for late game situations.

Top 10 2023 prospect includes UNC in his final five

2023 five-star prospect Matas Buzelis named his top-5 programs and the UNC basketball program made the list.

A key target for UNC basketball has listed his top-5 schools and included the Tar Heels in the list. 2023 five-star forward[autotag]Matas Buzelis[/autotag] announced his list on Thursday that surely made UNC coaches and fans happy.

His list includes UNC, Kentucky, Florida State, Wake Forest and G-League Ignite.

Buzelis has exploded on the recruiting scene this spring and continues to be a focal point for many top programs around the country. The 6-foot-9, 175-pound small forward out of New Hampshire is a top 10 prospect in that 2023 class.

Buzelis dished on his finalists with On3.com, and made it known that the Tar Heels have many people active in trying to get him to Chapel Hill.

“I just talk to some of their commits, Simeon Wilcher and GG Jackson, most of the time. But I talk with pretty much every coach on staff, Coach Hubert (Davis) a lot. They played great in the tournament, everyone thought they would be a no show, but they played fast and loose and made plays.”

Both UNC basketball 2023 commits [autotag]Simeon Wilcher[/autotag] and [autotag]G.G. Jackson[/autotag] have made it known that they want Buzelis.

That pitch resonates with Buzelis, who also thinks he can play well alongside Jackson in the front court.

“UNC has been on me consistently. I think GG (Jackson) and I would fit really well beside one another. We’re both big wings; I can get it to him, and he can shoot it. We can both run the floor and handle and shoot.”

It has been long perceived as a Kentucky vs UNC matchup for the top-10 wing and it looks like those two will square off for another high-profile prospect once again.

The Tar Heels already hold the No. 2 overall recruiting class in both Rivals and 247Sports team rankings for 2023, so landing a commitment from Buzelis would surely give the Heels the top-rated class.

UNC slips in updated top 25 following NBA draft withdrawal deadline

The UNC basketball program is among the top teams heading into next season but were just surpassed in a recent 247Sports preseason poll.

The UNC basketball program has had one of the best offseasons in college basketball and that comes on the heels of a national runner-up appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

In [autotag]Hubert Davis[/autotag]’ second offseason, a lot of time was spent around his current roster and that work made an impact as the Tar Heels return every key piece to its roster from a season ago that was eligible to return. Outside of Brady Manek, who had exhausted his eligibility, UNC returns its other four starters in [autotag]Armando Bacot[/autotag], [autotag]Caleb Love[/autotag], [autotag]Leaky Black[/autotag] and [autotag]RJ Davis[/autotag].

While they did lose a few pieces from the roster, none were in the rotation following January — when the Tar Heels went on their big second half of the season run.

After sitting atop almost every single ‘way-too-early’ poll for next season, they did slip in the updated 247Sports rankings following the NBA Draft withdrawal date.

A new team took over the top spot and that is Gonzaga. The Bulldogs returned all three starters they were waiting to hear from, including All-American forward Drew Timme.

So, as of now the Tar Heels sit as the No. 2 overall team.

“On Feb. 16, the Tar Heels took a brutal home loss to Pittsburgh. And from Feb. 17 on, North Carolina was among the nation’s best teams, according to statistics website BartTorvik, going 11-2 with the only two losses coming in the ACC Tournament to Virginia Tech and the national title game to Kansas,” 247Sports writer Kevin Flaherty said. “Four starters are back, including the bread-and-butter backcourt duo of Caleb Love and R.J. Davis, and likely preseason ACC Player of the Year Armando Bacot at center. Leaky Black’s defensive versatility was key in that run, and if Puff Johnson can play like he did in the national title game he should fill in at the four nicely. Three top-75 recruits help add depth to a team that wasn’t particularly deep last year, and a step forward from sophomore-to-be Dontrez Styles would help immensely, too.”

UNC finished last season 29-10 overall and 15-5 in the ACC. The Tar Heels went on to defeat Duke in the Final Four, which was the first ever NCAA Tournament matchup for the two programs.

Despite there being nearly six months before the 2022-23 college basketball season begins, UNC basketball will sit near the top of the rankings of nearly every single preseason poll.

North Carolina still has one available scholarship as well and it’s unclear if it will be used through the transfer portal at this point.

Highly coveted 2023 five-star wing dishes on UNC, recruitment

A key 2023 target for the UNC basketball program continues to discuss the Tar Heels in a good light.

While the UNC basketball class of 2023 has its two foundation pieces with five-star forward [autotag]GG Jackson[/autotag] and combo guard [autotag]Simeon Wilcher[/autotag], the Heels are still very active in the recruitment of another top five-star prospect.

[autotag]Matas Buzelis[/autotag] has exploded on the recruiting scene this spring and continues to be a focal point for many top programs around the country. The 6-foot-9, 175-pound small forward out of New Hampshire is a top 10 prospect in that 2023 class and has 13 offers with programs like UNC, Kentucky and Florida State in pursuit of him.

One thing that UNC has going for them are the two current commits as both are actively recruiting the five-star to join them in Chapel Hill.
Buzelis caught up with 247Sports national recruiting analyst Eric Bossi to discuss some of the key programs involved.

“(Hubert Davis) message is that they want me,” Buzelis said of UNC. “I talk to (Simeon Wilcher, GG Jackson) maybe once a week and they say that they want me.”

The Tar Heels will be losing a lot from its roster this season for the 2023-24 year, so reloading with five-star talent and players who can make an impact immediately is important.

Buzelis is someone who can play as a point-forward on the floor with the ball in his hands and allow guys like Wilcher and Jackson to play off of him.

“I think I can bring versatility with how I am able to handle the ball. I can really get everybody involved and I’m big with playmaking ability. I can get to the basket pretty easy; I can get people involved and I can shoot.”

As of right now, the talented wing isn’t focusing on taking any visits until closer to the end of the summer. The Tar Heels continue to be in the lead group for Buzelis, but time will tell if the outward recruitment from its current commits help tip the scale towards UNC.
