St. Louis was one of three teams in the XFL East division to come away with a victory in the league’s opener. The Battlehawks edged the Renegades 15-9 in Dallas. Quarterback Jordan Ta’amu completed 20 of 27 passes for 209 yards and one touchdown. Ta’Amu, who played collegiately at Ole Miss, also rushed for 77 yards on nine carries. Former Florida running back Matt Jones led the team with 21 carries and 85 yards, while Keith Ford scored the lone rushing touchdown. The Battlehawks defense was also stout, holding the Renegades to just 58 yards rushing. Linebacker Terence Garvin was all over the field with eight total tackles (two of those for a loss) and one sack.

In the XFL West division, Houston sits in first place after a 37-17 trouncing of the visiting Los Angeles Wildcats.  After being down 17-12 late in the third quarter, the Roughnecks took the lead on a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback P.J. Walker to wide receiver Sam Mobley. That series was part of a 25-0 run for head coach June Jones. It’s no secret that Jones’ offenses like to air the ball out. Walker finished the day 23 of 38 for 272 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception. If St. Louis wants to stay in the game, it starts with limiting Walker and the passing game.

Tampa Bay looked to be firing on all cylinders behind quarterback Aaron Murray to begin last weekend’s game against the New York Guardians. However, Murray’s interception in the end zone proved to be a sign of what would happen the rest of the game in a 23-3 loss. Murray was sacked three times and completed less than half of his passes. However, on the positive side, Tampa Bay completed 47 percent of its third-down conversions and had four trips into the red zone. It was three turnovers that proved to be a killer.

Seattle may have had more success on offense than Tampa Bay, but it still took a 31-19 loss to the DC Defenders. Quarterback Brandon Silvers went 21-for-40 with 217 yards passing and three touchdowns, but he did have two interceptions. Kenneth Farrow and Ja’Quan Gardner combined for 97 yards on 16 carries. It will be interesting to see if the two split time again on Saturday or if the coaches choose to give one of the running backs more snaps. Wide receiver Austin Proehl had five catches for 88 yards and two touchdowns, including a 57-yard catch-and-run.

Watch Vipers vs. Guardians Live Online.

During the first iteration of the XFL, New York’s franchise played at Giants Stadium. Since then, MetLife Stadium was erected in place of that venue, and now the New York Guardians find it as their home in the new XFL. New York will host the Tampa Bay Vipers in the first week of the 2020 XFL season, with both teams looking to establish an identity in the early stage of the season.

Tampa Bay is coached by former NFL head coach Marc Trestman, who built his reputation as an offensive mind in the Canadian Football League before being hired to lead the Chicago Bears. The Vipers will hope that Trestman’s offensive coaching prowess will lead to a strong season from quarterback Aaron Murray, who is best known for his time as the signal caller for the Georgia Bulldogs. Murray has spent time in NFL huddles as well and hopes to parlay that experience into success in the XFL.

The New York Guardians are also led by an offensive mind, as former New York Giants offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride is the head man for the team that plays in the same stadium as the Giants. The Guardians will have former Penn State and Oakland Raiders quarterback Matt McGloin as their starter, but they also have Luis Perez in their quarterback room. Perez was one of the breakout stars of the Alliance of American Football, and this team could be well equipped to take advantage of the new multiple forward pass rule that the XFL will put into play.
