Texans sign former Miami OL D.J. Scaife

The Houston Texans have signed former Miami Hurricanes offensive lineman D.J. Scaife.

The Houston Texans have at least compensated for the loss of center Scott Quessenberry on the roster.

Houston announced Friday they have signed undrafted free agent offensive lineman D.J. Scaife.

The former Miami product has versatility as both a guard and a tackle, mostly on the right side. Scaife started 32 games at right tackle and another 20 at right guard during his tenure with the Hurricanes.

The Miami Dolphins signed Scaife after the draft, and released the 6-4, 314-pounder after rookie minicamp. Scaife also spent time with the Green Bay Packers this offseason.

The Texans also announced they have placed Quessenberry on injured reserve.

Report: Texans trading with Buccaneers for guard Shaq Mason

The Houston Texans are trading with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for guard Shaq Mason, who also used to play for the New England Patriots.

The Houston Texans are acquiring another former New England Patriots player.

According to Aaron Wilson from KPRC-TV, the Texans are working out a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to obtain guard Shaq Mason.

Mason was a former Patriots 2015 fifth-round pick, and Texans general manager Nick Caserio was New England’s director of player personnel from 2008-20.

With the Buccaneers, Mason started all 17 games as Tampa Bay managed to win the NFC South with an 8-9 record in what was Tom Brady’s swan song.

Prior to joining the Patriots, Mason started in 98 of his 103 games active from 2015-21, winning two Super Bowls at the end of the 2016 and 2018 campaigns.

The terms to acquire Mason are reportedly a Texans sixth-round pick for the guard and also the Buccaneers’ seventh-round selection.

Texans fortify offensive line in Round 1 of College Sports Wire mock draft

The Houston Texans add Florida G O’Cyrus Torrence to bolster their offensive line in the latest College Sports Wire mock draft.

Some mock drafts have the Houston Texans using their No. 12 overall pick in Round 1 to take a receiver, cornerback, or even edge rusher. There are just some positions that don’t make sense, such as running back, linebacker, or safety.

According to Patrick Conn from the College Sports Wire, who released the third version of his mock draft, one position that should still be on the table for the Texans at No. 12 overall is offensive line. Houston uses that pick to take Florida guard O’Cyrus Torrence after grabbing Alabama quarterback Bryce Young with their No. 2 overall pick in Round 1.

With their first pick, the Houston Texans went the route of quarterback. Using a pick from the [Cleveland Browns] trade, the team can address protecting their investment with the best interior lineman in the draft.

Houston would have an immensely fortified offensive line with Torrence. Even if just for a season, the Texans’ bookends would be Pro Bowler Laremy Tunsil and former first-rounder Tytus Howard. 2022 first-rounder Kenyon Green would man the left guard spot, and presumably Torrence would be next to Howard. All the Texans would have to do is solve the center position, which they ostensibly have with Scott Quessenberry, who made 16 starts at center following the sudden retirement of Justin Britt after Week 1.

The Texans would have quality investments up front and the dividends would be evident somewhere on offense. Surely the collection of four first-rounders would be able to clear running lanes for running back Dameon Pierce, or provide adequate protection for Young.

Torrence would give Houston position flex as well in case they wanted to let Howard walk at the end of the 2023 campaign, when his contract expires. Green has the ability to kick out to tackle, and could take over for Howard. The Texans would still have premium talent along the interior with Torrence in such a scenario.

Texans release G Max Scharping

The Houston Texans have released former 2019 second-round guard Max Scharping.

The Houston Texans have all but one of their 2019 NFL draft class remaining.

According to Aaron Wilson from the Pro Football Network, the Texans have released former second-round pick Max Scharping. The guard was in a battle for playing time as the Texans signed former Jacksonville Jaguars guard A.J. Cann in the offseason. Houston also bolstered their interior offensive line by drafting Texas A&M product Kenyon Green in the first round.

With the Texans going with a youth movement in Green and familiarity as Cann previously played under current offensive line coach George Warhop, who was with the Jaguars from 2019-21.

G A.J. Cann wants Texans run game to ‘pop a hundred every single game’

Houston Texans guard A.J. Cann hopes the run game can crest 100 yards rush each game, but knows it is a tough goal to reach in the NFL.

The Houston Texans’ run game was putrid in 2021.

The Texans’ were at the bottom of the league with 3.4 yards per carry and 83.6 rushing yards per game. Not only did Houston have just one performance where a back went over 100 yards rushing, but there were only three games where the team went over 100 rushing yards.

A.J. Cann wants to change that. The former Jacksonville Jaguars guard knows that churning yards in the NFL is difficult, but his expectations are lofty.

“You know, that’s hard to call right now but of course we want to pop a hundred every single game,” Cann told reporters after the sixth day of training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center Saturday.

Cann isn’t naive, not with 95 games played for the Jaguars from 2015-21. The former 2015 third-round pick from South Carolina is well aware that teams can focus their resources to take away a run game.

“That’s what we looking to do as an offensive line, as an offense, as a team, of course we want to go over a hundred every game but these are the teams that are going to be trying to watch film and compete with us as much as we compete with them,” said Cann. “That’s a challenge and that’s what we want to get. It’s a tough league but trust me we want to pop a hundred every game.”

Burkhead had Houston’s only 100-yard rushing game for a back in 2021 in a 41-29 Week 16 win over the Los Angeles Chargers. The Texans appeared to have a strong run game to start the season as they compiled 160 in the 37-22 win over the Jaguars at NRG Stadium. The Texans also had a 100-yard game against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 6 with a 31-3 loss at Lucas Oil Stadium.

Texans coach Lovie Smith says G Kenyon Green has had ‘normal rookie progression’

Houston Texans coach Lovie Smith says that first-round offensive lineman Kenyon Green is progressing normally.

The Houston Texans solidified two positions with the selection of Texas A&M guard Kenyon Green.

The Texans solved the question of what happens to former 2019 first-rounder Tytus Howard, who had been bouncing inside and out. The Alabama State product will play at right tackle, a position where he has had success throughout his 37 games as a pro.

The Texans also found a reliable offensive lineman to play inside in Green. The former Humble Atascocita High School product will take over one of the guard spots and give the Texans adequate bulk upfront to kickstart their run game and provide adequate protection for second-year quarterback Davis Mills.

According to coach Lovie Smith, who met with reporters after the fourth day of training camp practice Tuesday at Houston Methodist Training Center, Green is coming along at the pace rookies typically do.

“I would say normal rookie progression,” said Smith. “He needs to get in there. First, it’s about getting in football playing conditions. He’s working on that, but now we’ll continue to let him go with the ones, too. We know he’s going to play for us. It’s just about getting him looks, as many looks as we possibly can and that’s what we’re doing.”

The Texans got their first padded work in on Monday in their third practice of training camp. Houston has seven more practices until they get to hit other players on Aug. 13 in the preseason opener at the New Orleans Saints.

WATCH: Kenyon Green takes the field at Texans training camp

Houston Texans rookie guard Kenyon Green took to the practice field on the first day of training camp.

Houston Texans first-round offensive lineman Kenyon Green took the practice field for the first day of training camp at Houston Methodist Training Center Friday.

Green, a product of nearby Atascocita High School, is expected to take over a guard spot despite playing his final year at Texas A&M at tackle. Nevertheless the move inside allows for former 2019 first-round pick Tytus Howard to kick out to right tackle permanently.

With Green, a two-time All-American with the Aggies, moving inside, it will beef up the Texans’ run game, which was last in the league in yards per carry (3.4) and yards per game (83.6).

Texans sign former Jaguars G Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms

The Houston Texans have brought in former Jacksonville Jaguars guard Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms.

The Houston Texans are shoring up their interior offensive line depth with a familiar face.

The Texans signed former Jacksonville Jaguars guard Tre’Vour Wallace-Simms Monday.

Wallace-Simms has familiarity with Texans offensive line coach George Warhop, who was the offensive line coach with the Jaguars from 2019-21.

The Jaguars signed the 6-5, 330-pound guard as an undrafted free agent from Missouri in 2020. Wallace-Simms had five game day activations for Jacksonville in his two seasons, but never started any games. The East St. Louis, Illi., product saw a total of 17 offensive snaps and 12 special teams snaps in his two seasons with the Jaguars.

The Texans signed another Warhop player and former Jaguar at the start of free agency in guard A.J. Cann.

Houston recently waived offensive lineman Carson Green, who played college ball at Texas A&M.
