Will Alabama HC Nick Saban’s retirement become Texas A&M’s gain?

The breaking news concerning Alabama HC Nick Saban’s retirement could spur more de-commitments and transfer portal additions this month.

On Wednesday, Jan. 10, the college football world stood still as ESPN’s Chris Low reported that legendary Alabama head coach Nick Saban will retire ahead of the 2024 season after winning seven national titles, including six with the Crimson Tide and one during his tenure with LSU.

While most of the coverage will focus on Saban’s eventual replacement, Texas A&M and new head coach Mike Elko could greatly benefit from the immediate repercussions as a bevy of current Alabama players and 2025/2025 commits will likely enter the transfer portal or de-commit from the program, as roster members will have 30 days to make a portal decision due to the announcement.

Even more important, new Texas A&M wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins, who served under Saban and Tide from 2019-2023, has plenty of lasting connections to the program, and while more news is scheduled to drop, 2024 five-star WR Ryan Williams has already de-committed from Alabama. Here are a couple of current Crimson Tide players to keep an eye on going forward:

  • Sophomore linebacker Jihaad Campbell (66 tackles in 2023)
  • Freshman wide receiver Jalen Hale (5 receptions, 148 yards, 1 TD in 2023)

2025 5-Star WR and Alabama commit ‘strongly considering’ visiting Texas A&M

According to Rivals’ Adam Gorney, 2025 5-star WR and Alabama commit Jaime Ffrench is still considering a visit to Texas A&M.

Over the next six months, Texas A&M’s 2025 recruiting class will begin to take shape. New head coach Mike Elko has assembled an impressive staff with a highly successful recruiting background, including former Alabama wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins.

This week, Rivals’ Adam Gorney revealed that 2025 five-star wide receiver and Alabama commit Jaime Ffrench is reportedly still considering a visit to Texas A&M, as Wiggins, who recently accepted the Aggies offer on Jan. 2, recruited Ffrench to the Crimson Tide.

According to Rivals, Ffrench is currently positioned as the 18th-ranked player in the class, the 3rd-ranked wide receiver, and the 4th-ranked player in Florida, as the Jacksonville (FL) native recorded 1,247 receiving yards and 14 total touchdowns during his 2023 junior season at Mandarin High School.

Without a single signee in the 2025 cycle, potentially flipping a player of Ffrench’s caliber would provide a significant momentum boost heading into the summer and give Elko his first commit outside of the transfer portal ahead of his inaugural 2024 season next fall.

Texas A&M offensive coordinator and QBs coach Collin Klein formally bids adieu to Kansas State

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when you’ve been in one place for 14 of the last 16 years, but Klein did exactly that on Friday night.

Saying goodbye is never easy, especially when you’ve been in one place for 14 of the last 16 years.

Texas A&M co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Collin Klein formally bid adieu to Kansas State on Friday night with a post on X.

“Dear Wildcat family,

“The last 14 years have been beyond special. I thank God every day for bringing me to Kansas State. The relationships, memories, lessons, challenges and joys are too many to count. From an 18-year-old not knowing which way was up, to meeting my beautiful wife Shalin, to winning two Big 12 Championships, it has been a heck of a ride. K-State didn’t just give me a job but gave me a mission. That mission of taking care of people, not letting anyone put limitations on what you can accomplish and being the toughest-minded competitor out there is what K-State is all about. I hope I was able to impart this to every player I had the privilege to work with.

“A special thank you to every team and every player I was fortunate enough to coach. Thank you to my fellow coaches and coworkers. It never felt like we worked because we all cared about the mission and each other. Thank you to the administration of John Currie and Gene Taylor for their leadership in setting the standard of excellence for K-State Athletics. I am so fortunate to have worked under two of the best head coaches to ever do it! Thank you to coach Snyder who gave me my first opportunity in coaching and instilled the mental toughness and discipline needed to be excellent every day. Thank you to coach Klieman who gave me an opportunity to stay at K-State and will forever be a dear mentor and friend.

“There is never a perfect time for change and growth but I do feel this is the time. With K-State it is never goodbye, merely see you later! We love you K-State family and we will always bleed purple!

Alabama wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins hired to same role at Texas A&M

Alabama wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins has been hired away as Texas A&M’s wide receivers coach. The news comes as a surprise considering that Wiggins is leaving to take the same role in the same conference.

According to TexAgs, Alabama wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins has accepted a job as Texas A&M’s wide receivers coach. This comes as somewhat of a surprise considering Wiggins is leaving Tuscaloosa to take over in the same capacity in College Station.

Wiggins will join Mike Elko’s staff at Texas A&M. The two have never coached on the same coaching staff leading up to now.

Wiggins spent the past five seasons in Tuscaloosa as Alabama’s wide receivers coach. The California native helped recruit several key prospects over the years like Jalen Hale, Ryan Williams, and Julian Sayin.

It goes without saying that his vacancy will be one that needs to be filled in a timely manner. The Crimson Tide cannot afford to lose 2024 five-star wide receiver Ryan Williams to another school. Wiggins was Williams’ primary recruiter.

This news comes at an interesting time given all things considered. Alabama just returned to Tuscaloosa today and the news has already broke that Wiggins is departing for College Station. Nonetheless, it will be interesting to see which direction Nick Saban chooses to go with an assistant coach leaving to join another SEC coaching staff.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow the latest news regarding the Alabama football program.

Why Holmon Wiggins and Ra’Shaad Samples would both be good hires for Texas WR coach

Can Texas really go wrong with Holmon Wiggins or Ra’Shaad Samples?

Holmon Wiggins are Ra’Shaad Samples each are linked as top targets for the Texas wide receiver coach opening. In my estimation, both would be huge wins for Texas. Continue reading “Why Holmon Wiggins and Ra’Shaad Samples would both be good hires for Texas WR coach”

REPORT: Texas contacts Alabama WR coach Holmon Wiggins

Steve Sarkisian has made contact with Alabama WR coach Holmon Wiggins.

The Texas Longhorns might have found their top target for their wide receiver coaching vacancy. According to a report, Steve Sarkisian has made contact with Alabama’s Holmon Wiggins about the vacancy.

Wiggins worked with Sarkisian while at Alabama. While there, the two coaches helped Devonta Smith win a Heisman Trophy at wide receiver.

Texas is in search of a coach to replace Brennan Marion who manned the post for a season before leaving for UNLV. It will be difficult for the team to find a comparable coach at the position, but Wiggins would fit the bill.

The Alabama receivers coach might have greener pastures in Austin, after his receiver room struggled in 2022. JoJo Earle headlines the Alabama receivers who entered the transfer portal at season’s end.

Whoever takes the job is set for the opportunity to coach Isaiah Neyor, Xavier Worthy, Jordan Whittington and a host of talented young receivers.

Alabama lands massive commitment from 2023 WR Jalen Hale

2023 wide receiver Jalen Hale announced his commitment to Alabama on Wednesday.

Alabama has been able to sustain success on the recruiting trail over the last few months. That success carried over till now as another promising recruit jumped on board with the Tide. On Wednesday, 2023 four-star wide receiver Jalen Hale announced that he was committed to Alabama. The Texas native chose the Tide over other schools like Texas, Texas A&M, and Georgia.

Hale is the third wide receiver to commit in Alabama’s 2023 recruiting class. He is listed at 6-foot-1 and 185 pounds, according to 247Sports. Hale is regarded as the No. 74 overall recruit in the nation by 247Sports’ recruiting rankings.

In three seasons at Longview High School, Hale has hauled in 96 receptions for 2,017 receiving yards and 27 receiving touchdowns. He flashes enough athleticism and speed to compete early and often for the Tide. This is a big recruiting win for wide receivers coach [autotag]Holmon Wiggins[/autotag].

2023 ATH Jacobe Johnson down to five schools, commitment coming soon

Alabama listed in 2023 ATH Jacobe Johnson’s top five. He will announce his commitment on August 13.

Alabama has already hauled in one 2023 recruit from Oklahoma in four-star wide receiver Cole Adams. Adams. Another Oklahoma-based recruiting target for the Alabama coaching staff is Jacobe Johnson. On Wednesday, he announced that he was down to five schools and a commitment date of August 13.

Alabama is likely on the outside looking in for the native of Mustang, Oklahoma at this point in his recruiting. As it stands, Oklahoma has a sizable lead according to On3’s RPM. The Sooners are favored to land Johnson at 86.5% likelihood. The Crimson Tide is predicted as the second favorite to land him at 4.6%.

The two-sport athlete has taken four official visits so far. One of the visits that he took was to Alabama. It is looking like he will end up in Norman, but the Crimson Tide still has over a week to make up some ground in his recruitment. Wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins has been able to land commitments Malik Benson along with Cole Adams. Ideally, the Crimson Tide would like to bring in up to four wide receivers in the class.

The coaching staff has expressed interest in several different receivers in Jaren Hamilton and Michigan State commit Demetrius Bell. Johnson is a long shot at this point, but it isn’t out of the realm of possibility. We will have to wait and see what Johnson decides to do for his commitment.

2023 WR target receives prediction in favor of Alabama

Alabama appears to be trending for 2023 four-star wide receiver Jalen Hale. He has a top three of Alabama, Georgia, and Texas.

Alabama has been seen as an outsider in the recruitment of 2023 four-star wide receiver Jalen Hale. However, one recruiting insider doesn’t believe that to be the case. On Monday, On3 national recruiting analyst Jeremy Johnson put in a prediction for Hale to land at Alabama. Alabama fans may wonder why this is so important.

The reason why is because Hale has been a priority target for Alabama since receiving an offer in March. The native of Texas took an unofficial visit to Alabama this weekend. That is eye-opening considering that he is heavily favored by many to commit to Texas. While the Crimson Tide held their cookout this past weekend, the Longhorns did the same. Rather than being in Austin, Hale spent the weekend in Tuscaloosa.

On3’s RPM heavily favors the Longhorns at 75.3%. That is liable to change in the coming months as Hale is likely taking an official visit to Alabama in September. He has a top three in Georgia, Texas, and Alabama. As of right now, it appears to be a two-team race between Alabama and Texas.

Alabama has already landed two commitments at the wide receiver position in four-star prospects Malik Benson and Cole Adams. It doesn’t stop there, however. Wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins has emphasized the need to add another wide receiver to the Tide’s 2023 recruiting class. Hale is one of the wide receivers that should garner attention from the Alabama faithful. Several other wide receiver targets to keep an eye on are Michigan State commit Demetrius Bell and Jaren Hamilton. All three of Hale, Bell, and Hamilton were in Tuscaloosa this past weekend for the July cookout.

Roll Tide Wire will continue to follow Hale’s recruitment as well as other Alabama football recruiting news.

Alabama Recruiting: Tide lands in top three for 2023 WR Aidan Mizell

Alabama was named to 2023 wide receiver Aidan Mizell’s top three on Tuesday. Mizell is set to announce his commitment on July 29.

Alabama recently gained two commitments from wide receivers, and now there’s a chance to earn another.  Wide receivers coach Holmon Wiggins has done a phenomenal job recruiting. Aidan Mizell, a 2023 wide receiver prospect, released his top three schools on Twitter.

Along with listing his top three schools, Mizell also announced that he would make his commitment official on July 29. When speaking with On3’s Hayes Fawcett about his top three schools, here is what Mizell said about Alabama:

“Bama has the greatest coach of all time and produces talent every year,” Mizell said. “When talking to the players at Bama they have one goal, and it’s to make it to the league. That’s why I love Bama.”

Last season, he hauled in 47 receptions for 1,003 receiving yards and 18 touchdowns. Mizell also runs for his school’s track team. His mother, Ebony, was an All-American sprinter at Florida. The Florida native certainly possesses the raw speed and athleticism to make an early contribution at the next level.
