UFC’s Ailin Perez wants to send ‘friend’ Holly Holm into retirement

Ailin Perez has her sights set on a former champion.

[autotag]Ailin Perez[/autotag] has her sights set on a former champion.

Winner of her past three in a row – most recently a unanimous decision over Joselyne Edwards at UFC 302 in June, Perez (10-2 MMA, 3-1 UFC) expressed interest in facing Kayla Harrison.

But now Perez has shifted her attention to Harrison’s most recent opponent, [autotag]Holly Holm[/autotag] (15-7 MMA, 8-7 UFC), who is coming off a submission loss to the two-time PFL champion at UFC 300 in April.

“Holly Holm, you are my friend. As my friend, I am happy to send you to retirement to help you realize that you can get hurt if you keep fighting in UFC. Mick Maynard, let me help my friend go to retirement.”

Holm, 42, has lost three of her past four fights. After her loss to Harrison, UFC CEO Dana White said he’d like to see Holm retire. However, in a recent interview with MMA Junkie, Holm shut down White’s retirement suggestion.

“I’m ready to go whenever,” Holm said. “I definitely am not ready to be done fighting. I know I’m still healthy and capable. I’m just mad that I haven’t performed.”

‘Pissed off’ Holly Holm won’t take Dana White’s retirement suggestion: ‘I definitely am not ready to be done’

Holly Holm has no intention of heeding UFC boss Dana White’s retirement suggestion following her loss to Kayla Harrison.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Holly Holm[/autotag] has no intention of heeding UFC CEO [autotag]Dana White[/autotag]’s retirement suggestion following her loss to Kayla Harrison.

Holm (15-7 MMA, 8-7 UFC) was frustrated with her performance in a second-round submission defeat to Harrison at UFC 300 in April. It was a key loss in the former UFC women’s bantamweight champ’s neverending pursuit to reclaim the belt, and afterward White suggested she hang up the gloves.

Holm, 42, won’t be doing that, though. She is bothered by the way the Harrison fight unfolded and is determined to get that bad taste out of her mouth.

“I’m pissed off,” Holm told MMA Junkie on Friday at UFC X Radio Row. “I’ve lost a lot of sleep over it because I just know I’m capable of more than what I performed. That’s how it goes. You can’t go back and change it. You’ve got to suck it up, own it, and keep grinding, and move forward.

“I’m ready to go whenever. I definitely am not ready to be done fighting. I know I’m still healthy and capable. I’m just mad that I haven’t performed.”

Holm, No. 7 in the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMA Junkie women’s bantamweight rankings, said she has no preference in opponent for her next fight, and, as usual, is open to taking the toughest matchup possible to thrust herself upward in the division.

“I’m just training,” Holm said. “That’s all I can do. Just take on day at a time. Tomorrow’s never promised in life or in sport. I’m just training and I’ll always choose to be positive and driven in my life and I’ll just see what tomorrow brings.”

Holly Holm dismisses Ronda Rousey’s concussion claim prior to UFC 193 fight: ‘I was the better fighter that night’

Holly Holm respectfully isn’t putting too much stock in Ronda Rousey’s recent admission.

LAS VEGAS – [autotag]Holly Holm[/autotag] respectfully isn’t putting too much stock in [autotag]Ronda Rousey[/autotag]’s recent comments about their 2015 fight.

Holm scored a massive upset knockout of the previously unbeaten Rousey to claim the women’s bantamweight title at UFC 193. Rousey recently revealed she entered the fight concussed prior to even suffering the head-kick knockout.

When Holm was asked to react to Rousey’s comments, the former champion simply said she outperformed her on the night.

“I say this all out of respect,” Holm told MMA Junkie and other reporters at Wednesday’s UFC 300 media day. “In order to have a big upset like that fight was, you have to have a dominant champion. So, without her being so dominant then I couldn’t have been able to have such an upset. With that being said, I was the better fighter. I was the better fighter that night, and every fighter at this point, if you’ve made a career of fighting, you’ve had a concussion at some point.

“You go back and look at some of my boxing fights and some of the things that I’ve done, I’ve definitely had some concussions. I’ll never sit here and use that as an excuse for any loss. I think that it’s probably just hard for her to really want to, like, maybe admit that I was just the better fighter. Was she so dominant and a good champion? One hundred percent. I give her that, but she wasn’t better than me and especially that night.”

Holm (15-6 MMA, 8-6 UFC) welcomes Kayla Harrison (16-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC) to the octagon in a bantamweight bout Saturday at UFC 300 (pay-per-view, ESPN, ESPN+), which takes place at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
