Former Tennessee baseball pitcher advances to the 2024 College World Series.

Former Tennessee pitcher Hollis Fanning advanced to the 2024 College World Series with North Carolina State on Monday.

Fanning transferred to the Wolfpack following the 2023 season. He pitched for Tennessee from 2021-23.

Fanning (2-1) recorded a 7.40 ERA for No. 10 overall seed North Carolina State (38-21, 19-11 ACC).

He has appeared in 15 games, including one start. Fanning has pitched 17.0 innings and allowed 26 hits, 15 runs (14 earned), four walks, six doubles, one triple and four home runs. Opponents have recorded a .361 batting average against him.

Fanning played in the College World Series with the Vols in 2021 and 2023.

The Wolfpack will play No. 2 overall seed Kentucky (45-14, 22-8 SEC) Saturday at 2 p.m. EDT at Charles Schwab Field Omaha in Omaha, Nebraska.

The Wildcats are playing in its first College World Series in program history.

Tennessee junior pitcher Hollis Fanning has entered the NCAA transfer portal.

The 6-foot-8, 230-pound Fanning (0-0) appeared in 24 games, including one start, from 2021-23 at Tennessee. He recorded 29 strikeouts and a 2.21 ERA with the Vols.

Fanning earned 2022 spring SEC academic honor roll and 2020-21 SEC first-year academic honor roll honors.

Fanning came to the Vols from Tullahoma High School in Tullahoma, Tennessee.

Tennessee advanced to the College World Series in 2023 for the second time in three seasons. The Vols won a game in the College World Series for the first time since 2001.

Opening day for Tennessee baseball is Friday.

The Vols will play in the 2023 MLB Desert Invitational in Arizona Feb. 17-19. The MLB Desert Invitational field will consist of Tennessee, Arizona, Fresno State, Grand CanyonMichigan State and San Diego.

The 2023 season will be Tennessee’s sixth under head coach Tony Vitello. Vitello has compiled a 191–77 (71–49 SEC) record as the Vols’ head coach.

Tennessee won the Southeastern Conference East division for the second consecutive season, the league regular-season and tournament championships in 2022.

The Vols were a No. 1 overall national seed in the NCAA Tournament, winning the Knoxville regional and advancing to the Knoxville super regional.

Tennessee was ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports baseball coaches poll for 10 consecutive weeks (March 28-May 30) during the 2022 season.

Fanning earned a win July 2 against the Sonoma Stompers. He pitched seven innings, recording four strikeouts, while surrendering five hits, one walk and zero runs.

Walnut Creek defeated Sonoma, 6-0.

Fanning appeared in five games for the Vols during the 2022 season.

He made his first career start against Tennessee Tech on Feb. 22 before the contest was canceled due to rain. The Vols led Tennessee Tech, 5-4, in the top of the fifth inning with two outs before the contest was postponed and later canceled.

Tennessee sophomore pitcher Hollis Fanning started Saturday for the Walnut Creek Crawdads of the California Collegiate League.

Fanning pitched eight innings, totaling 98 pitches with 73 strikes, against the Arroyo Seco Saints. He recorded five strikeouts, while surrendering three earned runs, one walk and nine hits, in Walnut Creek’s 5-4 victory.
