Chiefs, Panthers fans react to Carolina hiring Brandt Tillis as Executive VP of Football Operations

Fans on Twitter reacted to the #Panthers’ hiring of former #Chiefs executive Brandt Tillis on Wednesday afternoon.

On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs lost a key piece of their front office staff when the Carolina Panthers hired long-time executive Brandt Tillis to be their Executive Vice President of Football Operations.

Offseason departures like this are common, especially for teams that have found as much success as the Chiefs have in recent seasons. The Panthers are in the midst of what seems to be a never-ending rebuild and brought in Tillis for his expertise and championship pedigree as Carolina looks to get its franchise back on the right track.

While the move may not prove to be a crushing blow for Kansas City, it may prove instrumental in the Panthers’ rebuild in the coming years.

Fans on social media were quick to offer their take on the news of Tillis’ move shortly after Carolina announced his signing on Wednesday afternoon.

Auburn announces defensive staff hires

Every day we shufflin.

Auburn will have a new man running the defense next season.

On Saturday, the Tigers announced that Jeff Schmedding has been promoted to defensive coordinator as Derek Mason stepped down.

“First and foremost, I want to thank Coach Mason for his leadership as our defensive coordinator this past season and wish nothing but the best for him on his next steps,” Bryan Harsin said. “The decision to leave Auburn was not an easy one for him, and he will always be a part of the Auburn family.

“Coach Schmedding was at Coach Mason’s side day after day getting our defense prepared and ready. He is a tremendous defensive coach, who has coordinated championship defenses and is a proven winner. I know our defense will take the next steps forward under Coach Schmedding’s leadership.”

The Tigers also announced the hiring of Jimmy Brumbaugh as the new defensive line coach.

“As we worked through this entire process, we were able to zero in and find two defensive assistant coaches who fit the coaching criteria and expectations we must have,” Harsin said. “Jimmy Brumbaugh is an Auburn Man with an extensive resume that includes several SEC schools and a long list of players he’s developed who have gone on to play in the NFL. He will be a veteran presence and great teacher of the game for our men up front.”

Christian Robinson will be coming aboard as the linebackers coach and defensive run game coordinator.

“A coach who was literally raised with SEC football,” Harsin said. “Played in this league and has coached the last seven years at four different SEC programs. He’s a humble and hungry coach that we can’t wait to get around our backers and the rest of the defense.”

Zac Etheridge will now serve as the defensive backs coach and recruiting coordinator. He was in charge of the cornerbacks in 2021. Bert Watts has added the title of associate head coach and will continue as the special teams coordinator and coach of the edge linebackers.

Brian Kelly trying to bring Marcus Freeman to LSU

What do you do if you’re Jack Swarbrick?

Brian Kelly’s plane to Baton Rouge doesn’t land until Tuesday afternoon but he’s already trying to take a very key piece of Notre Dame’s football program with him to LSU.

Defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman, who plenty of players and fans alike want to be the next Notre Dame head coach, seems to be main priority for Kelly to take with him to LSU according to Pete Sampson of The Athletic.  Sampson was part of The Athletic report on Monday night that originally linked Kelly to LSU and on Tuesday morning Sampson shared the following on Twitter:

This is not at all surprising as Freeman appears to be a star in the making both in-game and as a recruiter.

Does this expedite Jack Swarbrick’s plan in hiring the next head coach?

Does it make Freeman more likely to be that hire?

Jack Swarbrick is a smart guy and had to have seen this coming from Kelly as soon as he knew he was leaving.

What I think this means is that we’ll know very soon if Freeman is a legitimate candidate for the head coach position or not and the only hire that I could possibly imagine him staying at Notre Dame with is if it were his old boss Luke Fickell from Cincinnati.

The pursuit of Freeman is hardly surprising but how Swarbrick and Notre Dame respond will have a massive impact on the future of the football program.

A look at the diversity within the Seahawks and Cardinals organizations

A look at the diversity within the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals organizations, analyzing the coaches, general managers and players.

Recently NFL commissioner Roger Goodell made a statement condemning racism and the systemic oppression of Black people, which many thought was too little, too late. While the commissioner wants people to believe the NFL is quite diverse, studies show otherwise. Below is a comparison of the diversity that exists in the Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals organizations, which we decided to run in honor of Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is a holiday celebrated on June 19 throughout the United States as the day the last remaining slaves, located in Texas, were actually emancipated. Many companies are now allowing employees the day off to honor the holiday. Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill recently announced that Juneteenth would be a permanent paid team holiday for Arizona, in order for the franchise to “reflect on the history of civil rights in the United States and how we can all work together for a much better future.” The Seahawks will be observing the day off as well.

Second of all, I will analyze the diversity of the Cardinals and Seahawks starting from 2013 when the NFL first started publishing the NFL Diversity and Inclusion Report. The three categories we will look at will be: Players, General Managers, and Head Coaches.

The Seattle Seahawks have officially announced the hiring of Alonzo Highsmith to a full-time scouting role after serving as a consultant.

The Seattle Seahawks have officially announced the hiring of Alonzo Highsmith to a full-time scouting role. Highsmith was added to the staff as a consultant earlier in the offseason.

A former NFL running back, Highsmith was most recently in Cleveland, where he served as the vice president of personnel for the Browns from 2018-2019. For the previous 19 seasons, Highsmith was part of the Packers’ player personnel department.

Highsmith attended the University of Miami before entering the NFL. During his professional career, he spent time with the Oilers, Cowboys and Buccaneers.  In his 65 regular-season games played, Highsmith logged 283 carries for 1195 yards and seven touchdowns.

During his lengthy stint in Green Bay, Highsmith worked with John Schneider before his hiring as Seattle’s general manager.
