Chiefs to extend Creed Humphrey, make him NFL’s highest-paid center

According to a report, the #Chiefs are set to extend Creed Humphrey on a contract that will make him the NFL’s highest-paid center.

According to a report from NFL Network national insider Ian Rapoport, the Kansas City Chiefs are set to extend the contract of star offensive lineman Creed Humphrey in a deal that will make him the NFL’s highest-paid center.

News of Humphrey’s extension broke just before the Chiefs’ preseason finale against the Chicago Bears on Thursday night. Though the former Oklahoma Sooner isn’t expected to see action in the exhibition matchup, his new agreement with Kansas City dominated headlines as the game kicked off.

Humphrey joined the Chiefs as a second-round pick in 2021 and has become a key part of Kansas City’s offensive line while playing on his rookie contract.

While the numbers on Humphrey’s new deal weren’t part of Rapoport’s report on Thursday night, the fine details of his agreement with the Chiefs will almost certainly shake up the market for other centers around the NFL.

Expect to see Humphrey back in action when Kansas City faces the Baltimore Ravens on September 5.

Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling ends regular season with abysmal numbers

#Chiefs WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling ended the regular season as Kansas City’s fourth-leading receiver.

The Kansas City Chiefs have a glaring need at the wide receiver position, and veteran pass catcher Marquez Valdes-Scantling is a major reason why the team’s offense underperformed during the regular season.

When the Chiefs signed him as a free agent in 2022 fans had high hopes for the speedy 6-foot-4 receiver, and his performance last year was admirable, even if he didn’t produce a 1,000-yard campaign.

However, in 2023, things have gone completely sideways for the 29-year-old. Despite suiting up for Kansas City’s first 16 games as the highest-paid receiver on the team’s roster, Valdes-Scantling only managed to catch 21 passes for 315 yards and one touchdown this season, according to Pro Football Reference.

He will end the year as the Chiefs’ fourth-leading receiver behind Travis Kelce, Rashee Rice, and Justin Watson.

The playoffs will present an opportunity for Valdes-Scantling to right the ship, but after his poor performance in Kansas City’s Super Bowl championship defense campaign, it seems likely that the Chiefs will elect to cut him in the offseason, which could save the team $12 million in cap space.

Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes lands on list of world’s highest-paid athletes

#Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes made Forbes’ list of the world’s highest-paid athletes, but he wasn’t the top NFL QB on the list.

It wasn’t long ago that we were talking about Kansas City Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes signing the richest sports contract in history. Now, he’s not even in the top 5 in per year average for the quarterback position in the NFL. That could soon change, but his status as one of the wealthiest athletes in all of sports hasn’t much.

Forbes recently unveiled its annual measure of the world’s highest-paid athletes. They say they tracked income collected by athletes for a full calendar year based on conversations with insiders including DODICI Sports Management’s Mariano Trasande. They also used salary databases such as Spotrac and Capology to track on-field earnings. Off-field earnings include an estimate of sponsorship deals, appearance fees, memorabilia, licensing income and cash returns on business investments.

Mahomes came in at No. 24 on their list, earning $59.3M from May 1 of 2022 through May 1 of 2023. $39.3M was earned on the gridiron, while another $20 million was earned via endorsements. Here are some notes they had on Mahomes and those earnings:

Mahomes made his third Super Bowl appearance in four years in February 2023, claiming his second title and his second Super Bowl MVP Award.

The success has helped the five-time Pro Bowler build up a substantial endorsement portfolio. Among NFL players, only Tom Brady has made more in recent years.

In July 2020, Mahomes signed a ten-year contract extension with the Chiefs worth up to $503 million.

Among NFL players only Kyler Murray (19, $70.5M) and Russell Wilson (12, $85M) earned more than Mahomes in the period that Forbes measured. Mahomes had significantly more in off-the-field earnings than both Murray ($3.5M) and Wilson ($13M).

WATCH: Bears make Eddie Jackson the highest-paid safety in NFL history

With three years in the NFL under his belt, Eddie Jackson is now the highest-paid safety in NFL history.

With three years in the NFL under his belt, Eddie Jackson is now the highest-paid safety in NFL history.

The 26-year-old’s agency announced Friday that the Chicago Bears are making a mega-investment in the former Alabama player.

Jackson signed a four-year contract extension worth $58.4 million. The annual average of $14.6 million is more than any other player at the position in league history, according to SportsTrust Advisors, which is the agency that reps Jackson.

While he still had a year left on his rookie deal, it’s understandable why the Bears wanted to lock Jackson into a longer contract now.

Jackson is a two-time Pro Bowl Player. He has 10 career interceptions, four forced fumbles, and three defensive touchdowns after three seasons.
