Colts complete head coach interview with Dan Quinn

The Colts completed their head coach interview with Cowboys DC Dan Quinn.

The Indianapolis Colts completed their head coach interview with Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, the team announced Friday.

This marks the 11th head coach interview the Colts have completed since the end of the regular season. They also are scheduled to interview San Francisco 49ers defensive coordinator DeMeco Ryans and both New York Giants coordinators Mike Kafka and Wink Martindale this weekend.

You can follow along for the latest updates with the head coach search via our tracker.

Quinn has been coaching in the NFL for the majority of the last 20 years. He had a two-year stint (2011-2012) when he went to be the defensive coordinator and defensive line coach of the Florida Gators.

After spending six seasons coaching in college, Quinn got his start in the NFL with the San Francisco as a defensive quality control coach for two seasons (2001-2002). He then was promoted to defensive line coach for two more seasons (2003-2004) before holding the same role with the Miami Dolphins (2005-2006) and New York Jets (2007-2008).

Quinn then made his way to Seattle, where he was the assistant head coach and defensive line coach for the Seahawks (2009-2010) before his stint at Florida.

He returned to the NFL with the Seahawks as the defensive coordinator for two seasons (2013-2014) before getting the head coach job with the Atlanta Falcons, a role he held for five and a half seasons (2015-2020).

In his second season as a head coach, Quinn led the Falcons to Super Bowl LI but infamously blew the largest lead in Super Bowl history after being up 28-3 in the third quarter over the New England Patriots.

Quinn was fired midseason by the Falcons during the 2020 campaign and promptly joined the Cowboys as the defensive coordinator under Mike McCarthy, a role he’s held since 2021.

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.

Colts complete head coach interview with Brian Callahan

The Colts completed their interview with Bengals OC Brian Callahan on Friday.

The Indianapolis Colts completed their head coach interview with Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Brian Callahan, the team announced Friday.

This marks the 10th head coach interview the Colts have conducted since the end of the regular season. And there are still a handful more to go over the next few weeks.

You can follow along for the latest updates with the head coach search via our tracker.

Callahan, 38, would be another offensive-minded candidate to coach the Colts. He started coaching in the NFL with the Denver Broncos in 2010 as a coaching assistant. He then moved up to offensive quality control for two seasons (2011-2012) and then to the role of offensive assistant for three seasons (2013-2015).

After his stint with the Broncos, Callahan was the quarterbacks coach for the Detroit Lions for two seasons (2016-2017) and the then-Oakland Raiders (2018).

When Zac Taylor took over as head coach of the Bengals during the 2019 offseason, he hired Callahan to be his offensive coordinator, a role he’s held for the last four seasons.

Callahan is the son of longtime NFL coach Bill Callahan, who is currently the offensive line coach for the Cleveland Browns.

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay.

Colts complete head coach interview with Jeff Saturday

The Colts completed an interview with Jeff Saturday for their head coach vacancy Thursday.

The Indianapolis Colts completed their head coach interview with Jeff Saturday, the team announced Thursday.

Following his interim tenure during the final eight games of the 2022 regular season, it was expected that Saturday was going to get his chance at interviewing for the permanent role.

Saturday’s interview marks the eighth candidate the Colts have brought in since the end of the regular season.

You can follow along for the latest updates with the head coach search via our tracker.

Despite having no prior coaching experience at either the NFL or college levels, owner Jim Irsay made the decision midseason to hire Saturday following the firing of former head coach Frank Reich.

Saturday’s tenure started off with a bang, defeating the Las Vegas Raiders 25-20 in his first ever game as a head coach. The rest of the season, however, was not as much fun.

The Colts followed that up with a seven-game losing streak to end the season. It was clear Saturday’s inexperience as a coach was a detriment to any chances the Colts had to put together a late-season run.

During his tenure, the Colts had a -87 point differential. That was (surprisingly) the second-worst mark during that time. He also was the head coach for two historic moments. The first came against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 13 when they scored 33 unanswered points in the fourth quarter in primetime.

Then, coming out of the bye in Week 15, the Colts blew the largest lead in NFL history, allowing the Minnesota Vikings to erase a 36-3 lead during the second half of that game.

In any other instance, Saturday wouldn’t even be considered as a head coach candidate. But his excellent playing career with the Colts, his charisma and charm, and his intellect as a former player is why Irsay made the impulsive move in the first place.

The head coaching search will be led by general manager Chris Ballard, but the decision ultimately resides with owner Jim Irsay, which means Saturday is certainly in play.

Colts request to interview Dan Quinn for head coach vacancy

Colts requested to interview Cowboys DC Dan Quinn for their head coach vacancy.

The Indianapolis Colts requested to interview Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn for their head coach vacancy, per Todd Archer of ESPN on Tuesday.

The search for a new head coach has already gotten underway. The Colts have interviewed seven candidates while submitting requests to interview four more coaches, which now includes Quinn. One of the Colts’ candidates, Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson, informed the team he would be staying in his current role.

Cowboys DC Dan Quinn requested by Colts for HC interview

Quinn is already set to meet with the Broncos on Friday about their opening; the Indianapolis job would reunite Quinn with QB Matt Ryan. | From @ToddBrock24f7

As expected, Dan Quinn’s dance card is filling up quickly.

The Cowboys defensive coordinator, fresh off his unit’s stifling of Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the wild-card round of the postseason, is being approached by the Indianapolis Colts for their head coaching position, according to Todd Archer of ESPN.

The Colts finished the 2022 season with a 4-12-1 record under interim head coach Jeff Saturday. Saturday, the team’s longtime center with no coaching experience at any level, had been hired midway through the season in a surprise move after the firing of Frank Reich following a Week 9 loss to New England.

Quinn, of course, has great familiarity with current Indianapolis quarterback Matt Ryan. The two were paired for five-plus years in Atlanta when Quinn was the club’s head coach. The Falcons went to Super Bowl LI in 2016, Ryan’s second year under Quinn, and made the divisional round the year after.

Ryan’s status with the team for next season is unknown. Even though the 37-year-old is technically still under contract for 2023, the Colts’ new head coach would likely have a key role in determining Ryan’s future in Indianapolis.

A timeline for Quinn’s chat with Colts owner Jim Irsay  and GM Chris Ballard is not yet known, but the 52-year-old coordinator is already set to meet with the Denver Broncos on Friday about their head coaching job.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Quinn’s upcoming interviews wouldn’t detract from the team’s short-week preparations for San Francisco this Sunday.

“Dan is the consummate, experienced coach,” Jones said Tuesday on Dallas radio station 105.3 The Fan. “Nobody relies on being focused at the game at hand, and no one has a better appreciation. His background, his experience there in Atlanta, there at Seattle. And so he is not going to compromise one iota anything that we’re doing with the Cowboys and what we’re doing this weekend.”

The Colts have a long list of candidates lined up for interviews. Eagles OC Shane Steichen, Lions DC Aaron Glenn, Rams DC Raheem Morris, Lions OC Ben Johnson, Broncos DC Ejiro Evero, and Chiefs OC Eric Bieniemy are among those who have already sat down with the team. Additional prospects include Giants OC Mike Kafka, Giants DC Wink Martindale, and 49ers DC DeMeco Ryans.

Saturday is also reportedly in the running to keep the job on a full-time basis.

Report: Colts’ interview with Raheem Morris ‘went really well’

The Colts’ head coach interview with Rams DC Raheem Morris reportedly ‘went really well’ last week.

The Indianapolis Colts interviewed Los Angeles Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris last week, and it reportedly “went really well,” according to Zak Keefer of The Athletic.

Since the 2022 regular season ended, the Colts have been running an extensive search. They’ve already interviewed seven candidates and have three more requests in for coaches currently on playoff teams.

But it seems the interview with Morris is one that has stood out. Here’s what Keefer said:

“The Colts’ interview with Rams defensive coordinator Raheem Morris on Friday went really well. Morris is an intriguing candidate, a veteran coach who got his first shot at leading a team very early in his career — he was just 33 years old when he replaced Jon Gruden in Tampa Bay in 2009. But Morris was fired just three years later, after one winning season and a 17-31 record, and he has been working toward his second chance ever since.”

The search is far from over, and it could be a process that takes a while to complete. The team hasn’t even interviewed interim head coach Jeff Saturday yet, something that is expected to happen soon.

But it wouldn’t be a surprise if Morris is one of the leading candidates, and it’s likely that if his first interview went well, then the Colts will want to bring him back for another in-person interview.

Keefer also noted that Morris could bring a strong coaching staff with him, particularly including plenty of names currently with Los Angeles like “defensive line coach Eric Henderson for defensive coordinator and Rams passing game coordinator and QBs coach Zac Robinson for offensive coordinator.”

A defensive-minded option, Morris also spent five seasons as the pass-game coordinator (2015-2019) and four seasons as the wide receivers coach (2016-2019) for the Atlanta Falcons.

The search is far from over, but it’s noteworthy that the interview with Morris went well.
