No. 4 Texas A&M baseball team earns first narrow victory of season versus Wagner to remain unbeaten

The Aggies were challenged for the first time in the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park but they held on for a 2-0 victory.

The No. 4 Texas A&M baseball team was challenged for the first time in the 2024 season on Saturday afternoon at Blue Bell Park.

The Aggies (6-0) held on for a 2-0 victory versus Wagner after scoring both runs in the first inning. Texas A&M leaned on its stellar pitching staff again.

Justin Lamkin (1-0) picked up his first win of the year by pitching the first 5.0 scoreless innings, allowing 3 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts on 67 pitches. The sophomore left-hander has not allowed a run through two starts.

Senior LHP Evan Aschenbeck tossed the final 4.0 innings and allowed 2 hits and 1 walk with 7 Ks on 46 pitches. Aschenbeck earned the save to mark the longest by an Aggie since 2021 alumnus Jacob Palisch accomplished the feat as a graduate student against Arkansas in 2022.

With the victory, Texas A&M earned its second straight weekend series to begin the campaign for the first time under head coach Jim Schlossnagle. Saturday’s win is the third time in program history that the Aggies have earned a shutout in half of their first six matchups (1949 & 1983). Six runs allowed thus far is the fewest since 2011.

Texas A&M scored its two runs on an RBI single up the middle by junior right fielder Braden Montgomery to score freshman third baseman Graham Grahovac. Montgomery reached base safely for the 34th consecutive contest.

Following an error in the outfield on Montgomery’s hit, sophomore center fielder Jace LoViolette scored an unearned run. Grad student left fielder Hayden Schott went 3-for-4 at the plate to continue his streak as the only Aggie to tally at least one hit in each game this season.

Texas A&M goes for a sweep of the Seahawks from Staten Island tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Texas A&M baseball team reaches 5-0 for first time since 2020 with series-opening win versus Wagner

The Aggies continued to roll on Friday at Blue Bell Park, wallopping Wagner University of Staten Island, New York by a final score of 17-2.

For the 32nd time in program history and the first occurrence since 2020, the Texas A&M baseball team has begun the season with a 5-0 overall record.

The Aggies continued to roll to begin this weekend at Blue Bell Park, wallopping Wagner University of Staten Island, New York by a final score of 17-2. Friday’s matchup was the first all-time between the two programs.

Texas A&M kicked off the new campaign last weekend with a three-game sweep of McNeese State. The Aggies outscored the Cowboys 31-1 and achieved a feat that hadn’t been done in over 100 years.

On Tuesday night, Jace LaViolette propelled Texas A&M to a 9-3 win versus Incarnate Word. The superstar sophomore outfielder hit 2 home runs, bringing his total to 5 through four games. LaViolette didn’t homer in the series opener against the Seahawks on Friday but he did record his fourth multi-hit performance alongside junior infielder Ali Camarillo.

Graduate OF Hayden Schott has tallied at least 1 hit in each game thus far. Senior catcher Hank Bard set a new career-high with 4 runs batted in against Wagner.

Redshirt sophomore Ryan Prager (2-0) earned the win by pitching a career-best 6.2 scoreless innings. He also set a new career-high in strikeouts with 10. In two starts, Prager has tossed 11.2 shutout innings with 19 strikeouts and 1 walk.

Aggies starting pitchers have yet to allow an earned run through five games. Texas A&M will be back at it on Saturday at 2 p.m.

Mic’d up: A behind the scene snippet of Texas A&M Baseball with OF Hayden Schott

Texas A&M is looking to make a run this season and will have a lot of fun along the way.

Friday, February 16, is opening day for Texas A&M’s 2024 baseball season, and everyone is excited to see this talented Aggie squad finally take the field. Much deserved hype (on paper at least) surrounds the team with two consensus All-Americans and boasts a top-10 ranking heading into the 2024 season. The talent level is undeniable, but all expectations must be dampened until we see how the pitching shakes out after a few weeks of play.

If the pitching is even a fraction better than it was last season, this squad has a great chance of making it to the Super regionals this summer. Then, the sky is the limit from that point. Outside of just the talent, there has been a sense of camaraderie and genuine joy in the game among the team. A quick snippet from Aggie Hayden Schott gives us a glimpse of that.
