Former Oregon LB announces transfer destination

There has been a lot of roster turnover for the Oregon Ducks this offseason as head coach Dan Lanning continues to mix and match and find the right combination of players that fit his scheme going forward.

Redshirt freshman linebacker Harrison Taggart is one of the players who left Eugene to enter the transfer portal, and on Saturday he announced that he would be ending up at BYU with the Cougars.

As a Utah native from Draper, it makes sense that Taggart would want to play closer to home and join a system where he has a better chance at seeing more of the field in the future. Taggart was one of the last Mario Cristobal recruits from the class of 2022, and he was a highly-rated 4-star who ranked as the No. 36 linebacker and No. 377 overall player in the 2022 class.

Taggart’s sister, Madelynne, also transferred from Oregon to BYU where she is a standout track and field athlete.

Redshirt freshman LB Harrison Taggart enters transfer portal

Harrison Taggart is the second Oregon Duck to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday morning.

A pair of Oregon Ducks announced that they would be entering the transfer portal and leaving the team on Wednesday morning. The first to do so what redshirt freshman Anthony Jones, a key member of the 2022 recruiting class. The second to do was was redshirt freshman Harrison Taggart, a linebacker who was working to get into the rotation on defense this coming season.

Taggart came to Eugene a year ago as part of Dan Lanning’s first recruiting class at Oregon. He was a 4-star prospect rated as the No. 36 linebacker in the class.

Taggart did not see any playing time as a freshman and was competing with a talented group of LBs to get onto the field this year, though he did not project to be part of any two-deep depth chart going into the spring game.

4-star LB Harrison Taggart to enroll early at Oregon; RB Jordan James to join Ducks this summer

LB Harrison Taggart will participate in spring ball with the Ducks, but RB Jordan James will not join the team until summer.

As we inch closer to spring football starting for the Oregon Ducks, we are getting a clearer picture which incoming freshmen will enroll early and join the team for practices starting in March.

Last week, we found out four-star cornerback Jahlil Florence and four-star wide receiver Justius Lowe would be on campus for spring ball, and four-star athlete Anthony Jones has been enrolled at the U of O since January, so he will be playing as well.

Ducks Wire has also learned four-star linebacker Harrison Taggart will join the Ducks midway through the spring session, arriving on March 23. Meanwhile, four-star running back Jordan James will not arrive in Eugene until the summer, per a source.

While it’s unfortunate we will not be able to see James play until later in the season, there will be enough storylines to follow this spring as the new-look Oregon Ducks take the field.

Spring ball starts on March 10, with a series of practices leading up to the spring game on April 23.

Oregon football storylines to follow: Which true freshmen will have an instant impact this spring?

We only know of a few true freshmen to join the Ducks for spring ball, but can’t wait to see which players have an instant impact.

The past couple of months of Oregon Football have certainly been eventful, all the while very little action took place on the field. A new coaching staff has been put into place, and a top-25 recruiting class has been signed. Meanwhile, highly-rated transfers have come to Eugene, and a few key players have left for new destinations.

For an Oregon fan, there are a lot of storylines to keep track of, and with Spring Practice starting on March 10th, we will likely get a few answers in the coming weeks. So which ones should you be paying the most attention to? We tried to help answer that question in our continuing Spring Preview by singling out a few and highlighting what makes them so interesting.

The True Freshmen Watch is On

The Oregon Ducks’ 2022 recruiting class definitely wasn’t the highest-rated that we’ve seen in recent memory, but it garnered a lot of excitement. To be up-front, the Ducks’ 25th-ranked class this year was their worst finish nationally since 2016 when they had the No. 27 overall class. Since then, Oregon has made it into the top-10 a pair of times and been inside the top-15 a total of four times. Despite that, the way that Dan Lanning closed on national signing day gave a burst of energy to the Oregon fanbase.

[lawrence-related id=20350]

A lot of that has to do with the fact that the Ducks’ class was ranked in the 70s after the departure of Mario Cristobal left for Miami. Lanning’s top crew of recruiters managed to build it back up, securing numerous flips from top-rated players like RB Jordan James and OL Dave Iuli, who chose the Ducks over Georgia and Miami, respectively.

Now with spring football on the horizon, we finally get to see some of these players in action.

Earlier this week, Ducks Wire has received confirmation that 4-star CB Jahlil Florence, 4-star WR Justius Lowe, 4-star LB Harrison Taggart, and 4-star ATH Anthony Jones will be enrolling early at Oregon and participating in spring ball, but we are waiting on confirmation from more players.

While we don’t know the entire list of true freshmen to be enrolling early at Oregon, there has been a noticeable trend as of late that has seen high school seniors choose to graduate early and head off to college as soon as they can in order to get acclimated in the new lifestyle before the summer and football season begins. We saw that last season with QB Ty Thompson and WRs Troy Franklin and Dont’e Thornton, all of whom had impressive days during the Oregon Spring Game. So who will be the newcomers to have a big impact this year?

Without knowing the entire list just yet, it is impossible to say, but there are a number of recent recruits that we have high hopes for in 2022. Let’s touch on a few:

RB Jordan James

We are still waiting on confirmation from 4-star RB Jordan James as to whether or not he will be participating in the spring, but you can guarantee that he is going to attract a lot of eyes once he does finally hit the field in Eugene.

After flipping his commitment on national signing day and choosing the Ducks over the Georgia Bulldogs, there is a hope that he can develop into one of the feature backs for Oregon’s offense. That may not take place this year, with Byron Cardwell and Sean Dollars seemingly leading the way, but whatever we see from James early on will be newsworthy.

Linebacker Harrison Taggart decides to stay with the Ducks

Linebacker Harrison Taggart decides to stay with the Ducks and defensive-minded Dan Lanning.

You just never know how many recruits are going to remain committed and how many are going to go elsewhere.

Dan Lanning has made it 2-for-2 in linebackers on early signing day with the official signing of 3-star recruit Harrison Taggart. Some recruiting services have Taggart listed as a 4-star.

The 6-foot-2, 200-pounder from Draper, Utah was the top-ranked outside linebacker from Utah according to ESPN and No. 3 according to Rivals. He was also named the No. 2 linebacker from the state by 247Sports and the 247 composite. A three-year letterman, Taggart helped lead his high school team to a 40-2 record and two state championships and a state runner-up finish over the last three seasons.

Taggart finished his career with 237 tackles (151 solo) with 22 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks, two interceptions, and two forced fumbles while averaging 7.2 tackles per game. He also had nine double-figure tackle games, including five 15-plus tackle games.

With Taggart and Devon Jackson in the fold, to go along with Noah Sewell and Justin Flowe, the Ducks are about to have the deepest linebacking corps anywhere in the country.

Ducks land commitment from 4-star LB Harrison Taggart

The recruiting trail stays hot for Oregon! Mario Cristobal added 4-star Harrison Taggart on Sunday, the No. 34 LB in the nation.

Mario Cristobal and his top team of recruiters landed a massive win on Sunday night, picking up the commitment from 4-star linebacker Harrison Taggart, adding him to the class of 2022 that already ranks atop the Pac-12 conference standings.

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound linebacker out of Draper, Utah chose the Ducks over offers from Arizona, UCLA, USC, Utah, and Nebraska.

Taggart is ranked as the No. 34 linebacker in the 2022 recruiting class, and the No. 5 linebacker in the state of Utah. He is now part of an Oregon class that ranks 6th in the nation, with commitments already from 5-star OT Kelvin Banks, as well as a number of 4-stars, like WR Tetairoa McMillan, CB Jalil Tucker, LB TJ Dudley, and QB Tanner Bailey.

The Ducks may be struggling to be dominant on the field as of late this season, but they still remain among the best in the nation when it comes to the recruiting trail.

Utah standout says Clemson offer would make his decision ‘much more difficult’

A versatile athlete from Utah has seen his recruitment explode this year following a position switch ahead of his breakout season in 2020.

Four-star class of 2022 prospect Harrison Taggart, who played wide receiver his first two years at Corner Canyon High School (Draper, Utah), moved to linebacker heading into his junior campaign and proceeded to post 140 tackles, four interceptions, five sacks and a safety to go along with three touchdowns.

The 6-foot-2, 208-pound rising senior has received more than two dozen offers since January, including offers from Utah, Arizona, Oregon, Southern Cal, UCLA, Cal, Virginia, Northwestern, Indiana, Duke, Louisville and Boston College among others.

While Clemson has not offered to date, Taggart is attracting interest from the Tigers and has been staying in touch with defensive coordinator and linebackers coach Brent Venables.

“I have talked with Coach Venables multiple times, and he has reached out to my head coach,” Taggart told The Clemson Insider. “I continue to get graphics and mail from them.”

Taggart and Venables have been building a relationship and getting to know each other, touching on a number of different topics during their conversations.

“We talked about the offers he has out,” Taggart said. “We talked about my family and his, talked about spirituality and then me as a person and me on the field.”

Venables is fond of Taggart, both as a player and a person.

“He loves my work ethic and style of play,” Taggart said. “I’ve grown up in a religious family with three younger siblings. He also got the chance to talk with my mom, which I loved.”

Taggart hopes to make his commitment decision by the end of September, if not sooner.

There is strong mutual interest between Clemson and Taggart, who would certainly have a lot to think about if the Tigers were to pull the trigger on an offer.

“I have always loved what Clemson has to offer,” he said. “I love the culture the coaches have created, the school and the environment. And, after speaking with the coaches I’m even more impressed than I was before. I know Clemson would have a big impact on my recruiting decision and definitely make my decision much more difficult.”

Taggart, who also runs track and recorded a time of 10.7 in the 100 meters this spring, sees himself as a hybrid linebacker/safety type like former Clemson star Isaiah Simmons.

Taggart was named a junior All-American by MaxPreps following the 2020 season. He is ranked as the No. 4 player in the state of Utah by Rivals and the No. 5 player in the state by both 247Sports and the 247Sports Composite.
