Halo: The Master Chief Collection adds Flood Firefight and extra campaign crossplay options

Scary potatoes are infecting a fan-favorite Halo mode.

That playful tease from 343 Industries last week is what everyone was hoping for — Flood Firefight is now in Halo: The Master Chief Collection.

On Monday, 343 Industries released a massive update for Halo: The Master Chief Collection. There are plenty of bug fixes and tweaks as usual, though the inclusion of Flood Firefight in Halo 3: ODST is catching everyone’s eye. Firefight is one of the most popular modes across the series, though it has never featured the Flood (Halo’s parasitic-potato alien species) until now. 343 also claims the Flood are more intelligent than ever before, able to infect and resurrect players that are pushing up daisies.

Another fantastic addition is campaign crossplay for Halo 3 and Halo 3: ODST. PC and console fans can now team up and go through either game together, something the community has wanted for ages. 343 Industries does warn that the feature may still contain bugs, so check out the official blog for all the details.

It’s hard to believe that there was a time when Halo: The Master Chief Collection was seen as a disaster. These days, it’s a shining example of how to do a remaster right, even if seasonal updates are over now. If only Halo Infinite could receive the same sort of love, we’d be golden.

343 Industries is teasing something new for Halo: The Master Chief Collection

The content rollout for classic Halo isn’t over yet, it seems.

Everyone thought Halo: The Master Chief Collection wouldn’t receive content updates anymore. After all, 343 Industries cut off seasonal support last fall. Now, it looks as though new stuff is on the way.

On Friday, the official Halo Twitter account made a tweet that has fans going wild with speculation. “Next week, something new is on its way to [Halo: The Master Chief Collection],” 343 Industries said, including a peculiar screenshot. In the image taken from Halo 3: ODST, a Marine battles The Flood — parasitic aliens that do not appear in that game.

It also looks as if the screenshot is from Halo 3: ODST’s firefight mode. Call me crazy, but 343 Industries might be adding The Flood to firefight. Of course, this is speculation, but it doesn’t take detective work to figure out what’s going on.

Halo: The Master Chief Collection getting content updates this many years after release is wild. Particularly since Halo Infinite, which should be 343 Industries’ priority, is only receiving a chunky update now. Well, in a month, it will!

Too often, classic first-person shooters are left to wither away, so at least 343 Industries isn’t letting that happen.

These Halo players took part in a legendary sword duel

A tale of swords and souls, eternally retold.

Every so often, there are those rare moments in video games that remind everyone how exciting locking-horns can be — or rather, clashing energy swords as some Halo  fans recently did.

Over on Reddit, user Ali_Auditorie bore witness to a thrilling one-on-one sword duel during a custom game of Halo Reach. Both players don fan-favorite Elite skins while slowly circling each other until one chooses to strike. They fly through the air, ripping into each other’s shields as if the fate of the world was at stake. It was a hard-fought battle, and the victor clearly earned their place in the spotlight.

Check it out for yourself in the video below. I’d be curious to find out if this is the original version of Halo Reach  or The Master Chief Collection  port. Probably the latter, given you can’t play the former online for much longer.

I was on a custom social game and witnessed this epic 1v1 sword duel from halo

It reminds me of that time  someone bowed post-energy sword fight. took bad they didn’t do that here!

Halo’s  unique combat sandbox  always makes for fun stuff like this duel. Recently, a group of Halo Infinite fans  worked together to see if one person could take out 23 opponents at once with the sniper rifle.

Someone loaded Halo’s needler weapon with hot dogs

Grilltacular indeed.

Halo  hype is  damn near palpable these days. It’s as if we all stuffed some Mountain Dew and Doritos into a backpack and joyously skipped our way over to a friend’s place for a LAN party like it’s 2004.

One fan chose to celebrate  the franchise’s grand return  by stuffing hot dogs into the needler, Halo’s  heavily meme-worthy projectile weapon.

Over on Halo’s  subreddit, user ChrisDAnimation created a somewhat disturbing animation featuring the needler firing off tube steaks onto a grill as if it’s the 4th of July. They even got Jeff Steitzer, the announcer for Halo’s  multiplayer, to spout off lines like “Double Grill” and “Grilltacular” while firing the weapon.

Take a look at the hot dog-loaded needler for yourself in the video below. Remember, though, that some images will haunt you until well into old age.

I loaded my needler with hot dogs so that you don’t have to from halo

Snark aside, this is a pretty hilarious tribute on  ChrisDAnimation’s  part. They got the idea for it from a semi-viral tweet that was making the round last week.

Despite the odds, Halo’s  biggest meme this week wasn’t  someone downing 23 opponents with one sniper bullet. Go figure!

More stuff like this is likely to pop up as we get closer to Halo Infinite’s  campaign launch date on Dec. 8. If you’re playing its multiplayer mode and want a hand getting good, check out our guides  on the medals  and  how the weapon offset settings work

Here’s a teaser for Halo’s new TV series

Master Chief, mind telling me why you’re starring in your own TV show?

After years of hype, the live-action Halo  series got a teaser trailer. Oh, and the show will premiere sometime next year!

The teaser doesn’t give a ton to go on but we know that Master Chief and Cortana will be in the show. There are close-ups of Chief’s MJOLNIR armor and a single line of dialogue. “Hello, Master Chief,” Cortana says during the teaser. It sounds like Jen Taylor, who has been voicing Cortana for 20 years now, is reprising her role. So it seems like the showrunners are trying to be as faithful to the games as possible.

Check out the Halo  teaser for yourself below.

The series will stream exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US. It’s kind of weird to simply call the show Halo  since that’ll likely lead to a lot of confused googling. But whatever, at least we’ll get to see what Grunts look like in horrifying live-action detail. Keith David needs to come back as the Arbiter too, please — mandibles on his face and everything.

Other announcements from the Xbox 20th anniversary event include Halo Infinite’s  surprise beta launch  and 76 new games coming to Xbox’s backward compatibility program

‘Halo: The Master Chief Collection’ is completely free for everyone until October 18

Master Chief, mind telling me why you’re totally free this weekend?

Halo: The Master Chief Collection is available this weekend for the ultra-low price of free until Oct. 18 on both PC and Xbox.

That’s right, for zero dollars and zero cents, you’ll get several incredible first-person shooters, including:

  • Halo: Combat Evolved Anniversary
  • Halo 2: Anniversary
  • Halo 3
  • Halo 3: ODST
  • Halo: Reach
  • Halo 4

While the games are free for now, you’ll have to pay by Oct. 18 to keep them. Thankfully, 343 Industries and Microsoft have slapped a 50 percent discount on Halo: The Master Chief Collection, bringing the total to $19.99 USD. What better way to prepare for Halo Infinite’s launch in December is there than to replay the whole saga? Well, except Halo 5, that is.

So yup, Halo is free! Most of it, anyway. Just head over to Halo: The Master Chief Collection’s  Steam or Xbox pages and add the collection to your account to get in on its free weekend. It’d be far cheaper to get in on this deal than, say, buy official Halo  bling, but you do you fam.

Season eight of Halo: The Master Chief Collection came out just the other day as well. Check out the stylish launch trailer for yourself below.

Now go on. Get out there and finish the fight!

Hilarious ‘Halo’ bling is available for anyone that wants to sticky-grenade in style

Master Chief, mind telling me why you’re spinning those rhymes?

Anyone looking to prove Master Chief is their idol better pick up the new Halo  bling from streetwear jeweler King Ice.

Yup, diamond-encrusted Halo  bling, just in time for Halo Infinite’s  launch in December. There are several necklaces available in the Halo X King Ice collection, including an Energy Sword, Master Chief Helmet, Master Chief’s spartan armor, and Needler — someone want to spot me the cast for that last one? The Needler has always been good, ok? Don’t feel compelled to, though, as these necklaces range from $100 to $149 USD.

Check out King Ice’s Halo collection for yourself below.

“Enough bling for the entire Ring” is the best Halo-themed rhyme anyone has ever come up with, by the way.

Snark aside, these don’t look bad at all. And it seems many would agree, as the Energy Sword necklace is already sold out! So act fast if you’re even slightly interested in this gear.

The Halo X King Ice collection is likely part of the marketing craze we’re about to witness as part of the lead-up to Halo Infinite’s release. Coincidentally, Halo: The Master Chief Collection  just got its last ever seasonal update this week too.

There’s a collection pun in here somewhere, I swear.

Upcoming season of ‘Halo: The Master Chief Collection’ will be the last

At least the custom game browser is finally coming!

Fans of Halo: The Master Chief Collection should know that Season 8 will be its last free content update. Developer 343 Industries announced that the studio needs to shuffle resources due to Halo Infinite  launching in December

“It’s important to us that we position MCC’s eighth season for success but also help alleviate any conflicts that could take away from the studio’s focus on Halo Infinite’s launch,” Michael ‘Farns’ Fahrny, community and engagement coordinator at 343, said in a blog post on Halo Waypoint. “To that end, Season 8’s release later this Fall will be our last official MCC update of this calendar year.”

Check out the full blog entry for yourself below.

It’s a sad bit of news for anyone still playing Halo: The Master Chief Collection regularly, particularly as an esport, but it’s hardly unexpected. With Halo Infinite  already positioning itself as a global esport, 343 likely needs to ensure its launch goes off without a hitch. Especially in light of some fears people have about the game.

Though it’s not all bittersweet news for Halo: The Master Chief Collection and its fans. As 343 announced, some cool additions are coming with season 8. From the much-sought-after custom game browser to additional mod support for each title in the collection, there’s plenty of improvements and additions to be excited about when the new season launches later this fall.
