Giants place Gunner Olszewski on IR, elevate 2 from practice squad

The New York Giants have placed Gunner Olszewski on injured reserve (IR) and elevated two from the practice squad.

The New York Giants have placed wide receiver and kick returner, Gunner Olszewski, on injured reserve (IR) and elevated linebackers Ty Summers and Tomon Fox from their practice squad.

With Olszewski now on IR, the Giants will be short of their full 53-man roster (plus two practice squad elevations) for the second consecutive week.

Earlier on Saturday, the Giants also added kicker Graham Gano to their injury list with a groin ailment.

They could have chosen to sign kicker Jude McAtamney to their active roster or to elevate him but opted against it. Instead, they went with the elevations of Summers and Fox.

The reason for that is rookie Darius Muasau is out this week and Micah McFadden hasn’t played in a game due to a groin injury he suffered in the Giants’ first preseason game in Houston.

McFadden practiced in full on Friday and is expected to play this week.

For Summers, this is his second standard elevation. He has one remaining. This is the first elevation for Fox, who now has two remaining.

Giants’ Malik Nabers will play vs. Commanders, 3 ruled out

New York Giants WR Malik Nabers will play against the Washington Commanders but three others have been ruled out, including CB Nick McCloud.

The New York Giants will continue their 2024 regular season on Sunday against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Both teams are coming off ugly Week 1 losses and will aim to rebound within the division. The Giants have dominated the Commanders over the past several years, but there’s an entirely new regime in Washington now and their on-field personnel is led by rookie quarterback Jayden Daniels.

As the Giants took the field on Friday, all eyes were on rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers, who popped up on Thursday’s injury report with a knee injury.

“He’s good,” head coach Brian Daboll told reporters before practice. “He’s going to practice. We’ll see how he feels when he gets out here, but no concern. He’ll be ready to play.”

Despite Daboll’s optimism, Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that Nabers was limping in practice.

Meanwhile, fellow wide receiver Darius Slayton remained in concussion protocol but took another step toward returning.

“He’s going to be able to practice (with) contact, then he’s got to pass one more thing, but trending in the right direction,” Daboll said. “We’ll see where we’re at with (cornerback) Nick (McCloud) and (inside linebacker) Darius (Muasau). Revisit it after practice and see where we’re at there.”

Giants injury report: Malik Nabers limited in practice with knee injury

New York Giants WR Malik Nabers was added to the injury report and limited in practice due to a knee injury.

The New York Giants returned to the field on Thursday afternoon for their second of three practices ahead of a Week 2 game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium.

Wide receiver Darius Slayton, who remains in a concussion protocol, took a step toward returning. He participated in a red non-contact jersey and barring any setbacks, is on pace to play in Sunday’s game.

The same could not be said for the other three players who missed practice on Wednesday. Wide receiver Gunner Olszewski (groin), as expected, and both cornerback Nick McCloud (knee) and linebacker Darius Muasau (knee) continued to sit out.

Olszewski is not likely to return to the field for several more weeks.

Finally, rookie wide receiver Malik Nabers was added to the injury report with a knee issue. He was limited.

Giants injury report: Darius Slayton misses practice with a concussion

New York Giants WR Darius Slayton, who is in concussion protocol, was one of four players not practicing on Wednesday.

The New York Giants returned to the practice field on Wednesday morning in preparation for a Week 2 game against the Washington Commanders at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

Both teams are coming off an opening-week loss and each need to immediately right the ship if they have any designs of reaching the playoffs.

After entering Week 1 with a healthy 53-man roster, the Giants now find themselves a bit banged up.

In addition to linebacker Carter Coughlin landing on injured reserve (IR), several other players also sat out or were limited during the week’s first practice.

Giants sign Ihmir Smith-Marsette, Jakob Johnson

The New York Giants have signed WR Imhir Smith-Marsette and FB Jakob Johnson, and made some changes to their practice squad.

With the news that kick returner Gunner Olszewski could be out for an extended period with a groin injury, the New York Giants signed veteran returner man and wide receiver Ihmir Smith-Marsette, who worked out for the team on Monday.

In addition, the Giants added linebacker Curtis Bolton to the practice squad.

Smith-Marsette, 25, is a Newark native who played his college ball at Iowa and was the Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year in 2018.

Smith-Marsette was a fifth-round pick (157 overall) of the Minnesota Vikings in the 2021 NFL draft and played with the Chicago Bears, Kansas City Chiefs (where he earned a Super Bowl ring) and the Carolina Panthers.

Last November, Smith-Marsette returned a punt 79 yards for a touchdown for the Panthers.

In 33 career games (one start), Smith-Marsette has caught 14 passes for 182 yards and two touchdowns, rushed nine times for 73 yards and one touchdown, returned 37 punts for 322 yards and one touchdown, and returned five kickoffs for 100 yards.

Meanwhile, the Giants have also re-signed Jakob Johnson to their 53-man roster. It marks the seventh transaction he’s been involved in since cutdown day.

Finally, the Giants announced that linebacker Carter Coughlin (pec) has been waived/injured. Once he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve (IR).

Giants’ Gunner Olszewski, Carter Coughlin out long-term

New York Giants WR Gunner Olszewski and LB Carter Coughlin are out long-term and WR Darius Slayton is in concussion protocol.

Not only was the New York Giants’ pride hurt during Sunday’s 28-6 loss to the Minnesota Vikings but their bodies got beat up as well.

Giants head coach Brian Daboll informed the media on Monday of the following injuries:

  • Cornerback Nick McCloud (knee) is currently “day to day,” but he could be more “week to week.”
  • Wide receiver Darius Slayton has been placed in the concussion protocol.
  • Kick returner Gunner Olszewski, who re-injured his groin in warmups on Sunday, will be out “for weeks.” Daboll said he was cleared to play on Sunday before re-injuring himself.
  • Linebacker/special teamer Carter Coughlin (pectoral) is out “months.”

Also, inside linebacker Micah McFadden (groin) and offensive tackle Evan Neal (ankle) did not play in Sunday’s game.

All five starting offensive linemen (Andrew Thomas, Greg Van Roten, John Michael Schmitz, Jon Runyan Jr., and Jermaine Eluemunor) played every snap as did quarterback Daniel Jones and rookie wide receiver Malik Nabors.

On defense, cornerback Deonte Banks, linebacker Bobby Okereke, and rookie safety Tyler Nubin were on the field for all 55 defensive snaps.

Giants will have entire roster available in Week 1 vs. Vikings

The New York Giants do not have a single designation on their final injury report and will have the entire roster available for Week 1.

The New York Giants open the 2024 regular season against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

Following a summer littered with injuries — several to key players — the Giants will enter Week 1 relatively healthy and with the entirety of their roster available.

“Nope,” head coach Brian Daboll said on Friday when asked if he’d rule anyone out.

Safety Dane Belton (back), linebacker Brian Burns (ankle), quarterback Drew Lock (abdomen), linebacker Micah McFadden (groin), and wide receiver Gunner Olszewski (groin) were limited in Friday’s practice.

Giants injury report: Drew Lock among 4 projected limited participants

New York Giants players were off on Thursday, so the injury report was projected and remained the same with Drew Lock and 3 others limited.

The New York Giants were off on Thursday after conducting a walkthrough on Monday, a fully padded practice on Tuesday, and a normal practice session on Wednesday.

They will return to the Quest Diagnostics Training Center on Friday for one final practice ahead of their Week 1 opener against the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday afternoon at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford.

It’s a quirk in the schedule due to the off week between the preseason and the regular season. Beginning next week, it’s likely that team meetings will be held on Monday with the players being given off on Tuesday.

Accordingly, the injury report for Thursday was projected due to players being away from the facility and resting.

The Giants’ full Thursday (projected) injury report, which did not change from a day prior, can be found below:

Giants’ Michael Ghobrial: Adoree’ Jackson is ‘dynamic with the ball in his hand’

New York Giants special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial says veteran cornerback Adoree’ Jackson is a “dynamic” return man.

New York Giants first-year special teams coordinator Michael Ghobrial has a lot on his plate with the 2024 NFL season just days away.

Like every other special teams coach around the league, he’s still toying with the new kickoff rules and alignment but Ghobrial has other issues he is focusing on.

First off, his top returner, Isaiah McKenzie, is out for the season with a foot injury and his No. 2 option, Gunner Olszewski, is recovering from a groin injury.

“He’s back there working at it, doing a great job catching the football,” Ghobrial said of Olszewski, who was limited at Wednesday’s practice.

In this Sunday’s season opener, Ghobrial may have to go with recently signed Adoree’ Jackson to return punts against the Minnesota Vikings.

“I’ll never close the door on getting the ball in the playmaker’s hands,” Ghobrial said while calling Jackson “dynamic.”

“He’s back there working at it, and obviously you guys know we only suit up 48 people on game day, so the more position flex, the more versatility a player can have, the better.”

Ghobrial cut right to the chase when defining what he wants to see first and foremost from his returners.

“The biggest thing to me with any returner value is the person has to make sure they can own the football,” he said. “That’s safely securing it because the most telling statistic in terms of winning and losing in this league is turnover margin. So, we want to make sure whoever is back there, that guy is owning the football and making smart decisions to catch it.”

Ghobrial was asked about second-year wide receiver Bryce Ford-Wheaton, who has emerged as a solid gunner on punts. The Giants kept ‘BFW’ on the 53-man roster over more experienced wideouts due to his play on “teams.”

“I love Bryce Ford-Wheaton, by the way. He’s wired the right way. I think it starts with the mentality. When the mentality is right, the rest of it comes into play,” Ghobrial said. “Obviously, as a receiver, he has a natural feel for being able to get people off the spot. He’s a really good catcher. He gives that possession position flexibility in terms of that.

“Anybody that’s a receiver that’s out there, you’ve got to obviously regard them in terms of coverage. I think the mentality, number one, is awesome because he approaches it like he is going to go win that rep every time. Then again, the experience of him being a receiver also translates in other parts.”

Finally, the issue of placekicker Graham Gano’s rehabilitation from a knee injury that cut his 2023 season in half, came up.

“I’ve seen Graham, the Graham Gano that wins football games in this league,” Ghobrial said. “I’m really excited to see him put pen to paper. He is a proven kicker in this league and I’m fully confident in his ability to go make kicks at any distance.”

The Giants had Northern Irish national Jude McAtamney in camp but released him after Gano proved to be healthy.

Giants injury report: Drew Lock among four limited in practice

New York Giants QB Drew Lock (hip) was among four players who were limited during Wednesday’s practice in East Rutherford.

The New York Giants took the field for their second full practice of the regular season on Wednesday in East Rutherford, New Jersey, and the first official injury report of 2024 was released.

Despite being littered with injuries throughout training camp and the preseason, every single member of the Giants’ 53-man roster and practice squad was on the field participating on at least a limited basis.

Head coach Brian Daboll did reveal one new name being added to the injury report: Safet Dane Belton, who is nursing a sore back.

Meanwhile, quarterback Drew Lock is still dealing with a hip injury suffered during a Week 1 preseason victory over the Detroit Lions.
