Zach Randolph officially announced his retirement on Twitter

We’ll always remember the Randolph-led “Grit and Grind” era in Memphis.

It’s rare that you come across a team that had an “era” without ever actually winning a title. That’s what the Grizzlies were in Memphis from 2011 to 2017

They beat up on the league’s best teams. They were a matchup no one wanted to see when the playoffs rolled around. Tony Allen, Zach Randolph, Mike Conley and Marc Gasol were the foundation of the NBA’s grit and grind Grizzlies.

You can’t talk about those Grizzlies without talking about Zach Randolph, the team’s All-Star power forward. That era just took another hit with him officially announcing his retirement from the NBA over the weekend.

I gave this game my all, and it gave everything back and more. Basketball will always be a part of me. From Marion, to East Lansing, to Portland, NY, LA, Memphis, Sacramento and everywhere in Between — thank you all for an incredible journey.

In total, Randolph played 17 seasons and averaged 16.6 points along with 9.1 rebounds per game while shooting 47% from the field. He made two All-Star appearances in his career — both with the Grizzlies. He played for five teams in total, but Memphis was his most notable stop.

With Randolph officially retiring, only Conley and Gasol are the last remnants left of that team’s core. Their run was spectacular while it lasted despite a less than stellar ending.

They never won a championship or reached the NBA Finals, but they were never supposed to. They mostly played the spoiler and just made the league more fun. Randolph was a big part of that and he’ll certainly be missed because of it.

Prediction

Wizards 124, Grizzlies 117

Moneyline (ML)

The WIZARDS (-115) are worth a look as slight favorites on the road, as the Grizzlies (-105) are playing the second end of a back-to-back set and they’re likely to have tired legs.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The WIZARDS (-1.5, -105) are a solid 7-5 on the road this season. They’re also a well rested side, and they’re 3-0-1 ATS in the past four when working on three or more days of rest.

The Grizzlies (+1.5, -115) are just 5-16 ATS in the past 21 when playing in the second end of a back-to-back, while going 2-5 ATS in the past seven overall at home.

Over/Under (O/U)

Take the OVER 234.5 (-115) with or without Thomas’ involvement for the Wizards. The Under is 5-2 in the past seven for Memphis, still, the Grizzlies are unlikely to play strong defense while working on no rest. Tired legs lead to lazy defense.

Prediction

Warriors 116, Grizzlies 111

Moneyline (ML)

The Grizzlies have lost nine of their last 10 games and are 3-6 on the road this season. The Warriors are 2-7 at home but did win their last game there, beating the Chicago Bulls 104-90 Nov. 27 before embarking on a 1-4 road trip. Back GOLDEN STATE (-143) as a slight home favorite.

New to sports betting? A $10 wager on Golden State to win outright would profit $6.99. Every $1.43 bet on a Warriors win profits $1 if they do so.

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The Warriors rank 23rd in the league with a 4-5 ATS home mark, but come in 0.9 points per game below the cover line. The Grizzlies are 3-6 ATS on the road, while performing 2.2 points below projection.

Slightly lean toward GOLDEN STATE (-2.5, -115) to win by 3 or more points. The number came down from 3.5 points earlier in the day. A winning wager would deliver an $8.70 profit on a $10 bet.

Over/Under (O/U)

The projected total is 217.5 (Over: -125, Under: +105). Both teams allow more than the league average in points per game: Golden State allows 114.0, while Memphis gives up 117.0. The Warriors rank 19th at 100.31 possessions per game and the Grizzlies are sixth at 103.58. Memphis can push the pace just enough that backing the OVER is a worthy play.

Prediction

Spurs 123, Grizzlies 105

Moneyline (ML)

PASS. The Spurs (-625) are too expensive on the moneyline, although they should handle their business in this one. They’ll be on a mission after getting thumped by 20 in their building by the Boston Celtics Saturday. San Antonio had been 4-1 SU at home until that implosion. Avoid the Grizzlies (+450), as they have won just twice in nine tries.

New to sports betting? Every $1 wagered that San Antonio wins profits $0.16 if the Spurs prevail. (Ex: Bet $10 to win $1.60, $20 to win $3.20, $62.50 to win $10).

Line/Against the Spread (ATS)

The SPURS (-11.5, –106) are just 2-7 ATS overall this season, but they’re going to get well against a Grizzlies (+11.5, -115) side which is really struggling to find their identity.

Memphis has not only managed a 2-7 SU record, but they have covered in just two games this season, too, while going 0-2 SU/ATS on the road. Look for San Antonio to win and cover, getting on track as they head into the new week with authority.

Over/under (O/U)

The OVER 22.6.5 (-106) has connected in eight of the past nine games at home for the Spurs. Interestingly, the over is 12-3-1 in the past 16 games after San Antonio allows 125 or more points in their previous game. Conversely, the over is 7-1 in the past eight when Memphis is thumped by 10 or more points at home, so it’s the perfect storm for a high-scoring battle in Texas.
