Broncos have lost 9 staff members in 2025 following Rob Paton’s departure

Rob Paton has left the Broncos’ scouting department to join the Jets. He is the ninth employee to leave Denver this offseason.

Yet another Denver Broncos employee has left the club.

Broncos scout Rob “Robbie” Paton is leaving the team to become a co-director of player personnel for the New York Jets, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. Paton will now reunite with Jets general manager Darren Mougey, who left Denver this offseason for a promotion in New York.

Paton played safety at UCLA before coaching defensive backs at Loyola High School and then returning to the Bruins as a scouting analyst. He was hired by the Broncos in 2017, four years before his uncle, George Paton, became the team’s general manager.

The younger Paton is the ninth staff member to leave Denver this offseason.

Broncos have to fill 5 positions on Sean Payton’s coaching staff

The Broncos need to fill five positions on Sean Payton’s coaching staff this offseason.

The Denver Broncos were hit hard by other clubs poaching coaching staff talent this offseason.

The Broncos lost assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo to the New York Jets, passing game coordinator John Morton to the Detroit Lions and tight ends coach Declan Doyle to the Chicago Bears.

The 2025 Broncos are the first team since the 2021 Los Angeles Rams to have three coaches poached for coordinator jobs, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis.

Additionally, Denver fired special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica and inside linebackers coach Greg Manusky. That gives the team five total positions on Sean Payton’s staff that need to be filled this offseason.

Broncos coaching staff openings

  1. Special teams coordinator
  2. Assistant special teams coach
  3. Tight ends coach
  4. Passing game coordinator
  5. Inside linebackers coach

Ex-senior personnel executive David Shaw also left for a coaching role with the Lions, but his old position is not necessarily one that needs to be filled.

Former New Orleans Saints interim coach/special teams coach Darren Rizzi is considered a top candidate to get the special teams coordinator job in Denver, and Phil Galiano could join him as an assistant.

Former New England Patriots tight ends coach Bob Bicknell could be a potential candidate to fill the TEs coach position in Denver, per Klis. Bicknell coached with Broncos senior offensive assistant Pete Carmichael with the New Orleans Saints from 2022-2023 when Carmichael was an offensive coordinator.

Broncos dismiss ILBs coach Greg Manusky (and more coaching staff updates)

The Broncos have parted ways with ILBs coach Greg Manusky. Denver now has multiple positions to fill on Sean Payton’s staff.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton has fired inside linebackers coach Greg Manusky, NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero first reported on Tuesday. The news has since been confirmed by KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis and others.

Manusky, 58, has spent time with six NFL teams, serving as Denver’s ILBs coach over the last two seasons. He is the second coach Payton has fired this offseason, joining ex-special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica.

The Broncos will now have to fill or reshuffle at least four spots on Payton’s staff this offseason. Denver has openings at ST coordinator, ILB coach, pass game coordinator and tight ends coach.

John Morton, the Broncos’ old passing game coordinator, left the team to become the new offensive coordinator of the Detroit Lions. Denver’s old tight ends coach, Declan Doyle, also left to become OC of the Chicago Bears.

The Broncos could also lose assistant special teams coach Chris Banjo, who has drawn interest from multiple times, including the New York Jets.

One of the open positions has a clear frontrunner. If he does not get the full-time head coach job with the New Orleans Saints, Darren Rizzi “is in line” to become Denver’s next ST coach.

We will track the team’s upcoming coaching staff moves on Broncos Wire.

Broncos’ new ILBs coach is a former defensive coordinator

Greg Manusky, the Broncos’ new inside linebackers coach, has served as a defensive coordinator with four teams in the NFL.

Sean Payton‘s coaching staff will include an assistant head coach helping run special teams, and a positional coach on defense with 20 years of experience coaching defenses in the NFL.

Payton announced several coaching hires earlier this month, including Greg Manusky as the team’s new inside linebackers coach. Manusky, 56, has an impressive resume for a position coach.

Manusky had a 12-year career as a linebacker in the NFL from 1988-1999, playing for Washington, Minnesota and Kansas City. He started his coaching career as a linebackers coach with Washington in 2001.

He later held the same role with San Diego before being hired as a defensive coordinator in San Francisco (2007-2010). Manusky later went on to serve as a DC for San Diego (2011), Indianapolis (2012-2015) and Washington (2017-2019) before joining Kentucky in 2020 as a defensive quality control assistant.

After two years at the college level, Manusky joined the Minnesota Vikings as an inside linebackers coach in 2022, and he now lands in Denver to fill the same role with the Broncos. With 22 years of coaching experience and 32 years of experience in the NFL, Manusky should have Denver’s inside linebackers ready to go this fall.

Former Washington player/defensive coordinator Greg Manusky has a new job

Greg Manusky spent a total of eight seasons in Washington, including three as defensive coordinator.

Greg Manusky was a popular player for the then-Washington Redskins from 1988-90. An undrafted linebacker from Colgate, Manusky appeared in 39 games, making 15 starts during his three seasons in Washington.

Manusky left Washington for Minnesota, where he spent three seasons before playing his final six seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Shortly after his playing career ended, Manusky returned to Washington to begin his coaching career. He was the linebackers coach for Washington in 2001 under his former Kansas City coach Marty Schottenheimer. After a five-year stint as linebackers coach with the Chargers, Manusky spent the next nine seasons as a defensive coordinator with three teams.

Then, he once again returned to Washington.

After spending one season as outside linebackers coach in 2016, Manusky spent the next three seasons as defensive coordinator and frequently drew the ire of fans for his struggling defensive teams.

It was a hard fall for Manusky, who went to the college game for two seasons as a defensive quality control assistant for the Kentucky Wildcats. He returned to the NFL in 2022 as an inside linebackers coach for the Vikings under former Washington colleague Kevin O’Connell.

Now, Manusky has another new job in the NFL. He is the inside linebackers coach for new Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton. Why Denver? New defensive coordinator Vance Joseph was the assistant defensive backs coach under Manuksy for four seasons in San Francisco, while Manusky was the defensive coordinator.

While Manusky’s defenses in Washington weren’t very good, he remains a respected coach around the NFL.

Broncos coaching staff update: Final pieces falling into place

The Broncos are expected to add Joe Lombardi, Keary Colbert, Michael Wilhoite and Greg Manusky to their coaching staff.

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton is getting closer to adding the final pieces to his staff.

In addition to hiring Vance Joseph as the team’s new defensive coordinator on Thursday, Payton also hired Joe Lombardi for the offensive staff, according to KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis. It’s not yet clear if Lombardi will serve as the offensive coordinator or in another role.

Lombardi worked under Payton in three different roles with the New Orleans Saints, including as a quarterbacks coach from 2016-2020. He served as offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Chargers from 2021-2022 before reuniting with Payton in Denver.

Payton also hired wide receivers coach Keary Colbert on Thursday, according to a report from On3.com’s Matt Zenitz. Colbert, a former Broncos receiver, coached at the University of Florida last fall. Before that, Colbert coached at USC from 2016-2021, helping develop a group of receivers including Michael Pittman Jr., Amon-Ra St. Brown and Drake London.

Denver is also bringing in Davis Webb as quarterbacks coach, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Webb spent time as a backup QB with three teams — most recently with the New York Giants last year — before joining the Broncos as a coach.

On special teams, Denver will hire Chris Banjo as an assistant special teams coach, according to Klis. Banjo, 32, is a former safety who was just officially cut by the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. Banjo played under Payton in New Orleans and under new Broncos defensive coordinator Vance Joseph in Arizona.

Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball, Denver is hiring Michael Wilhoite as its new linebackers coach, according to Klis. He coached under Payton with the Saints from 2019-2020.

Wilhoite will presumably oversee the outside linebackers because Greg Manusky is joining the team as their inside linebackers coach, according to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero. He has DC experience with four NFL teams and most recently coached ILBs with the Minnesota Vikings last season.

Joseph’s defensive staff will also include holdover defensive line coach Marcus Dixon and defensive backs coach Christian Parker, NFL Network’s James Palmer confirmed Thursday. Klis had previously reported that the Broncos hoped to keep Dixon and Parker on staff regardless of who was hired as DC.

Ben Steele, who served as Denver’s assistant offensive line coach last season, will not be staying. Steele has joined the Arizona Cardinals as their new tight ends coach. We are tracking all of the changes to the Broncos’ coaching staff on this page.

Vikings lose another assistant coach

The Vikings have now lost six assistants so far this year

The Minnesota Vikings had some coaches earlier this offseason requested for interviews with all of them coming on the offensive side of the football. None of them resulted in new positions for them, but they have lost multiple assistant coaches since then.

Per NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, the Cardinals took the Vikings sixth assistant coach in hiring assistant linebackers coach Sam Siefkes to be their linebackers coach.

The Vikings had already lost five coaches prior to Siefkes accepting the job with the Cardinals.

  • Assistant quarterbacks coach Jerrod Johnson-Houston Texans
  • Defensive coordinator Ed Donatell-Terminated
  • Inside linebackers coach Greg Manusky-Terminated
  • Defensive line assistant A’lique Terry-Oregon Ducks
  • Assistant special teams coordinator Ben Kotwica-Denver Broncos

Siefkes joined the Vikings in 2021 as a quality control coach before getting promoted to assistant linebackers coach with new head coach Kevin O’Connell.

Expect new defensive coordinator Brian Flores to continue building up his staff with his own guys.

Vikings put finishing touches on coaching staff with a slew of hirings

Vikings coaching staff is set with six new hirings

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O’Connell has put the finishing touches on his coaching staff with the team confirming six new hires.

Greg Manusky being brought in as the inside linebackers coach was reported last week, but it was made official on Tuesday.

Other names on the list include Tony Sorrentino (assistant wide receivers/quality control), Derron Montgomery (offensive quality control), A’Lique Terry (assistant defensive line), Steve Donatell (defensive quality control) and Ryan Cordell (pass game specialist/game management coordinator.

Steve Donatell is an interesting addition to the staff with his father, Ed Donatell, being named as the team’s new defensive coordinator. So there will be another father and son duo in the coaching room for the Vikings.

Manusky has served as a defensive coordinator for the Washington Commanders, Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Chargers. So he’ll bring in a lot of experience in helping the Vikings improve their struggling defense.

Here is the list of Vikings coaches in its entirety.

Report: Vikings hiring Greg Manusky as linebackers coach

Vikings bringing in a former defensive coordinator to coach their linebackers

After serving as the defensive quality control assistant for Kentucky over the last two seasons, Greg Manusky is expected to make the trek back to the NFL as the new inside linebackers coach for the Minnesota Vikings, according to Pro Football Network’s Aaron Wilson.

Manusky will serve on head coach Kevin O’Connell’s staff as an inside linebackers coach under newly-hired defensive coordinator Ed Donatell. With all of the talk surrounding hybrid defenses, his job will be key in helping Donatell teach and install a multiple-front look.

Before coaching at Kentucky, Manusky spent four years with the Washington Commanders as a defensive coordinator and outside linebackers coach. That stint followed previous jobs as a defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts and Los Angeles Chargers.

So he’ll come to the team with plenty of experience.

The connection with the Commanders obviously links back to O’Connell, who was still with the team at the time serving as the quarterbacks coach. Quarterback Kirk Cousins was also there at the same time as Manusky.

In many ways, this is quickly becoming a bit of a reunion for O’Connell with previous coaches he’s worked with and trusted in the past.

Hopefully, it leads to big things when the team steps back onto the field in 2022.

Former Washington safety D.J. Swearinger exposes old texts with Jay Gruden

Swearinger took the opportunity on Friday to air out old text messages with Jay Gruden, who challenged him on comments made to the media.

Were you looking for another juicy storyline to come out of Washington this week? Well, you’ve got one. Just days after the team announced that it will be retiring the controversial name and mascot, and just a day after a groundbreaking report came out accusing several staff members of sexual and verbal abuse, another story is hot off the press where one former player in Washington is calling out the former coach in Washington.

You get all of that?

It all started on Friday afternoon when former Washington safety D.J. Swearinger posted a picture of what are supposedly old text messages with Jay Gruden, who was fired midway through the 2019 season. Swearinger was released by Washington in 2018 after he publicly criticized the then-defensive coordinator Greg Manusky. Earlier that month, on December 8th, 2018, Swearinger had told reporters not to blame the players for the Redskins’ defensive struggles.

In a text message marked December 8th, Swearinger says Gruden texted him, starting the conversation with a profane message: “Wanna play? Let’s [expletive] play.”

In his caption to the post, Swearinger wrote that “As A Man You Have To Find Your Peace Through All The Negativity & Move Fwd!! I Was Gonna Give The Man A Pass but after what’s going on with that organization with women! They all need to be exposed.”

We’ll see if more current or former Washington players choose to use this opportunity to come out and expose some of their former coworkers or not. Stay tuned.
