Former Raiders OC Greg Knapp critically injured in bicycle accident in East Bay

The NFL world is holding its breath as longtime assistant Greg Knapp is in critical condition following a bicycle accident. The former Raiders offensive coordinator and current Jets passing game coordinator still makes his home in the East Bay town of Danville. He was out riding his bike in nearby San Ramon when he was struck by a motorist according to multiple reports.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Dougherty and Bollinger Canyon Road in San Ramon and Knapp was rushed to San Ramon Regional Medical Center and later transferred to John Muir Medical Center in Walnut Creek.

Knapp is a Sacramento State alum who has coached at the NFL level since 1995, working his way up to offensive coordinator, first with the 49ers and later had two stints as Raiders OC in 2007-08, and 2012.

Despite coaching in Seattle, Houston, Denver, Atlanta, and now New York, Knapp’s primary residence has remained in the East Bay where he lived while he was coaching with the Raiders. He was preparing to join his Jets team on July 27 for the start of training camp.

Knapp is said to be battling serious, life-threatening injuries and his family has asked that everyone keep Greg in your prayers.

The NFL community is sending their warmest regards to former Falcons offensive coordinator Greg Knapp. The current Jets assistant head coach was hospitalized over the weekend after being struck by a motorist while on his bicycle.

Knapp’s family released a statement on the incident Tuesday morning, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Since joining the NFL as a coach in 1997, Knapp has spent time with seven NFL teams, including a total of six seasons with the Falcons in two separate stints. While under Jim Mora Jr’s leadership from 2004-2006, Knapp served as the team’s offensive coordinator. Knapp returned to Atlanta in 2018 to serve as the team’s quarterbacks coach.

In January of 2021, Knapp was brought in by Jets head coach Robert Saleh to be New York’s passing game coordinator.

Knapp, New York’s passing game specialist, was hospitalized with serious injuries after he was hit by a car while riding his bike in California over the weekend. Knapp’s agent, Jeff Sperbeck, confirmed the story to 9News.

Knapp has been coaching in the NFL since 1997. With much of his work focused on developing quarterbacks, the 58-year-old has made stops with the 49ers, Falcons, Raiders, Seahawks, Texans and Broncos. With Peyton Manning playing beneath him, Knapp won a Super Bowl in 2015 as Denver’s quarterbacks coach. He held the same position with the Falcons over the past three seasons.

Knapp was hired to Robert Saleh’s staff in New York in January. He spent the spring working closely with rookie QB Zach Wilson.
