Report: Tennessee Titans to release Ryan Succop

The Titans have reportedly released Ryan Succop.

Hardly any team had quite the problem the Tennessee Titans had at placekicker last year.

And as the team has begun releasing players this offseason, veteran Ryan Succop is among the latest the Titans will reportedly part ways with.

The 33-year-old made just one of his six field goal tries after coming off Injured Reserve halfway through the 2019 season, and found himself sidelined again in December after he was placed on IR for a second time.

His 2020 salary was set to be $4.1 million, and the dead cap hit is $2.1 million, so this saves the Titans $2 million.

The move isn’t exactly unexpected, as the Titans signed former Cleveland Browns kicker Greg Joseph, who was used in the postseason, to a three-year deal.

There’s a chance the Titans bring in another kicker to compete with him in camp, though, as he only attempted one field goal in his short time in Tennessee.

With the moves to cut Succop, Cameron Wake and Dion Lewis, the Titans have now opened up roughly $11.5 million extra to use this offseason.

Should the Titans cut kicker Ryan Succop?

Releasing Succop is a reasonable choice to make at this point.

Tennessee Titans fans were looking forward to the return of starting placekicker Ryan Succop after he started the 2019 season on the PUP list, but the team’s problems at the position continued even after his return.

Succop was recovering from an offseason knee surgery, and was forced to miss the first eight games of the year after going 1-of-6 on field goal attempts.

He had more than his fair share of problems upon his return, and was placed on Injured Reserve in Week 16.

The Titans went through a number of players at the position during the games Succop was absent, between names like Cody Parkey, Cairo Santos and Ryan Santoso — none of which were able to consistently get the job done — before arriving at Greg Joseph.

Joseph has had a small chance to show what he’s capable of, and Succop has looked just as replaceable as anyone else the Titans have brought in recently.

He was good on a 30-yard field goal attempt in the 35-24 AFC Championship Game loss to the Kansas City Chiefs last month, and nailed all nine of his extra point attempts.

Releasing Succop is a reasonable choice to make at this point.

His 2020 salary would be $4.1 million, and with Tennessee totaling $2.1 million in dead cap money if they choose to release him.

This leaves the team with $2 million in cap savings.

The Titans have a lot of options as to what they can do at the position ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft, but if one thing is for certain, it’s that it absolutely must be addressed moving forward.

Titans kickers made just 44.4 percent of their attempts — the lowest mark in the NFL by a large margin in 2019.

Could the Titans target a kicker ahead of the 2020 NFL Draft?

In 2019, Titans kickers made just 44.4 percent of their attempts — the lowest mark in the NFL by a large margin.

The Tennessee Titans struggled at placekicker throughout the 2019 season, and could very well be in the market for another player at the position.

In 2019, Titans kickers made just 44.4 percent of their attempts — the lowest mark in the NFL by a large margin.

The problems started when Ryan Succop was placed on Injured Reserve to begin the season, with Cairo Santos and Cody Parkey both among those in the mix as his replacements as the season went on.

Santos was far from steady, ultimately losing his job with the team after missing four field goal attempts in one game.

Succop’s return against the Carolina Panthers was highly anticipated, but he fell flat and had to be replaced later on in the season after he went 1-of-6 on field goal attempts.

The Titans brought in Ryan Santoso as a kickoff specialist, but he was unable to perform up to standard.

Greg Joseph was the final player added at the position, but it took a long time before he was able to prove his worth.

Joseph attempted just one field goal with the team, which he made, but he’s far from cemented a place for himself with the Titans.

The Titans have a number of needs to address within an overall much-improved team, and a kicker may not seem like top priority, but the issue absolutely must be fixed for the Titans to be solid enough in all three phases of the game in order to make another Super Bowl push next season.

Expect the Titans to make some moves during free agency or with a late-round draft pick to fill the need.

NFL playoffs: 7 bold predictions for the AFC Championship

Seven bold predictions for the massive clash between the Tennessee Titans and Kansas City Chiefs with a Super Bowl berth at stake.

The AFC Championship Game will be played Sunday at Arrowhead in Kansas City. The high-flying Chiefs against the surprising Tennesee Titans. There are big names that rise up in big games and sometimes the least likely player becomes the hero.

Henry will break the century mark

Derrick Henry won’t be the reason Tennessee stumbles against Kansas City. In the AFC Championship Game, he will continue his run toward free agency with 20-plus carries and 125 yards. He will need to find the end zone a couple times for the Titans to have a prayer.

The Titans haven’t made a field goal since Week 13

It’s been a hot minute since the Tennessee Titans have drilled a field goal through the uprights — and even longer since the team has attempted one.

It’s been a hot minute since the Tennessee Titans have drilled a field goal through the uprights — and even longer since the team has attempted one.

The Titans haven’t attempted a field goal since Dec. 15’s 24-21 loss to the division rival Houston Texans, and haven’t made one since the team’s 31-17 home win over the Indianapolis Colts in Nissan Stadium in Week 13.

Tennessee is 8-of-18 on field goal attempts in the 2019 season, on pace for the worst season kicking since the 1983 Buffalo Bills made 42.3% of their kicks.

The Titans have found success in the red zone though, and are 11-for-11 in those situations over the past four games.

It’s been a tumultuous season for the team at placekicker, starting the year out with Cairo Santos and replacing him with Cody Parkey toward the middle of the season.

The Titans were expected to see improvement with Ryan Succop returning  against the Carolina Panthers, but it’s clear Succop wasn’t at full capacity as he tried to play through the season, and Greg Joseph assumed his place in the second-to-last game of 2019 against the New Orleans Saints.

Tennessee will look to stay dominant on offense as it prepares to face the Kansas City Chiefs at 2:05 p.m. CST on Sunday in Arrowhead Stadium.

NFL playoffs: Ranking the 8 kickers in the Divisional round

Justin Tucker leads the way among the 8 kickers left in the Divisional round of the NFL playoffs.

The playoffs heighten the stakes as each round moves forward. No shock there. However, it ramps up the pressure on the kicking game more. What coaches should be confident when they send out their kicker and what teams should turn away rather than watch?

8. Titans: Greg Joseph

David Butler II-USA TODAY Sports

There should be no surprise the Titans bring up the rear when it comes to the kicking game. They are on kicker No. 4 in Greg Joseph. Overall, the Titans have made all of eight field goals in 2019. Joseph had been on the practice squad of the Panthers like Harrison Butker, played in 14 games with the Cleveland Browns in 2018 hit 17-of-20 field goal attempts. He is 9-of-9 for Tennessee on PATs and has not kicked a field goal for the Titans.

Titans sign LB Nigel Harris to active roster, add WR Trevion Thompson

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Thompson originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers after the 2019 NFL Draft.

The Tennessee Titans made roster moves on Wednesday, signing linebacker Nigel Harris to the active roster and adding wide receiver Trevion Thompson to the team’s practice squad.

The 6-foot-2, 205-pound Thompson originally signed with the Los Angeles Chargers after the 2019 NFL Draft.

It was a short stint, though, as Thompson sustained an injury during offseason workouts and was waived-injured by the team.

He also saw time on the Tampa Bay Buccaneers practice squad earlier this season.

Harris is no stranger to the Titans, and was on the team’s practice squad last season before being added to the 53-man roster for the last two contests.

Also on Wednesday, the Titans signed kicker Greg Joseph and moved kicker Ryan Succop to Injured Reserve.

The Titans are set to face the New Orleans Saints at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Nissan Stadium.

Titans K Greg Joseph expected to kick vs. Saints, Ryan Succop placed on IR

The Titans and Saints are set to kick off at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Nissan Stadium.

The Tennessee Titans released kicker Ryan Santoso on Tuesday, signing Greg Joseph in his place shortly after.

Joseph was signed to a three-year deal with the Titans from the Carolina Panthers practice squad, and was 85% for the Cleveland Browns in 2018.

With the move, the Titans have also placed kicker Ryan Succop on Injured Reserve, per Ian Rapoport.

Succop hasn’t been the same player since making his return from injury earlier in the year, and has made just one of his six field goal attempts in 2019.

His low kick on Sunday’s 24-21 loss to the division rival Houston Texans ultimately proved costly, as the Titans could have potentially had a chance in overtime later in the game if the attempt had been good.

The Titans and Saints are set to kick off at 12 p.m. CST on Sunday in Nissan Stadium.

Panthers K Joey Slye struggled during windy warmups

Wind could be a significant factor for Slye today.

The Panthers should be able to take care of business against a pretty pathetic Redskins team at home today. One thing that could work against them is if kicker Joey Slye continues to struggle. Slye has been regressing ever since the London game against the Buccaneers. Last week, Slye missed two extra point attempts and a critical short field goal late in the game against the Saints.

A few days ago, the team added former Browns kicker Greg Joseph to the practice squad. However, they’re rolling with Slye once again. They may come to regret that, because it sounds like he may be in for another rough game. According to the Charlotte Observer, Slye’s warmups didn’t go great. He missed two wide right.

Wind could be a significant factor for Slye today. It’s currently blowing around 15mph at the stadium.

Slye seems to be as good as any kicker in the league when it comes to attempts of 50 yards or more – he’s connected on six of nine so far this season. He’s been less successful on shorter field goals, though. Slye is 73.1% on field goals and 84.6% kicking extra points for the year.

3 kickers who could replace Ka’imi Fairbairn right now

Amid a poor season by Houston Texans kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn, the Texans should consider trying out these three kickers.

The Houston Texans have not been getting it done as a kicking team. Third-year place kicker Ka’imi Fairbairn has shown regression in 2019 after leading the NFL in scoring in 2018. In turn, the Texans have watched easy points fall off the board.

On the year, Fairbairn is 13 for 18 on field goals (72.2%) and 24 for 29 on extra points (82.8%). On Sunday, he missed a 43-yarder in a blowout loss to the Baltimore Ravens. Those, in the NFL, are unacceptable numbers.

If the Texans see Fairbairn’s struggles as a reason to replace him, it won’t be easy. The kicker market, as it usually is in Nov., is barren. Nonetheless, here are three options Bill O’Brien and Co. should consider going into Week 12’s Thursday game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Greg Joseph

Ron Chenoy-USA TODAY Sports

A 69.5% field goal kicker at Florida Atlantic, Greg Joseph landed with the Miami Dolphins after going undrafted in 2018. Then, as the replacement to Zane Gonzalez in Cleveland, Joseph served as the Browns’ kicker for 14 games in 2018.

In Cleveland, Joseph drilled 85% of his 20 field goal attempts, missing two from the 40-49 range, and one from 50+. He drilled a game-winning 37-yarder in Week 5. His shortfalls ultimately came down to extra point kicking, as he went 25 for 29 (86.2%) as a rookie. He is now a member of the XFL’s Seattle Dragons.
