The NBA should copy Greece’s awesome outdoor basketball tournament idea

As we approach the start of the upcoming NBA season, we are starting to see more basketball played around the world and some of it rocks.

As we approach the start of the upcoming NBA season, we are starting to see more basketball played around the world and some of it rocks.

While it is not often that exhibition basketball games played in Greece capture such international intrigue, the Pavlos Giannakopoulos tournament was able to do exactly that.

With potentially over 42,000 fans reportedly in attendance at the Panathenaic Stadium (also known as Kallimarmaro Stadium) in Athens, they shattered a EuroLeague attendance record.

It was an iconic, unique atmosphere at the open air stadium that also played host to the first-ever Olympics of the modern era. The tournament featured a few prominent EuroLeague teams including Anadolu Efes, Maccabi FOX Tel Aviv, KK Partizan, and Panathinaikos. The vibes were otherworldly.

Even before the competition, it looked incredibly fun for fans.

But once the matches began, it was simply unparalleled. Look how cool this looked.

https://twitter.com/EuroLeague/status/1837572236158374043

Several of the teams had memorable former NBA players on its roster.

But imagine how exciting this would feel with the best players in the world competing in this type of environment.

We already have the NHL Winter Classic for hockey and the NBA should try something similar. They can even get a title sponsor and use this as a fun way to make more money for the sport in an exciting fashion like this.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort have heated words with Greece players in Canada’s win

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Lu Dort have heated words with Greece players in Canada’s win.

As the final buzzer sounded in Canada’s 86-79 win over Greece to start group play in the 2024 Olympics, additional fireworks were sparked in the aftermath.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander began jawing with Greece’s Giannoulis Larentzakis in an exchange that almost broke into a brawl as both squads circled the court.

Giannis Antetokounmpo served as the de-escalator by bumping the MVP runner-up to his teammates. Lu Dort then had his turn to exchange words with Larentzakis.

It was surprising to see Gilgeous-Alexander and Dort so heated. Both are usually calm players who don’t let the intensity of moments get to them amid contests.

The scuffle made the rounds on social media. Fans always love to see that side of players on the court. Thunder teammates Chet Holmgren and Jalen Williams even chimed in, showing excitement at the exchange.

After heads cooled off, Gilgeous-Alexander explained his uncharacteristic outburst. He said Larentzakis made intentional contact with his cousin Nickeil Alexander-Walker in the final moments.

“No. 5 bumped Nickeil after the whistle for no reason,” Gilgeous-Alexander said. “I just wanted to let him know we don’t play that. It was hashed out. It was cool.”

The reaction had blood pumping for most Thunder fans who watched the game. Many were juiced to see Gilgeous-Alexander stand up for his teammates in kerfuffles.

The 26-year-old is the face of Canada’s program, which means being the first to get involved in confrontations featuring teammates — especially if they include family as this scenario did.

Giannis Antetokounmpo emotionally celebrated with his kids after first Olympic berth

This is SUCH a beautiful moment for Giannis and his family.

After defeating Luka Dončić and Slovenia then winning a qualifying tournament, Greece has officially earned a spot in the Olympics.

Led by Giannis Antetokounmpo in these games, Greece moved past the Dominican Republic and Egypt during the group phase. In addition to a win over Slovenia, they also earned a victory against Croatia as well.

Antetokounmpo finished with 22.7 points, 4.7 rebounds, 2.3 assists, 1.0 steals, and 1.0 blocks per game in order to advance. He was clearly emotional following the win versus Croatia, visibly expressing all of his feelings on the sidelines as he absorbed it all.

Photographers captured a beautiful image of him celebrating with his sons Liam and Maverick Shai, who were wearing matching outfits. It’s moments like these that make Olympics competition particularly great.

Antetokounmpo later tweeted that he “never” cheats the game and that he will see everyone in Paris.

He later speculated about the possibility of becoming a flag bearer for Greece at the Olympics.

Olympic Power Rankings

Antetokounmpo isn’t the only superstar playing in the Olympics.

Many of the other elite players (including LeBron James, Joel Embiid, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Anthony Edwards, and plenty more) will represent Team USA.

But other formidable opponents include Canada, France, Serbia, and Germany.

Here are our initial power rankings now that the field is officially set.

Germany’s final prep match for Euro 2024 will be against a Greece side in flux after a coaching chang

Germany’s final prep match ahead of Euro 2024 will see Greece visit Borussia-Park for a Friday friendly.

Since taking over as Germany’s head coach in September 2023, Julian Nagelsmann has not quite convinced just yet. Wins over the U.S. men’s national team, France, and the Netherlands have helped his cause, but Die Mannschaft has also stumbled in losses to Turkey and Austria.

Coming off of a scoreless draw with Ukraine on Monday, Germany should have Niclas Füllkrug, Toni Kroos, Antonio Rüdiger, and Nico Schlotterbeck back in the fold. The quartet were all rested after participating in the UEFA Champions League final.

Germany, who will host Euro 2024, will face Scotland, Hungary, and Switzerland in Group A once the tournament begins on June 14.

Greece, meanwhile, remains under the stewardship of interim coach Nikos Papadopoulos after Gus Poyet’s contract expired in March.

Papadopoulos has assembled a squad featuring four players from the Olympiacos side that in May became the first Greek club to lift a European trophy. The Pireaus-based club won the UEFA Europa Conference League after a 1-0 victory over Fiorentina in the final.

Planning a golf trip to Europe? You might have additional forms to fill out

Plan to play golf in Europe in 2024 or after? You might need to do more digital homework first.

[anyclip pubname=”2122″ widgetname=”0016M00002U0B1kQAF_M8171″]

Planning a golf trip to Europe in 2024? You might need to fill out some new digital paperwork first, even if you’re a U.S. citizen used to traveling about the European Union visa-free.

The official travel site of the EU announced this week that starting in 2024, visitors from more than 60 countries that are visa-exempt will need to apply for entry to 30 countries through the European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS). The applicable visas will not be physical paperwork, instead being digitally linked to a visitor’s passport.

Notably, the announced program for 2024 does not apply to the Republic of Ireland, probably the most-visited of EU countries for U.S. players on golf trips. (For anyone who was busy beating balls on the range for several years and missed it, popular golf destinations England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland are no longer part of the EU and are not part of this new application process.)

U.S. nationals currently don’t need to fill out such an application, but that changes for any trips starting Jan. 1. The EU said ETIAS approval normally will take just a few minutes but can stretch out several days or longer, so it’s best to apply as early as possible to avoid any headaches or missed tee times.

Applications will be provided through an official website and app, and travelers will need to provide their passport information or another document to which visas can be affixed. The application process has not yet opened.

The processing fee is 7 euros, currently less than $8. Children under 18 years old and seniors over 70 can apply for free. Approval allows 90 days in the selected country over a 180-day period, and approval is good for three years or the expiration of the passport to which it is registered, whichever comes first. Parents and legal guardians can apply on behalf of children.

The program is similar to one the U.S. requires of many international visitors through the Electronic System for Travel Authorization.

ETIAS approval also will be required for citizens of Canada, Great Britain, Australia and dozens of other countries. For a complete list of countries whose citizens will need approval, click here for the official announcement, which includes several exemptions.

The counties that will require an ETIAS are listed below, as provided by the official travel site of the European Union:
