Celtics alum, G League coach Jason Terry’s Grand Rapids Gold sending many players up to Boston, NBA

The former Boston guard is coaching Denver’s G League team, and having surprising success getting his players to the NBA in his first season.

If you have been paying attention to a lot of the Boston Celtics‘ recent signings — and for that matter, the signings around the league of Celtics alumni, you may have noticed a common thread: a disproportional amount of them have been coming from the Denver Nuggets G League affiliate, the Grand Rapids Gold.

Whether we are speaking about new Boston two way forward Matt Ryan, recent wing signee Nik Stauskas, or former Celtics point guard Isaiah Thomas, the Nuggets’ G League affiliate has had a decidedly Boston-inflected spate of signings into the NBA of late, and it may not be a coincidence.

The Gold are currently coached by a Celtics alumnus, former Boston wing Jason Terry, who has started to turn heads among NBA analysts for his ability to catapult players from his level of play into the Association.

Stein: Celtics to sign Grand Rapids Gold G League forward Matt Ryan to two way deal

The Chattanooga product had been playing for the Denver Nuggets previously.

The Boston Celtics are now down to just one open regular roster slot with the reporting coming from Substack’s Marc Stein, who relates that the Celtics will sign undrafted small forward Matt Ryan (not to be confused with the NFL player of the same name) out of the G League to fill their final two way roster spot.

Ryan, who was playing with the Grand Rapids Gold (the Denver Nuggets’ developmental affiliate) under Celtics alumnus Jason Terry, has put up 18.5 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 2.2 assists per game while shooting 42.6% from the field, 38.5% from deep, and 96.4% from the charity stripe.

The New York state native played collegiately for Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, and Chattanooga at the NCAA level before leaving the last of the three schools for the NBA this past summer.

The move is in line with the emphasis on 3-and-D players team president Brad Stevens and could be the last player added for the season if Boston deems itself ready with the pair of 10-day contracts they inked last week.

More likely than not, at least one more new face will join the team before the March 1 deadline for playoff eligibility to help the Celtics’ depth in the postseason, however.
