Ian Gilligan beat cancer. Now he’s a successful college golfer at Long Beach State and winner of the CalHOPE Courage Award

“I’m just thankful to even be able to play.”

Ian Gilligan didn’t know whether he would live, let alone pick up a club and play golf again.

Now a sophomore at Long Beach State, Gilligan was in the fight for his life a few years ago. When he was 15, he was one of 20 kids worldwide diagnosed with a rare form of lymphoma, one that forced him to spend months in the hospital.

He would spend a week receiving chemotherapy treatments before having two weeks at home. That process continued for seven months, but Gilligan persevered.

Gilligan is the winner of the CalHOPE Courage Award for the month of November. The monthly award honors student-athletes at California colleges and universities who have overcome the stress, anxiety and mental trauma associated with personal hardships and adversity. It is presented by the College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA), in association with The Associated Press.

“It’s an honor to be nominated for the award,” Gilligan said. “I think everything that the award stands for and does is something I strive for.”

Golf remained an escape during Gilligan’s time receiving chemotherapy. Because his immune system was so compromised, he couldn’t do many things in crowded places, like go to the movies. But he could spend time on the golf course.

He first noticed pain his his shoulder when playing, and it eventually spread toward’s Gilligan’s armpit. He was having to take Advil on the course just to be able to practice. Then they got the diagnosis.

His first week home after treatment, Gilligan was normally so exhausted, he didn’t have the energy to play golf, instead just trying to recuperate at home. The second week, however, is when he would head to the course.

“Golfing was definitely a get away,” Gilligan said. “Those experiences helped me be more grateful and helped me grow as a person.”

Gilligan was being recruited before his diagnosis, and his dreams to play collegiately and beyond wouldn’t be hampered by being sick.

He originally received an email from Long Beach State asking him to come by campus for a visit, and after talking with his parents, he did just that.

The visit sold him. The campus was close to the practice facilities. Weather was nice year round. It was also close to his coach, George Gankas.

That decision paid off.

As a freshman last year, Gilligan was named Big West Freshman of the Year and to the All-Big West First Team with three top-10 finishes and five top-25 showings. His best finish was second place at the Big West Championships.

This fall, he has continued to dominate. Gilligan has two victories at the Nick Watney Invitational and the Mackenzie Invitational, as well as a strong finish at the Cal Poly Invitational. He’s ranked 21st in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings heading into the spring.

His drive and determination helped him overcome cancer and become one of the best college golfers in the country. That’s why he won the CalHOPE Courage Award, and it shouldn’t be a shock to see his success continue.

“I’m just thankful to even be able to play,” Gilligan said.

Stroke spreads for the men’s 2022 NCAA Championship using the Golfweek/Sagarin Power Ratings

Curious how your school may play this week? We’ve got some thoughts.

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Using the Golfweek/Sagarin Power Ratings, we took a look at the stroke spreads this week for the NCAA Division I Men’s Golf Championship being played at Grayhawk Golf Club.

To determine the stroke spread, it’s simply the difference in power rating multiplied by the number of counting scores (four) multiplied by the number of rounds to be played (four). The following numbers are based on the 72 holes of stroke play that will ultimately seed the match-play bracket.

The stroke spreads listed below are built off of the top-ranked team Oklahoma. Here’s an example of how to determine the difference against another team, not involving Oklahoma: Texas Tech would be -10 against Stanford or Utah would be plus 30 against Arizona State.

We have reached the eve of the 2022 PGA Championship and all eyes are on Tiger Woods, making his first start since he made the cut at the Masters in April.

The PGA field is 156 players, and this list reflects the late Wednesday WD of Bryson DeChambeau, who was replaced by Denny McCarthy.

The Heat Index breakdown below takes into account the latest Golfweek/Sagarin rankings as well as the most recent Official World Golf Ranking.

The column labeled “Heat” is a player’s ranking based on his play over the past four months. That can help those of you looking to make a few friendly wagers pick a player who is trending.

So far in the 2021-22 PGA Tour season, the average ranking of the winner heading into the week in which he won a PGA Tour event has been 50.7 in the Golfweek/Sagarins and 54.3 in the Official World Golf Ranking.

Spring-only rankings for 2022 in men’s college golf

One team stood out among the rest in the spring season.

College golf consists of a fall and spring season. The ranking below uses only tournaments from the spring season.

Vanderbilt, with only one head-to-head loss all spring, easily ranks No. 1 in the spring-only rankings. The Commodores lost to Georgia by four shots, finishing second at the Linger Longer Invitational in March.

Using the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, the chart below shows each team’s performance only in the spring season as the men’s regional play is set to begin Monday, May 16 and end Wednesday, May 18. The best three teams from the spring not in NCAA Regional play, you ask? That’d be California, Florida Atlantic and Cincinnati (SOS: Strength of schedule).

The 2022 Golfweek New England Junior Open returns to Ledgemont Country Club in Seekonk, Mass. July 13-14, 2022. Now in its 22st year the New England Junior Open draws one of the premier fields in junior amateur golf. Ledgemont Country Club is rated as one of the top-12 private courses in New England and is a favorite stop for elite junior amateurs from across the nation.

Jordan Spieth’s big week: Becoming a father, and returning to No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings

Spieth and his wife Annie welcome their first son and he regained his place at No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings.

Even when he dropped in the rankings, Jordan Spieth never lost faith that he’d eventually be back on top of the world.

This week officially marked that triumphant return.

Not only did Spieth and his wife Annie welcome their first son, Sammy, on Wednesday, but the former Texas Longhorn also regained his place at No. 1 in the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, knocking Jon Rahm out of the top spot.

Spieth started the calendar year well from the top, but won for the first time since the 2017 Open Championship in April at the Valero Texas Open, then finished T-3 at the Masters a month later. Spieth added runner-up finishes at the Charles Schwab Challenge and Open Championship for his best season on Tour since 2017.

He still sits at No. 11 in Official World Golf Ranking, but Spieth’s consistency over the last year—a key for the Sagarin formula—propelled him above Rahm.

How the Sagarin rankings are determined

Jeff Sagarin’s rating system is based on a mathematical formula that uses a player’s won-lost-tied record against other players when they play on the same course on the same day, and the stroke differential between those players, then links all players to one another based on common opponents.

The following list is an explanation of each category Sagarin uses to formulate his rankings.

  • Power rating: This is NOT a stroke average. The rating is calculated using a player’s record, stroke differential and connection to all the other players in the database. The difference between two ratings predicts the difference between two players in a typical round.
  • Schedule strength: The average strength of each event in which the player has played, calculated using the power ratings of every player in every field.
  • Schedule rank: The player’s schedule is ranked by difficulty among the entire database.
  • Records: A player’s won-lost-tied record, based on head-to-head competition, in each category. The winner in a 156-player field has a record of 155-0-0, the runner-up is 154-1-0 and so on.

First thing is we have to realize and know that this is a head-to-head ranking. This is calculated on who a player beats and who a player loses to. There is no weight or extra credit given for winning or better finishes. And unlike the OWGR, as a result of head-to-head wins and losses, a missed cut or a finish near the bottom of a field will hurt a lot more in GW/Sags than in OWGR.

The Golfweek/Sagarin rankings use a one-year window as opposed to two and consistency is paramount.

Spieth has made 19 cuts in a row and 19 of his last 20 in the last 52 weeks. Meanwhile, in Rahm’s last 22 starts he has 3 missed cuts and also withdrew from an event.

Spieth’s overall won-loss-tie record is 1859-389-71 (good for an .816 clip) while Jon Rahm is at 1973-426-74 (.812).

Another important thing to know is over time, the GW/Sagarin rankings generally have a player land in the No. 1 spot before the OWGR has that player ranked No. 1. There have been 13 No. 1s in OWGR since the GW/Sagarin rankings started in 2000 — nine of them went to No. 1 in Golfweek first.

Here is a look at the complete list:

OWGR all-time No. 1s since Golfweek/Sagarin debut in 2000

PGA Championship heat index: Who to pick at Kiawah Island?

Using the rankings, we’ve identified players who are trending heading into this week’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island.

Looking for a player to pick in your office pool? One strategy is to consider players who have had the most success in the months leading up to this week’s PGA Championship, the second major of 2021.

The entire PGA Championship field is broken down below according to the Golfweek/Sagarins and the Official World Golf Ranking. The left column, or the “heat index,” is a player’s ranking based on his play the past four months. That can help you pick a player who is trending.

So far in the 2020-21 Tour season, the average ranking of the winner heading into the week in which he won a PGA Tour event has been 89.35 in the Golfweek/Sagarins and 96.35 in the OWGR.

Spring-only rankings for 2021 in men’s college golf

Heading into NCAA postseason, here’s a new take on how teams stack up, using the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings.

College golf is a split-season, fall-and-spring sport. Still, teams can look drastically different when the calendar turns in the middle of the season – and that’s in a normal year.

The COVID-19 pandemic certainly complicated college golf this year. Fewer than 60 teams –with whole conferences, like the ACC, Big Ten and Pac-12 missing – competed in the fall season before nearly every team was back to competition in the spring. That means some teams already had a ranking, but against only a small number of teams, and some teams didn’t by the time the spring season started.

Using the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, the chart below shows each team’s performance only in the spring season.
