Tina Turner’s haunting ‘Goldeneye’ will stand the test of time as the best James Bond song

The legend delivered a spellbinding all-timer for the classic movie franchise.

On Wednesday, legendary singer Tina Turner died at the age of 83 after a long illness.

Any time an all-time icon like Turner passes away, many will pay tribute to the beloved performer, remembering their finest work. Turner’s imprint and impact on culture, let alone just music, is essentially impossible to encapsulate in short.

But for me, when I think of Turner, her glorious rendition of “Goldeneye” for the debut Pierce Brosnan entry in the James Bond movie franchise almost always comes to mind first. The Bond films are known for getting a bona fide music superstar to deliver an original, introductive melody that properly sets the scene for a new entry into 007 cinematic lore.

Turner’s “Goldeneye”, which is beyond haunting and still gives me actual goosebumps every time I blast it in my headphones, tells you absolutely everything you need to know about the mindset of Sean Bean’s Alec Trevelyan and his long-standing vendetta with Brosnan’s Bond in the events of the 1995 classic movie. From the moment Turner starts giving it her all, you understand Trevelyan has Bond in his crosshairs, it’s so personal, and you simply have to know why.

If there is one person I would ever pick to capture the essence of revenge and obsession with a spooky espionage overlay, it’d be Turner in every single instance without hesitation.

Just listen to Turner letting that “Goldeneyeeeeeeee” hang multiple times for a second. Let her set the stage with her trademark robust voice that seemingly always added extra heft and brings so much mystery and intrigue to this vintage Bond tale.

I gotta admit. When I first watched GoldenEye, it was hard to distinguish whether Turner was singing about the latest Bond villain’s threats with “and time, time is not on your side” or herself. I was perfectly fine with believing it was about Turner’s own revenge because I was so eager to learn who could have possibly wronged her. That’s a line no one should ever cross. She had me hook, line, and sinker.

How dare anyone cross Tina Turner like this. The absolute nerve.

To me, “Goldeneye” is the quintessential Bond melody. It’s one that could somehow be repurposed in most movies in the franchise. And I love that it’s how I’ll personally remember and treasure Turner’s memory.

N64 classic Goldeneye 007 is coming to Nintendo Switch and Xbox Game Pass

Bond’s beloved first-person shooter is finally heading to modern platforms with new bells and whistles.

At long last, Goldeneye 007 is coming to Nintendo Switch and Xbox Game Pass after all these years.

During the Nintendo Direct on Monday, developer Rare made the shocking announcement that Goldeneye 007 is getting a remaster — confirming reports from earlier this year. There’s no release date yet, but it’s apparently coming soon.

There are some slight differences between the ports of Goldeneye 007, it seems. The Nintendo Switch version will be available via Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscription and contains online multiplayer functionality. Meanwhile, the Xbox Game Pass version has better visuals, though it seems multiplayer is only local.

Check out the Goldeneye 007 remaster trailer below.

“The original experience has been updated with improved control options (including dual analogue stick support), native 16:9 resolution up to 4K Ultra HD (where supported), a consistent refresh rate and a full complement of achievements to unlock,” Craig Duncan, studio head of Rare, said via Xbox Wire.

The Game Pass version of Goldeneye 007 will be available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S. Anyone that owns the Rare Replay collection will get the port for free too.

Despite some confusion surrounding features in this release, it’s great that Goldeneye 007 is coming back. Rumors about this port have been swirling for months, and the game has never had a re-release since the Nintendo 64 days.

Goldeneye reportedly has trademark renewal, hinting at remaster

The N64’s biggest shooter might be coming back.

Rumors of Goldeneye 007’s return have been floating about since time immemorial. Or January, depending on who’s asking. Good thing there’s more evidence that suggests the classic N64 FPS will make a return.

A report by VGC states that Danjaq, LLC, a holding company that owns most of the licenses associated with the James Bond franchise, was given an extension on Goldeneye 007’s trademark on March 15, 2022—specifically licensing information that would allow for “downloadable electronic game software” possibilities.

Now, this could be for many reasons. Goldeneye 007 has yet to see a re-release since the original game is a legal mess that requires all rights holders, including Nintendo, Microsoft, and MGM, to untangle.

It’s hard to say what platforms Goldeneye 007 would appear on should a re-release happen. The Nintendo Switch recently saw Zelda: Majora’s Mask and Banjo-Kazooie on the Switch Online service, so Goldeneye 007 would fit right in. Rare was the studio that made Goldeneye 007, though, and Microsoft owns the company now. However, Nintendo and Microsoft have worked together on releasing games together on several occasions, like the aforementioned Banjo-Kazooie.

Time will tell if this trademarking business results in something we can play, but it’s looking good.
