Giants awarded Global Markets Program rights for Germany

The NFL awarded the Giants with Global Markets Program rights for Germany in 2024. They can activate within their program beginning April 1.

The New York Giants are pioneers in the NFL with it comes to international exposure. They were the first team to ever play outside the United States in 1950. In 1994 they took part in the famous American Bowl in Germany, a preseason game against the Chargers. Eli Manning became the first player to score a touchdown in the first ever International Series game in London in 2007.

On top of that, the Giants have long employed players of various backgrounds. Michael Strahan grew up on Germany. Graham Gano is from Scotland. Osi Umenyiora is Nigerian and grew up in the UK. There are plenty more, so it’s only fitting that the Giants were awarded Global Markets Program rights for Germany for 2024.

From the press release, “The Giants will kick-off their marketing rights in Germany in April during the 2024 NFL Draft. On April 27th, Day 3 of the NFL Draft, the team will announce their draft pick live from Germany with a collection of fans and alumni. The Giants also recently announced their International Fan of the Year, a German native who was surprised with a video message from Legend Eli Manning and a trip to attend the 2024 NFL Draft in Detroit.”

Clubs awarded rights through the Global Markets Program can activate in their market for a five-year term. Starting April 1, the Giants can make themselves known in Germany.

Lions get an expanded den footprint with the NFL’s Global Markets Program

The Lions were granted special access to four countries, including Canada and Germany as part of the NFL’s Global Markets Program

One of the ways the NFL is seeking growth around the world is through the Global Markets Program. The Detroit Lions are involved and now have four defined countries that are part of the expanded den footprint for the team.

On Monday, the Lions announced they have been awarded the marketing and partnership rights for Canada, Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The team gets greater access to local media and fans to help promote the Lions and the NFL overall.

From the press release via the Lions media staff,

First launched in 2022, the Global Markets Program awards NFL clubs international marketing rights to build brand awareness and fandom beyond the U.S., through fan engagement, events and commercial opportunities. NFL clubs can apply for rights to international markets by submitting proposals to the International Committee for review each year. Clubs are awarded rights for at least a five-year term through the program, and during this period can pursue activities in that international market that are consistent with what they can do in their home market.

The partnerships last five years and are not exclusive to just the Lions. Detroit is one of 10 teams with partnership rights to Germany. All four of the countries feature at least three NFL teams.

One of the clearer benefits for fans in the three European countries is that the Lions are overdue to play in an international game. With the Lions having territorial footprints in Germany and adjacent countries, it would seem to make a Lions date in Munich or Berlin more likely than a trip to London or Barcelona in the near future.

Jets keep United Kingdom in NFL’s expanded Global Markets Program

Jets keep United Kingdom in NFL’s expanded Global Markets Program

The NFL announced the expansion of its Global Markets Program, formally known as the International Home Marketing Areas program, to include 21 teams across 14 international markets.

Among those teams and markets, the Jets are among seven teams that will be a part of the United Kingdom market. They are joined by the Chicago Bears, Jacksonville Jaguars, Miami Dolphins, Minnesota Vikings, Pittsburgh Steelers and San Francisco 49ers.

The program allows teams to market themselves and build fan growth in various international markets and build their brands globally. The initiative started in 2022 and teams are able to keep their markets for a five-year period, so this is the second year for the Jets as part of the UK market.

The NFL is continuing to grow the international presence of the league all over the globe. It has even created an official strategy to expand the league’s presence in foreign markets called the Global Markets Program.

The league revealed the national partnerships with teams and foreign markets in a tweet on Tuesday morning. The goal is, “now have access to grow their fan bases around the world in long-term strategic effort to enable clubs to build their brands globally.”

Alas, the Detroit Lions are not one of the 21 teams allocated to a foreign country for emphasis. The natural partnership with Canada, a country that can be seen from the parking garage next to Ford Field, is being eschewed. The Lions also have a sizeable contingency of players from Nigeria, but that is also not in the works for Detroit.

From the NFL’s press release on the Global Markets Program,

The ‘Global Markets Program’, which launched in January 2022, grants NFL clubs access to international markets for marketing, fan engagement and commercialization activations as part of an important, long-term strategic effort to enable clubs to build their brands globally while driving NFL fan growth beyond the US.
NFL clubs can apply for rights to selected international markets by submitting proposals for the International Committee to review each spring. Clubs are awarded rights for at least a five-year term through the program. During this period, a club has the rights to pursue activities in that international market that are consistent with what they can do in their home market.
